The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, on Thursday, clarified that President Muhammadu Buhari, did not specify a separate minimum wage for federal workers in the new bill he forwarded to the federal parliament on Wednesday evening.

He said Buhari did not include a separate amount payable by the Federal Government to its workers.

The labour and the government had agreed after series of dialogues, signed a pact approving N30, 000 as minimum wage payable to the federal workers while states and private sector workers are expected to receive N27, 000.

But Ekweremadu urged the members of the newly inaugurated senate panel to look into the issue as well as the exemption of workers in smaller establishments with less than 25 staff.

He also challenged members of the ad-hoc committee to critically look into the concerns of some state governments about their capability to pay the N27, 000 minimum wage.

Ekweremadu subsequently named the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Olusola Adeyeye, as the chairman of an eight-member ad-hoc committee mandated to work on the bill and make their report available within two weeks.

Other members of the panel are, Senator Abu Ibrahim, who will represent the Senate committee on labour; Senator Shehu Sani, representing the North-West and Senator Sam Egwu, representing the South-East.

The rest are, Senators Suleiman Adokwe (North-Central); Francis Alimikhena (South-South); Solomon Adeola (South-West); and Binta Garba. (Credit)

N27,000 and yet the world would hear before payment. Now, it seems the amount has been fixed leaving a more serious issue of: when will the implementation starts?

Ekweremadu is just being mischievous. Buhari cannot obviously send two different minimum wage rate to the National assembly for legislation. There can only be one minimum wage for the country and N27,000 it is. However, Federal government on its part had decided to pay a minimum amount of N30,000 to its workers. That decision doesn't need legislation approval. Minimum wage is the base, any government or organization can pay above N27,000.

There is no decision that can be taken again after the tripartite committee have long reached a conclusion on this sensitive issue.
This controversy will only lead to more litigation against the govt @ the courts as the constitution is expressly clear on this.Dont be clever by half bro.

Labour should mount pressure on the National Assembly to approve N30,000 for both federal and states' workers.

I don't get the point you are trying to make. The proposed national minimum wage is N27,000. So, what is the controversy again? I also hope you saw the part where Ekweremadu told the committee members to look critically into the concerns of some states about their capability to pay N27,000?

Some of you may think you are doing Buhari but sadly, this is not Buhari's problem. If national assembly members like, let them increase the minimum wage to N30,000. Buhari will simply sign the bill into law and pay Federal workers while state governors will slug it out with labour movements in their respective states.

in a country where political office holders decide what they take home as salary from money generated by workers its unbelievable. I sorry those fighting and killing themselves for the thiefs with no conscience.

Guy I am sure you are not resident in Nigeria or not a civil servant in Nigeria but if you do , you must have crossed the river that's why every move to cut the bridge is an achievement. Let's be real for once and consider the scenario:

Family man with say, 4 children (6 in all) is paid N30k as minimum wage. Assuming with the allowances and based on his position he earns a total of N100k. Now, please ration this money under the following subheads:
1. Feeding
2. Accommodation
3.Clothing
4. School fees
5. School materials - uniform, books, etc
6. Laundry
7. Utilities
8. Medicals
9. Transport
10. Miscellaneous

Please also consider the current cost of things and note that a bag of rice cost N18,000 (current minimum wage)
