Because its not uncommon for people in the same job description in the same company to be earning different pay. Like the popular saying goes 'what you don't know, can't hurt you'

Imagine if you have been with a company for over a year, and during the course of mentoring new intakes in the same position, you discover they are earning $20/hr and you are being paid $17/hr. As a human being, even though deep down you know they may have better qualifications, you will still feel bad cos you have the on the job experience, which is why you are mentoring them to begin with.

I know a company that uses a form of calculation to determine your pay structure based on where you schooled and your previous work experiences. so every hire for the same position end up earning different salary based on the result of the calculation.

Well said. I made this exact mistake. Disclosed my salary and a week later I was sacked. At the time I was oblivious to this issue and how disclosing ones salary can affect you in a negative way. Man I don suffa for this Canada.

Yeah it has happened to me so many times to read comments on here that make me start laughing to myself all day long. This may be embarrassing when people are around. Sometimes, I would pretend to be coughing if I can't hold it. I believe @nogen may be going through something similar grin

Now back to the topic. We had this discussion here before:

My Jamaican barber told me he was sponsored by the barbershop to get his PR.

Salford1 once indicated that he knows someone who got his PR through working in a fast food restaurant (Dairy Queen)

Given the above, wouldn't it be possible for a church to sponsor someone for playing or to play drum?

Welcome @aworldcitizen and @amdman . @tojued, it’s not only you that wants to follow “thread” oh. Share now.
@TheCongo2, I don’t know about Canada but I know the US has a R visa or something similar that is for sponsoring religious leaders like foreign pastors on like a work permit status for churches. I don’t know if talking drummers fall into this category though. Is drumming a skilled trade here? (Insert thinking emoticon)
@salford1 that your last post was quite enlightening
@princesschuks you got me in stitches.

BANKING
Opened a chequing and savings account with ScotiaBank. Service was quite good and was impressed. Many lessons for the Nigerian Banks. Offered a $3k credit card. Opened another account with CIBC and was offered a $1.5k credit card. The newcomers package for both banks are good, but for ScotiaBank, you start paying charges on your account from day one, while CIBC will give you a year of free transactions. [b]

Welcome Amdman!

Sometimes I wonder if Scotia has fixed banking plans or whichever banker one meets just wings it.

I first opened an account with Scotia. The guy who opened the account said the first 6 months will be free and contrary to all I had heard and read here initially refused to give a credit card because I was a new immigrant. After some back and forth he approved 1000CAD
I later had to close the account. (Oh and I was surprised how closing an account was drama free unlike Nigerian banks and they gave me to my last cent)
Anyway, after another round of back and forth ,I reopened the account and was given 2000CAD credit and 1 year free of charges.

I have a choir member in my naija church that got his UK visa via that means too.

But you and i know that you have to convince this people here that you have advertised for a position for 1 month and couldn't get anybody to fill the space before you can bring in someone to fill the space.

Moreover is it not here we learnt Nigerians are not qualified for work permit? Anyone that raises work permit issue here is always told that he is about to be defrauded or has it changed now? The much i know is that Nigerians are only qualified for work permit after graduating from school here.

Abeg i no get strength argue. There is no harm in trying. It may work for you.

On a serious note, why not look for a skilled trade to use to migrate if skilled worker's stream did not work for you.

I am having headache from the good laugh i had that i will not be able to post anymore on this issue.

I apologise on all our behalf. Please don't be offended because it is quite an unusual request.

I believe for this to happen you have to be in CA already and have shown your skill on the drums before the church can even get round to sponsorship talks.

Apprenticeship:
Getting an apprenticeship position in Calgary has never really been easy since I moved to Canada, so it is expected to be tougher now that there is a glut in crude oil. It is an old boys club; hence, they offer most of the positions to relatives and friends. Some have been able to overcome this challenge by taking a pre-apprenticeship program at SAIT, but this still only gives a 50-50 chance and cost $$$. This is not to say it's impossible to easily get an apprenticeship position in Calgary, its just more difficult.

Some employer would prefer that a candidate work for them as a labourer for 3 months or more, hands on skills will be evaluated during this period. Other employers would expect a candidate to have a diploma from SAIT before they enrol a candidate on a structured apprenticeship program. This is common with utilities (gas and power).

However, up North, it's a different ball game. In the Grand Prairie area, employers are still willing to hand a candidate an apprenticeship from day 1. Not sure about the Ft Mc and Edmonton area nowadays, but it will still be better off than the calgary area since the North is more blue collar while the South is more white collar.

Security:
I worked as a security guard not long after I landed in Canada. Law enforcement career path (with the goverment) is huge and well remunerated in Alberta. I would restrict this discussion to Alberta since that is where I am familier with.

Commisioned and non commissioned City Police Officers (CPS, LPS, EPS etc): Highest paying. Excluding non-monetary benefits, starting salary is usually over $80k/yr for non-commisioned. It is even higher for commisioned officers.

The RCMP: A prestigious federal agency. RCMP stations are everywhere in Canada often outside city limits and have contracts with towns/cities that do not have their own city police force.

Alberta Sheriffs: They guard court houses, provincial buildings, transport prisoners, and are very active on Alberta highways handing out tickets to traffic offenders.

First Nation Police Officers: Stationed at first nation reserves. They work just like the regular city police.

Peace Officers: They have three sections that I am aware of - Transport, Correctional (prison) services and Healthcare services (AHS). When you don't pay a train ticket, or are caught jaywalking, they would hand out fines and tickets. The ones stationed at hospitals in conjuction with private security guards helps to ensure peace and safety, especially in the Mental Health Unit. The police hand over arrested drunk people off the streets or kids causing troubles at remand homes to peace officers/security guards and hospital staffs till they are okay to be let back into the community.

Security Guards: Private companies security guard officers. Security guards are found everywhere hospitals, airports, construction sites, oil fields, office buildings, utility sites, loss prevention at stores etc Usually lowest paying but those working in oil fields/refineries, and aiports could earn above $20/hr.

There are few others that I do not know much about: Canada Border Officers (Federal agency), Transport Officers (enforce commercial vehicle standards and regulations), City Bylaw officers, and Fish and Wildlife officers.

With the exception of the private security guards, most if not all enforcenent will require a degree or diploma in a related field.

When I worked as security guard for AHS in Calgary. CPS would usually recruit most of their officers from the peace officer cadre. In previous years, they also hire police officers from the United Kingdom. The Alberta peace officers would also usually recuit people with prior experience as security guards. So alot of the security guards I worked with in AHS had desires to become a City police officer, Peace officers, RCMP officers etc so with respect to your question, you can kickstart your career in law enforcement by first working as a securtity guard and work your way up. Jobs for security guards are easy to comeby. Only few Immigrants are willing to build a career in law enforcement;hence, there is high staff turn-over at the security guard level. You can also be lucky to get a job straight away in law enforcmment without even going through the traditional route of starting from the bottom up.

You can google specific law enforcement occupation plud Alis Alberta Occupations to find out more about these careers in law enforcement.
E.g google "sherrifs alis occ info" and you would get results.

Oga Salford, are you a Nigerian? which part do you come from? Your knowledge of Canada is something else, I bet you don't know half of this about 9ja grin even the time you spend helping pips here makes me to wonder in amazement. Thanks for your reply. I actually want to upgrade my ticket from a one way ticket to a roundtrip ticket. Currently the roundtrip cost 165k on their app while I paid 255k for a one way ticket. I'm wondering if i'll be refunded the balance of cash paid when I upgrade to roundtrip. However I'll try sending a mail as you have advised. Cheers.
IamtrulyBlessed pqost=74395508:
Cancellation of economy flight ticket should cost about $300, while rescheduling is $200.
You would have to send email requesting for cancellation and payment of refund into your bank account. You should receive your balance within 5 business days.
