TheCongo2: Well said! you summarised it aptly, it is racism. And it is so far reaching to the point that even some of those who seem so passionate about our culture and pass of as Afrocentric, are unknowingly guilty of it. You'd see our men stand their ground on gender roles and ready to pull the heavens down for it because according to them it is our culture, but when they date or marry a Caucasian they suddenly no longer mind who does what in the house. When it comes to african women, we have a long list of checkbox and highest standards of physical appearance they must meet but once na oyibo, the skin alone checks all the box. What is interesting is that in the same breath, we would nag about how Europe underdeveloped Africa and how slavery was an irreparable sin... See, na we be our own slave master cos e clear say by default we no dey consistent in our judgement. 46 Likes |

einsteino: Always the double standard... The judgement is always applied according to the race of a person. If you are white you shall live else ... White people never integrate anywhere in the world. They would go different places to make changes. Whereas minorities are even forced to accept and view things like homosexuality, same-sex marriage or transgender as common way of life. Those are things our ancestors knew nothing about. By the way, as a Canadian citizen I respect gays people even though I dont agree with homosexuality. The Canadian culture is all about dealing with mutual respect even when we don't agree on something. 24 Likes |

TheCongo2: Thats the problem. We all want that utopia but nobody is willing to bell the cat. I'm also guilty of the same crime. But if we dont speak out, how will most people ignorantly wallowing in the cesspool of inferiority complex ever know that they deserve better? There are times i read comments and choose not to say anything or give my opinion just because i dont want one fellow picking on me. But if we all keep quiet to keep peace, is that not hypocrisy? That said, I think people should think through this Canadian journey well. Most married people are in it for selfish reasons and its just a matter of time before the cookie crumbles. Some of the men are only using their spouse to get acceptable CRS points, ITA, and in some cases, funding for the journey. While some of the ladies in addition to using the men for the same purposes, are in it to escape their marriages or relationships. Nigeria has good culture and morals. If only we had same quality of leadership, nobody will apply for this PR. It is well 13 Likes 1 Share |

Guitarlife: i think arguments are good, if it those not involve attacking personalities. We must discourse real issues. The thread says life as an immigrants in Canada, like i have shared my own observation here on this forum. I have shared my observation and opinion, whilst i shared it i did not attack anybody. So its good we share our views and do not attack anyone. my one cent 7 Likes |

toboy: Thank you so much joo2018. This question is beyond the scope of this thread. It is all about mutual respect in Canada. So long as I don't harrass homosexual or discriminate against them, no one should ask me why I don't agree with homosexuality. To agree or not to agree with homosexuality is a personal choice. What matters is mutual respect and acceptance. 62 Likes |

TheCongo2: He! He! I definitely respect your personal choice. I was only asking to learn. I didn't know it was an opinion personal to you. For me, what I have learned lately giving our limited rationality to understand some of the complex things happening in our world is to state that 'I do not have enough information or knowledge to make an informed decision or opinion about topics like this'. For instance, you mentioned 'those things our ancestors knew nothing about'. Societal norms are not static, they are dynamic. Our ancestor knew nothing about some other things. They killed twins, performed human sacrifice (still today), Female Gender mutilation etc. Some of the technologies and religious affiliation that we have normalised today, our ancestors knew nothing about them. Not that I don't value our ancestral heritage, but It will be faulty to pick one issue and say that our forefathers knew nothing about it. That is my own personal opinion oo 11 Likes |

As per the scope of sex/gender (LGBTQ stuffs) and whatever people believe in, It's all about personal choice, aslong as homophobia is taken out of the equation. I have had two gay managers, and they were not different at work from the straight managers I have had. There are kids in my son's class (grade 1) who think that they are girls when they are actually boys - bobrisky levels, and this is at a catholic school. All the kids in his class between age 5 & 6 have all learnt to mind their own business and respect the wishes of others. Just as theCongo mentioned, It's all about mutual respect. Live and let live. 15 Likes |

I am sorry to say it is not only Nigerians that feel inferior with whites. My former landlady (a Jamaican)who has been in this country for more than 35 years gets jittery when she sees whites. I am like, so she has different treatment for people based on their colour. In my workplace too, one of my ogas from Barbados does the same. A colleague from Jamaica was now telling me that it is because she is from Barbados. That jamaicans don't do that. I just smiled at her as i didn't want to waste my time sharing my experience with my jamaican landlady. My conclusion is that some blacks feel inferior because of their colour. They make up for being black by giving preferential treatments to the whites. I wish i can share my experience in my workplace here now but time is not ripe for it yet. It is not peculiar to Nigerians and once i notice you treat people differently based on their colour, you will not see me near you. 18 Likes |
