cheesycheesycheesy piece of advice: same way you choose to deal with any bank, always insist on available tenures and rates and make your own choice... don't leave it up to em... don't be emotional but rational with your dealings with institutions as opposed to individuals.

don.shady:

Don't close the account because you might move bank. I walked into firstbank this morning to move funds to Zenith the manager showed up and asked why I was moving and I told him their bank isn't selling tbills. immediately he ordered them to do so and alas they they gave me 14% for 352 days. I think they know what they are doing.

How secure is this treasury bills? Rate it by percentage. Can someone invest in it for a year and have peace of mind?

That's the safest investment you can get in Nigeria.

Interest raised by federal reserve 0.5 and futher 2 raises expected next year .....tb rate might jump to 18 oooh next year meaning more money leaving Nigeria to the us and less money to invest in nigeria money markets

How can a tier 1 bank tell Nigerians that for the past 2weeks network for TB isn't working but they have network for every other transaction.

Maybe to prevent their customers from moving their deposits into TBs.

Sincerely, I don't know but today was the worst I've seen first bank. I came for ATM renewal, transfer and ntb. There was no network for these from 10 to 3 I left. I just got the transfer alert few minutes ago, while the rest is pending. I believe all banks have their off weeks or month. I've experienced same with GTB. I call for calm and patience as it's mostly peculiar to the seasons rush. Although most NTB investors lacks patience as time is money.
First bank Agbara branch.

And from historic data we have the following:
Average TB rate over the past 10 years is 11% (2008 @ 6%, 2010 @4%, 2012 @ 16%, etc.), Bond average @ 5% (Nigeria 5yr eurobond can fetch up to 7% while Brazilian eurobond 10% because they are considered high risk), Dollar rate 2008 was N120 (2010 @ 155, ......2018 @ 360).

a) NTB: On N1000 investment made in 2008 at average of 11%, it will be worth N2800 today
b) BOND: On N1000 investment made in 2008 i.e. 1000/120 = $8.33 invested in bonds at 5% it will be worth $13.57 today i.e. N4900
c) DOLLAR "from under the pillow" will be worth 8.33 x 360 = 3000 today

So it appears there is little difference between NTB and dollar cash investment. The $ bond appears to be worth investing in but this assumes a future naira devaluation rate similar to the existing historical data. The reality may be better or worse. Only time can tell. In conclusion there could be a short term loss if one chooses the pure dollar path (path c) due to bank charges and black market rates. And one can only get good eurobond rates by investing in developing countries, which means only the devaluation risk is mitigated, the market/country risk remains essentially the same.

NOTE:
1. Eurobonds can be purchaed through the likes of FBN Capital. To get a rate of up to 7%, one has to invest in the minimum of 5-year bond. There is a one-time management fee of 1.5% - which means any investment that is less than 2 years is not worth it. There will also be costs for converting naira to dollar since the transaction will not be eligible for conversion at the official market, so parallel market rate will be used.
2. NTB investment may be worthwhile in the short term if the naira doesn't lose more than 7% of its value per year.

Any opinion on this?

Primary Market might open by 9th or 16th Jan.

But SECONDARY MARKET IS OPEN
you can go to the bank now and buy treasury bills on the secondary market.

the difference might not be worth the wait.

Primary market is buying TB from the source (CBN) through your bank/investment house. secondary market is when you buy Tb that had already been bought in primary/secondary market from a holder of a tb and its done through your bank/investment house.

First bank is such a crazy bank, very stingy in everything. Thanks that I'm conversant with this site, was there days ago, the lady incharge said, no tb until nxt year, i was like wht, Xmas plans ruined. So someone here said, som bank r still running tb, so i went back to meet the said lady, i just said give me transfer form as u guys won't accept tb, when she realized the funds involved, she even had to beg me to run d tb for me. Gave me 11% for 64 days, as i wouldn't want any tb running beyond fed 14, cos of election, hoping to long it after election, happy to come across this thread, it has indeed change my life ,reasoning and of course my pocket. Kudos to u guys, First time to comment
