Information Makes All the Difference.
An excited Philip Akpoesiri Mike-Ifeta moved to Edmonton, Canada, with his family on December 21st, 2017. In Nigeria, he had worked in the banking and financial services industry and had developed extensive experience in retail, small business, insurance, pension, asset management and customer service.

His decision to move to Canada was stirred by a desire to “avail our children a better opportunity at education and life in general.”

Settling into Edmonton was not a problem. Philip had an elder brother who lived there with his family. That made Edmonton a natural destination of choice. What was paramount on Philip’s mind however was getting employment in good time. Fortunately for him, he had equipped himself with all the job search information he could find before arriving in Canada. The strategies he learned in his quest for information would come to make a difference in his search for a dream job that would match his skills, experience and aspirations.

“Information is power you know; it was information that helped us get through the immigration application process successfully and we believed that getting additional information would aid us in settling down in Canada quickly. We attended an International Organization for Migration (IOM) session in Nigeria and also looked for pre-arrival agencies online. There is tons of helpful information online, and many good agencies that offer free advice and courses to immigrants. It was a worthwhile experience as we got the much-needed information that eventually proved to be very useful,” Philip explained.

Philip’s job search took all of two months. “I signed on to the popular job site, Indeed.ca and set up mail alerts for jobs that matched my skill set and I kept the resumes going out for every and any role that matched my skills.”

By the end of the second month he was invited to interview with TD Bank for a customer service role. Philip’s interview with the bank proved to be an immensely successful one as the outcome exceeded his own modest expectations. He got hired for a relationship and asset management (banking and finance) role instead following what was inevitably a remarkable interview!

“The recruiter called back promptly and ahead of the scheduled feedback window to congratulate me stating that the interview panel was very impressed and had recommended that I be hired for a full-time financial services representative role immediately!” Philip enthused.

“Two magical things happened in that instant – I got a full-time higher level role than I applied for and got a role that would have otherwise required me to possess the Investment Funds in Canada Certification (IFC) which I didn’t have. TD paid for the exam and registered me with the province as part of my Certified Advisor Program with the bank,” he added.

He advises immigrants whose job search is taking longer than anticipated to, “keep trying, keep the applications going, seek information, look for settlement agencies, network, pray and have faith, believe in yourself, and it will definitely happen.”

You can't tell me, especially as a business man, you and your wife did not sit down and discuss the move across the Atlantic ocean. You're making it seem like you randomly applied today, then got it the next day. Then to say "i have decided to go with them and settle down in Canada for the sake of my children". That's pure BS. If business was booming like that, you'd do a soft landing then be flying back and forth in the meantime. Also that statement sets up your children to be blamed for any mishaps that may occur when in Canada. Such as: "see junior, I'm in this position because I came here because of you". Leave the children out of this.

But back to the matter. All you had to say was me and my wife planned this migration and I am extremely nervous leaving all I know for a new country. Can anyone help me with business or employment ideas as the day is reaching, and my nerves are getting the best of me. Is that so hard ? The rest is unnecessary. I'm assuming you did the EE application, did you also use your WES evaluation report?

Yes I did the EE application and I used my WES ECA report for my Application.

When I called NCA though, they said they accept credentials from WES but that the report has to state that the credentials were verified by the issuing institution and not just sent by the institution. On my ECA report, it is stated that the institutions verified the credentials, but I am not sure whether they will state the same in the course-by-course report.

I looked up a sample of an ICAP course by course evaluation report on WES’ website, and the verification thing isn’t stated on it. But then again, it could be that a verification wasn’t required for that credential and therefore was not done.

Any advice?

My host in Ontario received a letter from Ontario Trillium Benefit with a pay check of over $300. We are no more in Ontario and we don't know how we came about this.

I submitted our Canada Child Benefit whilst in Ontario but I called CRA immediately we relocated to Edmonton to change our address.

This is just damage control, so many people on this thread and past ones have stated that they were moving for the sake of their kids too and you didn't bash them for it. There's definitely no way the man hasn't thought about it but there are times when your thinking isn't enough and you have to put things in the public domain so those who have been through similar occurrences or have more knowledge can chip in which was what the man did.

The only thing different between what the man stated in his earlier post and what you wrote above is just vocabulary.

It'd be better to send the check back to them, otherwise, once your records (including change of province/address) regularizes, you'd be required to refund the amount. I think it's based on the idea that you'll also receive your new province's benefit.

My daughter is physically challenged from birth but i will not like to go into details of her disability but sometime last year , my wife came up with the idea of going to Canada ,the first thing that come to mind is how disable people are well accepted in Canada society ,they can school , go on bus and many public places have facilities for disable people, hearing that alone bring relieve and joy to my heart because we have visit France, Dubai,Holland,hong kong ,uk and usa on family holiday and I have seen how disable people are well integrated into this societies despite there physical challenges..and i remember my wife telling me then that she will handle everything and only we have to travel with about 27,000 dollars and i remember i told her ,we have 10 million naira fixed deposit at the bank so i can get that within 2 weeks and i convert it to dollars and that about 34k canada dollars so tell them if they want 27k if they grant us resident we coming with minimum 30k dollars and my wife simile and left for work that morning , and like 2 weeks later she told me about English examination she need to attend and it not compulsory for me because she the main applicant with about 5 years of experience and two cert holder from same university and about our certificate verification it was fast and easy I guess because we studied aboard but i never attended any English examination and later she told me we have been accepted on a score I cannot remember the score and now needed to do medical examination and we went for the medical test and a month later she ask I printed my fixed deposit bank statement,company registration and she draft a letter and I read it and sign that the fund is for the family and that all l know about this Canada process and two month later she told me some more document was ask about my daughter issue and she has taken care of that and send the needed document and One morning last month that about 5 month later ,she told me our Residency have been granted ,I was so surprise because it look so easy and fast to me but our daughter comfort and integration in a society is my motivation factor from the beginning . It was after the visa granted that other thought begin to come to my mind. So please do not judge anybody because you do not know the whole story but give your advice based on what you know and it will help . and thank you to everybody that have contributed to my question it highly appreciated

@denaven I think that you may need to consider structuring your business in a way that operations would work without you and you take on more of. Senior management role which can be done remotely when you are not on ground and then you go back and forth as needed, while exploring options for businesses or jobs on this end. Congrats on your PR. I guess the immigration ministers public policy on medical inadmissibility that went into effect last summer worked in your favour.

Please i need you advice,My wife got PPR last month ,we are a family with 3 children but my main worry now is what to do in canada, My wife is a medical doctor but am a private business man but am also a graduate , l have never worked with my bsc engeering certificate and i have little or no working experience on that line .....i do not like the idea of staying back in nigeria while my family goes to canada and l will be visiting sometime,am 37years and l believe in family staying together ..i have decided to go with them and settle down in canada for the sake of my children,i will hand over my business to my brother and my tenant send the annual rent to my accout but what can l do in canada,i know l cannot run my business in or from canada..i just have to face reality on ground and start looking for job but what type of job can l seek as a new arrival with no specific job skill in canada and graduatelly progress ..please l need advice from people on ground on what l can do.

@denaven.Congrats on your ppr.You have no idea what a smart decision you guys made for your daughter.This story warmed my heart.The things we do for dem babies.People with disabilities are really included in every aspect of the society in civilized climes.I work with people with disabilities part time and I am talking from experience.You will not regret this decision and your daughter will realize her full potential despite her disability.As @vcole suggested,restructuring your business is key to get it running even while u r away.Succession planning is key to business sustainability even though you may not be transferring the mantle fully.Given your experience in business nothing stops you from establishing here too.Research is your best friend now to get the knowledge needed to set up. There are also government funded resources for immigrants wishing to start businesses because of the potential boom it will bring into the economy and job creation.A lot of Asian immigrants of Chinese and Lebanese descent have no interest in paid jobs and have gone on to set up successful businesses away from home.There is someone here on an entrepreneurial journey I am not sure of the moniker but you can search for him and connect with him.
With your experience running a successful business in our home country,believe me you will do awesome here should you choose to toe the same path.Wishing you the best of luck and a special hola for your wify.I am indeed happy for your baby girl.
