The only state owned and managed Category 2 airport in Nigeria has undergone a face lift that will add a second parallel runway to the existing 3.5km x 60m runway 21 at the Akwa ibom international Airport in Uyo, Nigeria which is now called Victor Attah international Airport. The Second runway is an architectural master piece both in aesthetics, design and function. The second runway on completion will run parallel to runway 21 and will be equally 3.5km x 60m with simillar CBT compact base to allow for very large aircraft landing. The novelty of the second runway at the airport is that the second runway is designed to also function as a taxiway and will only operate as a runway, when the main runway alignment 21 is shut down either for maintenance or for emergency. This is a new thinking in Airport runway design and development as it environmentally friendly and saves cost in runway construction and maintenance. This Airport is one of the few in the entire west African region that was designed with and Cargo and Aircraft maintenance and overhaul MRO facility. The new Nigeria Carrier Ibom Air www.ibomair.com has selected this airport as its hub. This development will add verve to the Airport and is also expected to bring life to the MRO facility at the airport whose building was completed 4yrs ago but could not attract any airline maintenance company. With the coming of Ibom Air with 3 Bombardier CRJ 900 as starting fleet, the beginning of maintenance activity at these MRO may have just been ignited. The Second runway is constructed by the itallian construction firm Ghitto Constuczioni who also constructed the first runway. 3 Likes

This is commendable by the Akwa Ibom State government. The state is gradually becoming and industrial and commercial hub. Lagos should watch out as they may soon be given a run for their money 2 Likes |

baralatie: Yes it will be completed by Gods grace. This is a very capital intensive project. It is heart warming to see a state government undertake a project of this magnitude. God bless Victor Attah for concieving and starting the project, and Godswill Akpabio for taking it to the stage he did and Gov. Udom for sustaining the tempo. On these project the three leaders have partnered exceedingly great. If government worked the way they have done on this project, Nigeria will indeed be great. 3 Likes |

This Airport is one of the few in the entire west African region that was designed with and Cargo and Aircraft maintenance and overhaul MRO facility The taxiway looks good. Hopefully the finish the other projects like MRO, cargo opperations and International terminal soon. These things will make airport more profitable the state. Its been about a decade now they finish the job. |

Blue3k: Airport around the world even the very best are always upgrading. This is no different. I share your sentiments but we must realize that this is a state government initiative wirh very limited funds even in the midst of economic recession, the project is still forging on. Its a gradual process and the consolation is that there is sustainability in this particular airport development. |

Atouke: I want state to reach its full potential. Its been about a decade like I stated. They same way Im on about Lagos 10 year metro line I feel same about Akwa Ibom. Talking about the recession is just an excuse at end of day when we see the state starting an airline, building a 21 skyscraper for companies to rent and other notable projects. The MRO is going to have competition from Federal government. Their MRO will be in much busier airport in Lagos or Abuja. The state should see if they can get the FG to forgo their plans to use theirs. The state could have had the cargo operations long ago if the shed and proper equipment was in place. PS: Do you know If they improved the airfield lightng for for more late night flights. I read that was an issue before hand last year. |

Akwa Ibom airport is one of the best in Nigeria, just that is small, the landscape alone is fantastic, if you have not being there you have missed a lot. 1 Like |

iluvdonjazzy: What do you mean by small ? A small terminal building does not make an airport small. Terminal buildings are temporary and are always constantly being upgrades in airports around the world based on need. What make an airport is the runway not terminal building. Uyo airport has the best runway in Nigeria. Only comparable runway in the country is the lagos airport. Uyo airport runway both are 3.5km x 60m design for the largest aircraft in the world today and the design has room for extension to 4.5km if need arises in the future. Even Abuja airport has just one runway, hence total shutdown last year when it was being maintained bring airline bussiness into Abuja at a standstill. And those are FG airports. The terminal building in uyo is an interim one meaning the main terminal is on the works.but that will only be neccessary when the passenger traffic exceeds the current terminal. |

Blue3k: The state does not need the FG to forgo its MRO ambition to support state, it will be great if the FG support state effort , but thats not going to happen in this Daura govt. Era. Besides The FG has got no fleet, except they are partnering for the presidential fleet or for military aircraft. MRO is dependent on fleet availability and size in order to attract a would be investor. Once ibom air starts it means the mgt of the airline can engage the Bombardier technical services for maintenance operations to begin there, even if they start with rotuine maintenance then its a Begining. And SUCH development can attact simillar aircraft in the region that runs on the same engine/motor as the CRJ can start comming for similar maintenance there. The plus is that the maintenance hanger is complete and only requires tooling based on operators need. The cargo section is also simillar to the MRO, you need and operator to kickstat it. With time when Ibom air starts cargo services or another cargo operator comes in, based on their operational need the cargo terminal can be designed and built. But the main ingredients for cargo operations is the two 3.5km by 60m runway that already exists in this airport. Such runways are gold standard for cargo operations which usually utilises wide body aircraft that require these kind of massive runways. So the state is investing in the right things. For the airport lighting, Akwa ibom state has one of the few airports with Night operations capabilities eventhough there are no operators that operate domestic routes at night because most other domestic airports are not night operation capable. Few times it has been operable at night is during pilgrimage to Iseral Tel aviv via Atlas Airlines. GOV. UDOM Recently built a power substation dedicated to the airport so this airport for the first time has been linked to the national grid via the state owned 191MW ibom power station www.ibompower.com 1 Like |

Atouke: Like I said the advantage is with other airports with higher traffic. Where do you suppose the planes will be stopping regularly. The MRO they've yet to secure investor. I agree about ibom air being serviced there as given. The fact is they should get it done already it. The project was commissioned in 2012 by Akpabio and is only completed at 70%. The hanger is completed but the project isn't. Udom already said his plans I just want then execute. The cargo section is also simillar to the MRO, you need and operator to kickstat it. The Airport lacks a cargo shed and Equipment to have government officials posted. There's already opperators in the region they fly into PHC airport. Cargo gets into Akwa Ibom airport sometimes. According to business day the runway isnt satisfactor for bigger jets but whatever. Few cargoes that manage to pass through the airport are referred to Lagos for processing. This implies that cargoes leaving Uyo airport do not go through the required checks because of the absence of cargo x-ray and screening machines at the airport. For the airport lighting, Akwa ibom state has one of the few airports with Night operations capabilities eventhough there are no operators that operate domestic routes at night because most other domestic airports are not night operation capable. Alright good to know about lights. I already know about substation I posted about it last year. Even the specialist hospital wasnt connected to grid. 1 Like |

Blue3k: You have it wrong here. 3.5km ×60m is standard for the widest body aircraft. Research it. FYI thats the zenith in Airport runway dimensions in Nigeria. And only 3 airports in Nigeria have simillar runways Lagos international, Uyo and Abuja. The domestic wing runway in Lagos is much smaller and the Advantage that Uyo has over these ones is that on completion it will have 2 3.5kmx60m runways Abuja and lagos has just one each. On all other points you are entitled to your opinion, but the facts are straight. 1 Like |
