Stinginess and lack of proper maintenance culture will not allow us acquire Sukhois. At least thank God for the current CAS, things are better in terms of operational efficiency.

In any case, I think acquiring Saab Gripens will be much better than JF-17s. It may be a bit more expensive, but from what we know, it's has a very high range, low cost of maintenance and a higher payload. And of course, from my knowledge of Swedish internal politics, there will be little to no bottlenecks because those guys are very willing to assist us fight terrorism.

If we want to buy cheap single engine fighters, then at least we should buy good ones, not experimental products. The JF17 is good, but I think the Gripen is better. Half a dozen Yak-130 will also do a lot to improve ground attack capabilities if we want to go the twin engine route, certainly better than those turbo-props we bought for 2/3 of a billion dollars.

Great analysis. smiley

It seems Nigeria is following the only really effective COIN strategy there is - take, hold, clear. except Boko decided to try to interrupt the “hold” stage

If you're talking about the Gripen E/F, it's a better aircraft than the JF-17 Block II.

The Gripen C/D and the JF-17 thunder are the same type of aircraft, similar weight class and similar capabilities. The JF-17 has a better combat range than the C/D.

The C/D only has a slightly better payload than the JF-17 Block II.

The Gripen uses an American engine, so the Americans would veto any sale.

The Gripen C/D is not better than the JF-17 Block II.

You need to conduct better research.

I wonder why he said this
(Who operates the Gripen C/D?)

It’s a proven platform, it is cheaper to buy and cheaper to operate.

Ps: the engines are Swedish (volvo)

Well, I may be mistaken, but from what we know, gripen engine is Swedish, not American, unless Lockheed has somehow bought Volvo without the world knowing. Part of the avionics have American input though.

Another point is, I don't think the current US administration will veto the sales of gripens to Nigeria. Trump's policy direction isn't like Obama's.

In general, the Gripen is a tested aircraft, and has superior avionics and far higher payload(6500kg compared to JF17's 3,800kg or so), a very short turn around maintenance time too. We don't even know if the JF17's we are ordering comes with AESA, we don't know the block we are ordering. So yes, I think the Gripen C/D is better than the JF-17 II.

Before i proceed, can you post the evidence that supports your claim that the Gripen gas superior avionics over the JF-17?

The Gripen C/D engine is a license produced F-18’s General Electric F404-GE-400.

For educational purposes, here's a side by side comparison between the JF-17 Block II and the Gripen.

The information is gotten from open-sources.

It makes you wonder why anyone can comfortably claim the Gripen C/D is superior to the JF-17 Block II. undecided undecided

Lol

This was debunked by JLN (the devil is in the details) - having inflated and misleading stats.

Example: Henry’s infographic lists the jf-17s payload as 5 tonnes when it is actually 3tonnes
https://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/fc1xiaolongjf17thund/

It’s just another case of Henry120s obsession forcing him to dishonesty.

Information about these platforms are open source. The Gripen's advanced data link alone is enough to put it above the JF17. With the Gripen, there is little need for AWACS, pilots can communicate with each other and ground forces, and even feedback data to CCC at real-time. This is a very big advantage for CAS operations.

Other factors like higher payload, better maneuverability, and the fact that a team can fuel and arm the fighters in less than 10 minutes cannot be downplayed. Saying the JF-17 II is better than the Gripen C/D is not factual.

The Gripen engine is not exactly a "license produced" GE F404-GE-400, it is merely modelled after it. I think there is a difference.

Volvo-Flygmotor RM12—a derivative of the F/A-18’s General Electric F404-GE-400. It’s a myth that Sweden developed the Gripen entirely on its own, a lot of the technologies like the engine, were outsourced to keep costs down

What evidence do you have to support the Gripen gas a better data-link than the JF-17?

Uncle, you have been typing in fluent English since, so I assume you understand the language. When they say something is a "derivative" of something, what does it mean?. Does that mean that the RM12 and the F404-GE-400 are the same engines?. Heck, China does the same thing with their fighter jet engines all the time, the recent WS-15 is a derivative(almost a total knockoff) of the Russian R-79V-300, that doesn't make it the exact same thing.

If we want to use the argument that the Gripen wasn't entirely built by Sweden, we can say the same for the JF17 which is heavily dependent on Chinese engine and avionics. I don't see that as an issue as it doesn't affect the efficiency.

Come on boss, this is something that is on public domain. It has even been discussed exhaustively on this thread. The Gripen has one of the best data-link system in the world. Something we can't say for the JF17, most of the info we have about the JF17 is speculative and sometimes exaggerated.

It clearly says the engine is outsourced.

The JF-17 is a Chinese fighter jet.
