Bros, I don't think you get the point in the post.

While there were uncertainties around DIAMOND, buying it would be buying into a baseless hope, and like you said, it could turn out sour.

But what I was referring to is a situation where a confirmed news of a proposed merger has been announced, with a stipulated future price of over 200%. That's the opportunity I'm referring to. For those who had funds ready in their trading accounts, you could have easily bought up to 5m units on Monday 17th. That 5m would have become 10m within 3weeks.
Why do you think from Tuesday bids on the stock started averaging about 500m daily with less than 1% getting filled? people were trying to key into the opportunity, but it was already late.

Nairametrics confirmed the news even before market opened on Monday 17th. And on 17th, there were those who didn't have funds at all to take positions with, while there were others who for whatever reasons thought it was in ACCESS they needed to take positions. I can still remember most bids placed before 12:00 at 1.04 were filled.

If you bought dollar when it was already 520, and you became aware of the CBN's interventions, and yet you held on rather than sell off, you're weren't taking opportunity, you were making a silly investment decision.

The opportunity I was referring to is when you see external reserves falling from over $40bn to as low as $22 bn, with oil doing $27 from over a hundred. Then you hear of over $4bn dollars backlog in repatriation demands that the CBN has been unable to meet. You wouldn't need a prophet to tell you that a devaluation is imminent. That's when you seize the opportunity. Not that you jump in when the trends are all reversing, and then quote me wrongly.

And for the guy who was listing stocks that lost money. I don't know what time frame you're picking o. But what I do know is that soon as the I&E FX window was launched by the CBN in April'17, FPIs were encouraged to return. And given the almost rock bottom prices of most stocks at that time. They were mostly cheap bargains to them, and they loaded up. The result? NSE was up 37% 3rd best performance globally. If you looked at between mid April '17 and mid Jan '18, the index gained close to 60%. So you could have waited for a few months after the FPIs started coming to confirm that the market was indeed presenting an opportunity. Then you take position in a few sound stocks, and by exiting in Jan 18, there's a pretty good chance your funds would have been doubled. That's the opportunity I was talking about. Not that you jump in when it's already over, and misconstrue an idea. When that kind of opportunity will again come to the NSE is everyone's hope. It may not be for another decade. Some people think after elections though.

If you still think I'm talking trash. I agree.

This is the second time sukuk was issued. The first was in September 2017, and second one was December 2018. It doesnt come frequently like others. I wil have to go through the budget after approval to see if new issue was included and approved in the 2019 budget.

Great write up. My question is, how do you position yourself to make a gain from this imminent devaluation around the corner?

First, I don't think any serious devaluation is imminent now. But whenever you see the signs, just buy as much dollars as you can, and then store up to later sell after devaluation. 2015-2016 was a good time for this, but now doesn't look good for it yet.

Finally decided to go Long!

From all Indications, I do not see our rates going higher than the 15%...CBN seems battle ready to hold at that rate for now.

nevertheless I have also put some funds in Money Market Fund with present yield at 12.45%

maybe just maybe, we might see some more Oil shocks which may put pressure on CBN and Naira....Then we can move from Money market fund to Treasury Bills at higher rates than we see now.

Also have my eyes on Stocks/Cryptos......the bears there keep making me happy;

We shall all make Money this year!!

You trade crypto? If yes can u put me Through as I intend running it long side Tbills. Thanks

Good afternoon and Happy new year to all our members and gurus in the house. I will be very grateful if someone can advice on the next primary TB auction date. It will also be deeply appreciated, if anyone who has the current primary TB Calendar dates for the next couple of months, can upload on Nairaland. Many thanks and prosperous new year to all our members

How do you look out on when to invest and when not to invest and when they say 57days Tbils does mean after 57days you won’t be able to invest again on tbills and when they say 364 days for 14% would the profit of it be paid quarterly by 14% or overall percentage for the 364 days of total investment.

What investment is profitable and safer apart from tbills.

I wanted to type some answers, but then I realized that the best thing would be for you to follow zamirikpo's advice and read up the first few pages and some other pages at random.

There's nothing I'd say to your question that hasn't already been said. So let's avoid unnecessary repetitions.

Many thanks. I saw the post earlier (attached)but I am not sure if the person who posted it, is sure of the authenticity. I am also expecting the usual calendar that people normally upload on the trend, that includes the different amount that is due to mature and the amount to be rolled over for the usual tenors, 91, 182 and 364 day tenors

It wasnt correct because the post quoted for Jan 3rd was 159.29 Billion Naira but the actual primary auction had total offer and subscription of 74.8 Billion Naira.

Only the date is sure.

NTB calendar is usually quarterly

CBN is better prepared now to absorb shocks. Even Naira is not as weak as people anticipated.

The foreign reserve is not as bad as the period we enjoyed the 18 to 19% rates in Treasury bills.

Sir,

Am a die hard fan of NSE and i will ever be till Jesus comes, i pulled out my money from stocks to TB immediately i qualified for dividends cos i was very sure stock would fall as a result of incoming election. Infact, my broker did not want to believe me but he later chatted me and said he was sure i will be smiling now, for your infor, my target from capital market this yr by God grace is 5m in capital appreciation while hoping to get 1.1m dividend. However, the point i was trying to let you know is, we should also let people know the risk involves we dont just tell them the sweeter part of the investment like in 2008/2009 i know a lot of people that loose their gratuity and many died cos brokers were just telling them to buy trash myself inclusive not knowing a dime about the shares they were told to buy. Where is intercontinental, ocenic, phb, spring bank, and the latest skye bank which i told people long ago not to touch at all cos investors bear the consequences of CBN action on them but yet brokers were still advising their clients to buy these are investment poor people loose their money and lives just because they dont know much about. I have received request for PM on good stocks to buy but i dont do such i rather advice people to read about what they want to put their money into we should not just tell them the sweeter part of the investment we should let them know the bitter part of it like for instance, i bought transcorp 1.34k and following day it dropped to 1.28k i sold @ 1.28k the same stock fell that same day to 1.20k and am writing you now the stock is 1.16K. Thank you but everyone has his risk appetite in variations. The essence of this forum is capital preservations and guaranteed interest. The reason we discuss TB and Bonds here.

Is there a calendar for currency devaluation? Has dollar performed better since August 2017 when exchange rate was 369? Even when people anticipated high exchange this yultide and election period, is there any sign? CBN is better prepared for speculators now. The Foreign exchange futures contract is one tool and policy that is helping to stabilize exchange.

For your information I have locked down 6M @15.74% for 7 years. All interest coming in every 6 months will go into Treasury bills investments at prevailing rates to compound my interests. After 7 years and liquidation, you can come back to this comment and tell me I have run at a loss.

I will be waiting.

Sir you won't run at a loss in naira terms but betting Naira against USD for 7 years is a risky one. USD is a strong currency whose governments has world calss businesses such as Apple, Amazon, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Coca-cola and so on that is exported everywhere in the world and has their money repatriated to their host countries, USA compared to Naira that is being defended solely from petrodollars that moves in cycles. The only way Emefiele will keep defending Naira is when oil price stays above $50, once it nosedives to below $50 or those "Pipeline Engineers" in Niger Delta resumes to their normal bombing, then expect a serious devaluations.
All the best sir in ur 7 years locked down.

Excellent perspective. Thanks for pointing this out sir.

So for emphasis, Some good investment vehicles can lead to terrible destinations especially if you board when the destination is undefined.

The stock and currency markets can present some amazing opportunities, but unlike the fixed income space, you don't play there with your eyes closed erstwhile, it can give high BP faster than any cholesterol.

Thanks for helping us reach a balanced opinion. Do have a lovely weekend.
