I disagree with you with a couple of jumps his fear for heights will drastically reduce if not eliminated, the fact that someone has acrophobia doesn't mean such a one is a coward or Lilly livered it's just a natural way the body adjust to circumstances it's not used to, same scenario is being experienced by cadet pilots on their first flight with there instructors, some even vomit heavily on Simulators without having a feel of the real thing but with time their body will adjust to it. Some of the bestbpilots in NAF today will relate with what I'm saying because they've experienced it.
Maybe I am being too harsh on the guy, but I feel it isn't just a matter of him fearing heights, it fundamentally a matter of cowardice. I may be wrong though. You gave a good example of pilots, though I think that is different.

Why is he afraid in the first place?, because he is imagining that the rope may break mid-air and he will fall straight to his death, so indirectly, he is afraid of death, which is understandable, nobody wants to die. But ironically, that is what military job entails, paying the supreme sacrifice. How are we sure that the same fear of death will not overwhelm him when given a gun and told to face deranged terrorists?.

I am sure many of the other guys who jumped were initially terrified, it's reflex to be afraid of heights, considering that we humans are terrestrial creatures, we can't fly. But those guys swallowed their fear and jumped anyway. In his case, he just couldn't jump, despite seeing others before him do it without consequences, despite the way the instructor was trying to boost his morale. It shows traces of cowardice, which isn't just good enough

JUST IN....

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Yusuf Buratai, was at the battlefield to provide direction and boost the morale of fighting soldiers as the military launched a grand air and ground offensive against terrorists in Borno State Monday.
The 120 Battalion of the newly formed Nigerian Army Special Forces Command neutralised 100 terrorists in different battlegrounds on day one of the offensive.
Buoyed by the Chief of Army Staff’s presence and motivation, the troops in the frontline are in renewed positive fighting spirit across the theatre to stop incursions and annihilate the terrorists.
The battle has now further shifted to the fringes of Lake Chad and other suspected Boko Haram terrorists enclave along the borders.

Easy to do when a "sugar daddy" like Saudi Arabia and the UAE pays all the bills.

New NAF video highly commendable. They were able to 'seperate the boys from the men' in the battle. Also, this video shows that BHT dont just attack with 4 or 5 technicals. They come in convoy of up to 10, if not more.
It is to NA advantage that those BHTs are coming out to attack. Opportunity to massively degrade their arsenal.

NAF AIRCRAFT DESTROY TERRORISTS’ GUN TRUCKS IN NIGHT ATTACK AT AUNO IN BORNO STATE

The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has destroyed some terrorists’ gun trucks in air strikes conducted at Auno in Borno State. The attacks were executed yesterday, 7 January 2019, whilst providing close air support for ground troops who were responding to an attack on their location. The ATF scrambled a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet and an Mi-35M Helicopter Gunship, supported by an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft, to locate and engage the group of terrorists’ gun trucks.

Overhead the target area, the ground troops were seen engaging the terrorists, who were in a convoy of gun trucks, in a fierce gun battle. After deconfliction, the Alpha Jet and Mi-35M took turns in engaging the terrorists causing them to beat an immediate retreat. In the process, 3 gun trucks were hit and destroyed while several of their fighters were neutralized. The hall of fire from exploding munitions in one of gun trucks was visibly seen. Some of the survivors, who were seen attempting to flee the location, were taken out in follow-on attacks.

Part of training is learning to conquer your fear, they should give it time and he will get used to it without fear, Undergoing training mold a simple man into a soldier, it's part of training. Nothing wrong with initial fear, it's their job to train him and get rid of that fear

I dont think that is an ambush. They detonated an IED and decided to spray the bush around with bullets, just in case insurgents were planning an ambush.
