Imolites bid Rochas farewell ahead May 2019

- Say Uche Nwosu can’t be governor

- Advise him to prepare handover

As Imo State government of APC under governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha heads to its final exit on May 29, 2019, a cross section of citizens of the state have used the new year celebration to bid farewell to his administration which they say was a harbinger of excruciating poverty, pains, insensitivity and high handedness never witnessed in the history of the state before. Owelle Rochas who rode into office as governor under the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA in 2011 with unprecedented support and goodwill later drifted and became the most detested leader that provoked hatred and dislike from the populace.

The administration of Okorocha during its first tenure appeared to have a populist coloration as he was hailed everywhere he went, drawing mainly on his free education policy that removed the burden of school fees from parents. During that period also, Imolites witnessed opening and rehabilitation of rural roads, building of hospitals in the 27 LGAs among other projects.
But soon into his second term, things went awry and the governor turned into an emperor, dishing out one trouble each day for those that brought him into power under distressful conditions. He targeted at civil servants and pensioners, cutting their meager salaries and pensions against wide spread condemnation by Imolites and against pronouncements of the courts. He listened to no one in the demolition of properties of poor citizens including the summary demolition of Ekeukwu and New Markets in the Capital City Owerri. The governor was not perturbed regarding the cries of the people as he bestrode the Imo landscape with the swag of a dictator, calling everybody’s bluff and making Imo look like a personal enterprise. Lately, in 2018, he positioned himself as the landlord and estate manager of Imo politics by decreeing that his in-law, Uche Nwosu must be his successor willy-nilly.

He rejected wise counsel from his party men and women and owned up to his own instincts. He allegedly handed over juicy contract and political appointments to his immediate and extended family members with reckless abandon. In laws of all descriptions, siblings and what have you were not left out in this bold and mindless sharing of offices and properties. At some point in time some of these persons held more than one office while the masses of the state and his party faithful mainly groped for the least lucrative position. He created the Ministry of Happiness and Couple Fulfilment and brought his younger sibling to head it as Commissioner. The list is endless, but finally, an intervention came for APC and Ndimo as the Governor now turned into a spectator in the affairs of the party he boasted was his brainchild.

As Imolites joined their counterparts all over the world to mark the end of 2018 and to usher in 2019, the citizens expressed joy that their bondage under Governor Rochas Okorocha is only few weeks to be over when a replacement will come to chart a new and rewarding course for all. A cleric and pastor of God’s Covenant Church in Owerri, Deacon Solomon Nwosu described the experience of Imo people in the past few years as the semblance of the travails of Israelites in the land of Egypt. He encouraged Christians in the state to pray fervently for a governor that will be a clean departure from the outgoing one who will be a yoke breaker and friend of the poor.

The clergy insisted that only a kind hearted governor from a credible parentage and known pedigree is good enough to run the affairs of the state. According to him, “Imo must be returned to its past glory of the Mbakwe era where covetousness and greed for materialism was subordinated under service to the people. I encourage all Imolites to ensure that they rise to the occasion in electing a credible governor for Imo state by making their PVCs ready and participating in the election proper. As for Uche Nwosu, it is a tall order for him to be elected as governor. Both spiritually and physically, he is rejected, and should find something else to do”.

Speaking also, an APC stalwart who belongs to the coalition group but who doesn’t want to be named told our newspaper that what the present governor should busy himself with is to begin the preparation of his handover note to his successor. He predicted that Governor Rochas Okorocha will be a candidate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to answer for the alleged mismanagement of the resources of Imo State. “Rochas will not escape jail. His handling of the affairs of the state is not only suspicious but an issue that any investigator will make good result from”, he stated.
