I would be following up with you on this because we have the same line of work. All the best

Thanks so very much @salford. I really appreciate your response. God bless you. I will make my mind open and make a decision on this. I can as well function well on other areas like manufacturing and any other field also, at least to pay my bills and also build a career in Canada. If Construction seems to be tough to get, I will try explore other areas as available also.
God bless you my Oga

olajide21:
Ethiopian Airline Flight ET910 wasn't Bad at all.
In flight entertainment was ok, though did really pay attention to it. Plane was maybe 40-50 filled. Plenty empty seats..

Enjoy yourself, land safe, settle easy.

Newmum0615 , hello from this side. Please o!!!! This one is not pride. In advance, I am asking that you make it very relatable in words and pictures. Merci tres beaucoup

Why don't you request for a bank reference letter in the required format?
emeify:
Hi guys. I want to send my Canadian bank account to be used for visa application from Nigeria. Do I just use the monthly statements I have been receiving via email or request for one that spans across d months? Does it need to be signed like we do in Nigeria? How many months statement would be appropriate? Thank u.

Hello landed seniors! I have decided to carry myself enter here officially while waiting for COPR. My PPR story has been shared on the sister thread. Una Weldone here oh.

Please I need help from our experienced seniors here. I am a construction project manager with civil engineering background and about ten years experience in the construction industry. Before now, I have been doing some research on the best province for me to land with my Nurse Spouse. Came up with Vancouver BC and Calgary, Alberta as preferred places. But decided to chose Calgary because I read from some sites that Vancouver and BC is generally expensive and tough to survive.
I was chatting with a friend who currently lives in Ottawa Ontario yesterday and he was kinda discouraging me from going to Calgary but rather come join him in Ottawa. He mentioned reasons like fluctuation in oil whic I turn affect the entire Alberta economy, scanty communities which prevents one from mixing up, inability to easily get support from people as most calgarians are ‘mind ur business kinda people’ and all that. The truth is that apart from the fact that I personally don’t like to live in a place that is too busy like Lagos, I also don’t seem to believe there are construction opportunities from what I have seen so far in Ottawa as compared to Calgary, I may be wrong oh. But then, experienced people should please help me.

So I have brought this here for my ogas to help me chuck mouth and advice me oh before I go jogodo for Cannyland.

All what my friend was telling me was that I can easily get casual jobs almost immediately as I land and start looking for better job once I get settled.

Your suggestions and advise would be very appreciated.
@salford, @maternal, @joo2018, @einsteino and all the Oga patapatas, Biko make una helep me oh

I wonder where people get this misconception on Ontario being a rowdy place like Lagos. The only place you get to see lots of people is Downtown Toronto. Ontario province is well planned.

Those methods mentioned work fine. There is one others I have tried, which you may also find helpful.

There are FX dealers on Nigerian group whatsapp and here on Nairaland who may be able to offer you CAD in exchange for Naira. They deposit CAD into your Canadian account, while you in turn deposit Naira into their Nigerian account. It can be very effective and usually happens relatively faster than international wire. However, it's important you deal with someone trustworthy here. Usually, there are friends who can refer you to someone they've had dealings with who is trustworthy.

Don’t do this. Don’t take the risk. Get your funds from financial institutions. There are lots of yahoo boys and girls posing as FX dealers. Ignore any referrals as the source of the funds may be bad. I’m confidently telling you this because of the industry I work.

You are right! Before they label someone terrorist. Actually there is a story about this somewhere on nairaland I think. I can't recall the details anymore but the family used a BDC and were arrested at POE for laundering money for terrorists or something along that line. Their case is still in court in Canada.

Hi Guys, does anyone know a secret to calling CIC and actually speaking with an agent. I have repeatedly called 1-888-242-2100 and followed the voice prompts based on this thread and also +16139444000 for Global Affairs Canada also following the voice prompts and it has never been successful. I get to the end where I should talk to an agent and they tell me every time that all their agents are busy and the call drops. I will appreciate pointers from anyone who has successfully spoken to an agent at CIC before.

As expected I missed my connecting flight to Calgary. We were re-booked FoC. Though some of our bags were over the allowable weight, ET allowed us to pass and AC did not even re-weigh them.

Still at Pearson awaiting flight to Calgary.

Seeing/touching Canadian Dollar for the first time.

I dont know much about ottawa but I strongly doubt that it has just as much construction jobs as Calgary, even with the economic downturn Alberta is passing through. Another thing is Ottawa is bilingual, so the CM job you manage to find may require you to be able to read docs in both french and english. The survival job your friend said is readily available isn't enough reason to move over there. Inshort, if even survival jobs are competitive in a canadian city I live in, then I'd rather go back to Nigeria and continue my career. If you arent picky, calgary should be able to at least avail you a survival job. If he were talking Toronto Vs Calgary, it would make sense cos at least you know you also have a good chance to find a CM job in Toronto while managing the survival job.

As for the city like lagos bit, I dont know where people get that from. It is true that Toronto is the lagos of Canada but this doesnt mean that life in Toronto is same as life in lagos, except you mean the saner parts of lagos ie the likes of V.I. If you arent living in downtown Toronto, the city can easily feel too slow and quiet for a wannabe lagosian. The socalled mad traffic here is the sanity lagos prays for. Canadian cities rarely have anything in common with lagos, except high cost of living. Of course, some canadian cities are much more calmer than some, so Toronto in comparison to other Canadian cities is Lagos but for someone straight out of naija it isnt, at worst you'd say its like Abuja.

Please whoever is considering converting naira or dollars to CAD, please use the Banks. Dem no dey talk this thing twice.

In one of your post I discovered that you work for Canadian government, in which department and how can one get a government job, does one need to know someone already working there, how did you apply and get the job, asking for a cousin thanks
Madam. I work in technical services for a crown co-operation and not the Canadian gov. This is basically a government organization that is profit driven while also providing essential service to the public.
I do not think there is a manual for getting a government job. Apart from your qualification and skills, you apply and go though the assessment process like every other candidate. Depending on your level of experience and job type, you may have to spend time writing test, make a presentation, go through a series of interviews etc You can get a jpb without knowing anyone. Like many others, I did not use networking/connection to obtain my current job. All I had was my qualification and experience to speak for me.
However, now that I am in...I now know why it can be difficult in getting a gov job. Just like in Nigeria, there is nepotism and lots of it.

The points below can help:

-Having a referal from a family or friend can land you an interview. It's now left for you to do well in the interview.
-If you attend some specific colleges or university, you can get in through the co-op programs. Most of our entry levels are through this route. The jobs get posted externally, but HR would look out for past co-op students in the applications.
-If you have some skills (usually engineering or IT) that are rare to find, you will have a good chance of getting in.
-If you are first nations, you stand a good chance. (Your cousin won't qualify through this route if he is Nigerian)
-Some found it easier by applying to an undesirable location.
- Just keep applying till fortune smiles on you. Consistency helps too.

There are some jobs that mimic government as well, and they are qually good.

These are the ones I can think off the top of my head for now. Hope this helps.

PMP is good if you are in project management. I did not practice construction PM in Nigeria, so I can't compare.
