Goel:I fail to see where that word "usually" is hidden in your post. Below is what you wrote: Goel:So tell us why Nigeria didn't suffer a famine since it experienced a recession just like Venezuela did?Since the same factors which cause recessions also lead to depressions which Venezuela seems to be experiencing now. We came out of the recession not because of blind luck but due to certain steps taken by the government and of course the resilience of Nigeria's economy. Today Venezuela is what Zimbabwe was ten years ago where shelves of supermarkets are stocked with only few rolls of tissue paper. And you think Nigeria's 2% gdp growth after a recent recession is a terrible thing. While Venezuela responded by printing more money, Nigeria responded by banning blatant importation and reducing official looting. And not many would agree with you that countries such as Venezuela and Jamaica are advanced societies. Medium: yes. Advanced: no. Beside, Haiti and Namibia are other poor economies that also have poor GDP growth. Are they also advanced societies? I think I have made myself clear that it's not a rule of the thumb that poor economies always grow faster than rich economies like you seemed to suggest. Goel:That judgment is partially correct at best. Oil makes up just 10% of Nigeria's economy. Goel:This is wrong because Nigeria's economy has not always grown at 2%. It ain't fixed. Goel:I don't know what you mean at the bolded. You seem to be getting angry about something. I don't think your opinions about Nigeria has any relevance to how I feel since you've already displayed some ignorance about Nigeria's economy here. FYI, Nigeria's economy grew at 10.5% in 2003 ,11% in 2004, 2005-- 6.5%, 2006-- 6%, 2007-- 6.5%, 2008-- 6%, 2009-- 7%, 2010-- 8%, 2011--7%, 2012-- 7%, ,2013--5.8%, 2014--6%....it continued that trend until 2015 when the recession set in. Now, that was impressive. Goel:Well, that growth ran for more than 5-7 years. It was on for 12 solid years. And what's more, the Nigerian economy has started growing again. It's just like you said: there's a lot about the Nigerian economy the Kenyans and by extension, other outsiders can't understand. Goel:Well,we still have a huge infrastructural deficit but we are working at bridging that gap. The government is trying to bring private participation into it. For example, the Apapa port road is being rebuilt by Nigeria's been biggest businessman. But majorly, infrastructure development is still in government hands: an example is the SGR. How do you do it in your country? Goel:Thanks. I almost didn't believe what our military did with the Boko Haram thing. It has been largely restricted to the fringes if north eastern Nigeria. Our economic centers have always been free from terrorists. That accounts for why Nigeria continues to be top spot for FDI coming into Africa. Goel:You are wrong here. What you said earlier on was that the easiest and most profitable industries Nigeria' needed to provide wealth and employment were steel and apparel. While those industries are crucial, they are hardly the best at the moment for Nigeria. Agriculture and processing of agricultural products can actually make Nigeria rich, coupled with more exploitation of our massive natural resources potential. Arable land in Nigeria is largely unexploited now. We could produce more cocoa and export chocolate products. We could produce more palm oil and export more. Poultry production right now is lifting many out of poverty. Look up nairaland agriculture section. We could produce more meat and export. Our agricultural potential is huge and largely untapped. It is worth more than. our oil sector and is easier to tap into and could provide more wealth and employment than steel and apparel. Goel:Nigeria's per capita income is not higher than Kenya's and Ghana's because of oil. That's an ignorant assertion. Oil contributes less than 10% of our GDP. Many of you do not know this. Goel:Nigeria is on that path already. The challenges are huge but they are not challenges no other country has suffered. Both China and India have been there. And yes, if any African country stands the chance to be a significant power, that country is Nigeria. That fact is the reason this thread is this long. Some people are arguing against the grain and the obvious. 1 Like
