You think it's every plant that's used to make toothpicks? And Nigerians have made these

Tractors

Domestic equipment like hangers and toothbrushes
Drugs
Infantry fighting vehicles
Unguided rockets
Surveillance drones
The list is getting long.I should stop grin

Why should i Google Nigerian influence in Africa which is non existent , you can't even influence your self and you are dreaming of influencing other African countries

Your only influence is exporting crime to other african countries

Goel:

I used the word usually for a very good reason. Those countries are facing depressions. Moreover, with an exception of South Africa, all of them are living in more advanced stages of society. You guys could face famine if same thing happened to you.
I fail to see where that word "usually" is hidden in your post. Below is what you wrote:

Goel:

No but "poorer" economies grow much higher than "richer" economies.
China, India & ASEAN are still growing despite being big in size because their economies are big because of populations but economies aren't rich.
So tell us why Nigeria didn't suffer a famine since it experienced a recession just like Venezuela did?Since the same factors which cause recessions also lead to depressions which Venezuela seems to be experiencing now. We came out of the recession not because of blind luck but due to certain steps taken by the government and of course the resilience of Nigeria's economy. Today Venezuela is what Zimbabwe was ten years ago where shelves of supermarkets are stocked with only few rolls of tissue paper. grin And you think Nigeria's 2% gdp growth after a recent recession is a terrible thing. While Venezuela responded by printing more money, Nigeria responded by banning blatant importation and reducing official looting. And not many would agree with you that countries such as Venezuela and Jamaica are advanced societies. Medium: yes. Advanced: no. Beside, Haiti and Namibia are other poor economies that also have poor GDP growth. Are they also advanced societies?grin I think I have made myself clear that it's not a rule of the thumb that poor economies always grow faster than rich economies like you seemed to suggest.

Goel:
They are "exceptional" countries.
Or other case could be that most of low income people live in Asia and Oceania and they are growing.

My judgement over recession and revival was about oil prices and Nigeria's consumer class.

If you can give a figure of economic diversity, I'll appreciate. Otherwise, I'll quote a source for it.
That judgment is partially correct at best. Oil makes up just 10% of Nigeria's economy.

Goel:
Well, if things were that straight forward, there wouldn't have been argument between Africans for having most beautiful places.

Well, if you're asserting so, I'll step back a bit. I know about Asian economies primarily and get an overview of other economies. For Nigeria, I had opinion for oil & young population coz Nigeria's economy is dominated by oil.

Population growth rate of India: 1.09%
GDP growth rate of India: 7.4%
So, GDP per capita growth rate: ~6.8%

Population growth rate of world: 1.09%
GDP growth rate of world: 2%
So, GDP per capita growth rate: ~1.8-1.9%

Population growth rate of Nigeria: 2.58%
GDP growth rate of Nigeria: 2%
So, GDP per capita growth rate: ~ -1.3%
This is wrong because Nigeria's economy has not always grown at 2%. It ain't fixed.

Goel:

Look you are running high here because I called 6% growth rate impressive. It sucks when your population growth rate is greater than 1.75%. So, is Pakistan and so is Nigeria in this aspect.
I don't know what you mean at the bolded. You seem to be getting angry about something. grin I don't think your opinions about Nigeria has any relevance to how I feel since you've already displayed some ignorance about Nigeria's economy here. FYI, Nigeria's economy grew at 10.5% in 2003 ,11% in 2004, 2005-- 6.5%, 2006-- 6%, 2007-- 6.5%, 2008-- 6%, 2009-- 7%, 2010-- 8%, 2011--7%, 2012-- 7%, ,2013--5.8%, 2014--6%....it continued that trend until 2015 when the recession set in. Now, that was impressive.
Goel:

Moreover, maintaining the growth for just 5-7 years isn't enough either. Economic booms which are known to transform countries are known to run for decades, not short lived blooms.
And governments design their policies and economies for it, struggle for it.
Well, that growth ran for more than 5-7 years. It was on for 12 solid years. And what's more, the Nigerian economy has started growing again. It's just like you said: there's a lot about the Nigerian economy the Kenyans and by extension, other outsiders can't understand.

Goel:

Well, I've found individual project basis flaunting from Twitter. They might be fanboys if not politicians. In East, it goes statistically, in West, it goes subjectively.

A figure of local infrastructure firms would reflect better. So, how do Nigerian road authorities work? Do they assign tender.

You could use the figures like Nigeria's infrastructure budget or length of paved roads and highways completed every year.
Well,we still have a huge infrastructural deficit but we are working at bridging that gap. The government is trying to bring private participation into it. For example, the Apapa port road is being rebuilt by Nigeria's been biggest businessman. But majorly, infrastructure development is still in government hands: an example is the SGR. How do you do it in your country?

Goel:

Well congrats for what you've done. I'm just asking for minimizing the effect enough to attract more investments. Minimal terrorism ensures safety to assets. So, more investments will be there.
Thanks. I almost didn't believe what our military did with the Boko Haram thing. It has been largely restricted to the fringes if north eastern Nigeria. Our economic centers have always been free from terrorists. That accounts for why Nigeria continues to be top spot for FDI coming into Africa.

Goel:

Those are supplementary things which can't rapidly add up things as easy you think. Moreover, Nigeria has to lift lot people outta poverty. Profit margin is minimal in agriculture. Technological advancements for military & space programs or expertise of other sort of research won't be there.

Clothes, steel & concrete etc. industries produce commodities consumed nearly by everyone with little fluctuation in demand and give relatively better profit margin, it will be ideal being deported from developed and upper middle income countries now.. Lightweight industries will bloom themselves with demand.

If you want to do anything, no country has achieved economic boom without focusing on heavy industry i.e., boilers, reactors & machinery.
Agricultural stuff can be imparted. When India and SE Asia underwent green revolution, worlds had scarcity of food which doesn't exist today.
Countries who make finished products have better growth, trade balance and life thanexperiencedcing raw material.
You are wrong here. What you said earlier on was that the easiest and most profitable industries Nigeria' needed to provide wealth and employment were steel and apparel. While those industries are crucial, they are hardly the best at the moment for Nigeria. Agriculture and processing of agricultural products can actually make Nigeria rich, coupled with more exploitation of our massive natural resources potential. Arable land in Nigeria is largely unexploited now. We could produce more cocoa and export chocolate products. We could produce more palm oil and export more. Poultry production right now is lifting many out of poverty. Look up nairaland agriculture section. We could produce more meat and export. Our agricultural potential is huge and largely untapped. It is worth more than. our oil sector and is easier to tap into and could provide more wealth and employment than steel and apparel.

Goel:

Let's a bit honest to both. Kenya and Ghana have been far more successful in socio economics. Nigeria's per capita income is close only because of oil. Without it, its no different than Congo or Niger.
Nigeria's per capita income is not higher than Kenya's and Ghana's because of oil. That's an ignorant assertion. Oil contributes less than 10% of our GDP. Many of you do not know this.

Goel:

On other hand, its only substantial country in Africa and destined to lead Africa one day even if caught up with world average.
It's population with a reasonable income will allow it to emerge as a significant power on world map.
Nigeria is on that path already. The challenges are huge but they are not challenges no other country has suffered. grin Both China and India have been there. And yes, if any African country stands the chance to be a significant power, that country is Nigeria. That fact is the reason this thread is this long. Some people are arguing against the grain and the obvious.

Check Nigeria's PMI and Kenya's PMI. That would show you your manufacturing is below Nigeria's. I want to believe you know what PMI is.
