Is It Necessary To Keep A Local Dog First Before Getting A Highbreed Dog? by Nobody: 10:59am On Dec 21, 2018
After a recent robbery incident in my compound where everyone was asleep and the robbers had already broken into the house before anyone was aware of their presence, i feel i should get a dog.
if i had one, the barking of the dog would have alerted everyone to the presence of intruders and we wouldnt have been taken by surprise..

but before spending on a highbreed dog, i wonder if it is necessary to get the local breed (considering i have absolutely no experience with dogs) to let the family get used to living with a dog and how to take care of it. instead of getting an expensive dog and losing it to poor treatment etc

i dont know...please what do you guys advice....

Starting with a local dog is a good ideal.... ... It's very easy to take care of local dog that those high breed dog. I can assure you that you won't have to go for high breed dog once you knows the dos and don't of your local dog.
(1)Make sure your local dog is always kept in a cage.
(2) feed the dog once or twice daily. If it's once, make sure it's in the afternoon and you prefer twice .Make sure it's morning and night.
(3) always loose the dog in the night so as to secure the compound.
(4) always notice whenever your dog doesn't have an appetite to eat. Definitely there is something wrong. Take good of that.
I can assure you if you can do all this. Keeping high breed dog won't be stressedful to you. Good day

What's an highbreed dog?

No its not necessary, but it's necessary to make a lot of research about dogs in general, and also research about the specific breed of dog before getting it. Its extremely important.

dont get a puppy less than 3 or 4 months , that’s when you’ll know what you are getting is full breed or not ... you can’t tell what a puppy will look like when it grows up

It is not necessary to keep a local dog first.
i would advice you get A German shepherd, based on the reason you want one for guard and security purpose.
a local dog would not do a good job at alerting you if there is a robbery as they are naturally loud dogs and you probably wouldn't be able to diffrentiate their bark when they trying to alert you or when they are just being a bingo but a German shepherd would do a better job at alerting you, protecting you also the fear of taking special care of gsd is not needed as long as you can spare enough time and proper food you are good to go

It depends, if you don't mind spending money to Care for the dog you can go for any of the foreign breeds

But if you don't want to spend money, you can go for our local ekuke dogs, they are very economical, because their immune system is very strong so they don't get sick easily especially if you keep them very closely and don't allow them to wonder around the neighborhood. They are not picky eaters also, which means it would be easy to fatten them up.

I wanted to go for one a few years ago but my vet talked me out of it, then I later found out the only reason he did that was to get me to buy a foreign breed from him now im kind of regretting because I would have saved up alot of money if I went for our local ekuke dogs.

in Nigeria , I trust no breeder , and almost everyone claims to be reputable and have a pedigree breed.. the end result says otherwise

Thanks all for your input.

Today I went to mile3 to get the local breed, atleast for the barking. All the dogs I saw looked sick and weak.

I guess I'll look for someone who has at home and not buy from market

The insecurity issue has gotten out of hand. I've even sent my wife and daughter to my in-laws for the festive period.

I just need something to be alerting me of intruders for now.

Then i'l get a gsd or Caucasian eventually.

I'm in Port Harcourt so you can point me to any reputable breeders here would be appreciated.

Thanks all.

It's so bad I had to visit parrot sellers in gra today.
I just need something that makes noise. It's just my house in the compound. And it's a quiet neighbourgood.

I'm realising that in this country everyone needs cctv and 24hr light to power it and dogs in their homes

If you prefer to get a puppy make sure it's atleast up to 4 months of age because that is the age that they usually start to bark.

The same way you draw experience from a local breed(hybrid) that's same way you'll get experience from a purebred dog.
.
it all boils down to your personality. Are you someone that learns from your mistakes only or one that learns from others and their experiences. we have the internet to help you out with almost everything/information you'll be needing.- You're not the first to be in such position; a lot of people have gone through this stage and they have written down their experiences for newbies to learn from.
