I've been going through Marx's statements on Wikipedia, and it seems to relate with the Nigeria situation.

In his time, Marx understood the effect religion has on the masses in making them illusioned with expectations. This illusion helps them forget their immediate suffering and enslaves them to doctrines which are purely irrational.

Read this:

Reflecting on the above statements, its beginning to get clear why Nigeria is the way it is- highly religious, yet highly undeveloped
