1. A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Helicopter was lost in combat while providing close air support to troops of 145 Battalion at Damasak in Northern Borno State. The mission was part of the ongoing counterinsurgency operations in the North East. The incident, occurred about 7:45 pm today, 2 January 2019. Details of the cause of the crash are still scanty. As soon as the details of the crash are known, they will be made available to the public.

This is a very sad way to start the year, i seriously hope the pilots are rescued if they survived the crash.

The role of the Nigerian Air Force In this war cannot be overlooked! these angels in the sky providing CAS for troops on the ground are the only element of this war Boko boys fear, I have resisted temptation in the past but I have to admit it, NAF is the only reason Boko boys no longer contest territory with NA, Boko boys even time response from NAF, that is why all their attack look like hit and run! What do you think they are running from ? It’s the overwhelming fire power from above! Even when they capture a town they don’t stay for more than 12hrs because of heavy casualties inflicted by NAF and eventually NA sends reinforcements.

What happens if these terrorist eventually get their hands on MANPADS ? From Libya, chad, Sudan or Yemen ? What then ?!

Anyways I’m just ranting what do I know.

If he had said his idea of National Guard entails temporarily creating an elite force comprising men from the military, police, DSS and local vigilante groups; training them properly, equipping them dangerously and giving them a semi-autonomous command(answerable only to the ONSA and Presidency), with the goal to flush out terrorists in the NE, then it would have made more sense.

Turning people's children into soldiers without volunteering for it is a bad idea, national guard or not, this isn't what NYSC is all about, if Nigeria need people, don't use slave labor, hire them, there are tens of millions of people in Nigeria that can fill that role, NYSC should stay as it is.
No parent slave to send their kid to school only to end up in harms way without consent.
We have one of the youngest population in the world, use them.

Countries with shortage of manpower or low population while facing enemies or adversaries with numbers do this, it doesn't have to be current adversary, it easily could have been historic, so they left it on the books.
Now i don't know the population in those countries you mentioned, but i bet Nigeria dwarf them, so why not hire people for it when we have them in the millions? What enemy are we facing that requires us to start conscription.

Finland and Denmark have Russia to worry about, and the one in Asia, perhaps worried about China or Japan / North Korea

For now bokoharam don't have the capability/weapon to bring down an Aircraft save for AA which most atimes they don't have the requisite technical know-how to use it against an Aircraft, they usually use it for surface to surface engagements.
Most likely the crash will be as a result of poor weather or technical fault. I suspect the former, because visibility is too poor this season in the northeast.

It is very difficult for an RPG especially the type bokoharam is using to hit an aircraft when airborne basically because of the missile's flight trajectory which is parabolic and can only attain a height of 500m. Except the Pilot has poor situation awareness/ preflight briefing which is most unlikely.

It's not that difficult

Every projectile including bullets follows a parabolic path , that does not mean the bullets or other projectile cannot hit a airborne target.

If there is sufficient ground clearance for the RPG back blast and the RPG is fired at a good estimated impact point it can hit a helicopter successfully.

RPG with impact fuze will detonate on impact with an airborne target provided it hits the target between 10 - 900 m.

@10 meters or so the arming fuze activated and @ 900 meters or so the warhead self detonates.

RPG r generally targetted at airborne targets < 900 m , ie during hovering over LZ during landing or take off or during low pass manuvers .

I am personally aware of lone RPG operators squatting on tree tops trying to hit helicopters.

It's very possible for RPG to hit an aircraft in most cases it is usually when it is hovering, taking off, landing or very low flybpass but when it is already airborne and in cruise altitude then the chances are very slim in respect to the downed helicopter, I doubt if it was hit by an RPG, I maybe wrong though.

Someone here was talking about BH laying their hands on MANPADS, Abeg make una no reason reach that level because with the way things are going if those guys acquire those equipments it will seriously affect the operations of the NAF especially during close air support operations.
We don't pray for that for now.

We don't lack raw manpower but we are badly lacking trained manpower.

Hence the suggestion of NYSC becoming a program to produce same via introducing basic Infantry training.

MILITARY ISSUES ARE NOT ALL COMERS AFFAIRS

1. The Nigerian Army (NA) has observed with concern the recent negative reportage and criticisms of her activities in the social and mainstream media especially as it relates to equipment and attacks on troops’ locations in Operation LAFIYA DOLE. It is further observed that some individuals and groups in and outside Nigeria have been making false claims and allegations that Boko Haram terrorists are better equipped than the Armed Forces Nigeria (AFN). Nothing can be further from the truth as the AFN have universally accepted doctrines, are better trained, equipped and well -motivated. Therefore, there is no basis for comparison between the Nigerian soldier and the Boko Haram terrorists. Whereas the Nigerian military system is voluntary and enlistment or commission are borne out of patriotism and love for the country, the terrorists on the other hand are indoctrinated and in most cases coerced to take up arms against the state and humanity.

2. These issues are further exacerbated by a section of the media, possibly at the behest of some disgruntled elements in the society. The attacks on NA troops are not as a result of superior arms or equipment, rather it is due to the use of psychological weapon which is as good as any lethal weapons. The psychological attacks have been further aggravated by some unpatriotic elements in the society that take joy and pride in propagating such falsehoods.

3. It is surprising that some Nigerians, for whatever mundane reasons, would compare a group of confused and misguided elements operating under the influence of drugs and warped ideologies to NA troops. It will be necessary to observe that unlike the NA, the terrorists live amongst the populace and used that opportunity to spread their propaganda. NA fights according to set down ROE while the BHT does not. Also, while the NA seeks to protect lives and properties, the renegades seek to destroy same.

4. Our conviction is that these negative comments about the NA are aimed at demoralizing the troops and breaking its cohesion. They are borne out of selfish, political and unpatriotic reasons with a view to bringing down the government of the day. We totally condemn and reject the insinuations that the BHT are better equipped than the NA. Rather, we are bold to say and re-affirm that NA troops are better trained, equipped and better motivated than the rag-tag BHT. Indeed, there are no basis for comparison.

5. It should be realized that the use of psychological attack on the NA is as potent as the use of arms and ammunition. Unfortunately, the psychological attacks are not being waged against the NA by the BHT alone but also by some misguided elements both within and out of the country, either under the guise of humanitarian and Human Rights concerns or low morale. Far from that, most of these false allegations were based on selfish and mostly political reasons by unpatriotic elements. Despite extant rules, these group of persons discuss highly classified military issues which they are mostly ignorant about on various media platforms. Indeed, those who should know better are the ones perpetrating these acts. The psychological effects of spreading misinformation and fake news are grievous and inimical to national security and should not be allowed to continue. Conduct prejudicial to military discipline and cowardice as being exhibited by few misguided soldiers should not be misconstrued as a failure on the part of the military or the government.

6. Military equipment and welfare are known issues in the NA, and when such problems are observed, appropriate steps are taken to remedy them. The President has provided for NA in terms of welfare and equipment. Nigerians are enjoined to note that military issues are not all comers’ affairs. The Nigerian Army will always address its challenges and will take charge of any issue without any external prompting, criticism or condemnation. We will remain responsive and professional in the discharge of our constitutional responsibilities.
