Which 18 months programme does one do to convert from MCB to MedLab and is it BSc Medlab such a person will be given afterwards? There is Nothing like 18months Conversion to MLS. If you want to have a career in Medical Laboratory, then MLS is for you. There is no cut and join. You cannot convert from MCB to MLS because MLS is a professional course and it is regulated.pre-requisite for practice is B.MLS and a practicing Licence. MLS is 5yrs(UTME) or 4yrs(DE)+1yr intern+1yr NYSC. 1 Like |

Normally,You are not meant to be there. A biochemist cannot work in the capacity of a Medical Laboratory Scientist. There is More to Laboratory Medicine than what you think you know in the Lab because you did IT in Chem path Lab. Just try your Luck sha. |

ultron12345: don't mind those agents of deception telling you MCB is better, FYI, I was a former MCB student (mcbite as dey call themselves), that was how we were deceiving ourselves back then, saying MCB is broad, we can fit anywhere, saying medical courses are a limitation, calling medicine and surgery, mericine and suffery..........until I decided to b sincere with my self and do some research that led me to leave my MCB programme in 300lvl to start medicine from 100lvl. Today, I regard that as the best decision I ever made in my life. When I was leaving for medicine, I remember the insults I received from my MCB coursemates, telling me I am a fool for leaving a "broad field" to a limited one. Today, when I see most of my former coursemates and what they are passing through, I thank god for allowing me make my decision. When I see them somewhere or see their pictures on Facebook, I feel sorry for them.
Do not b deceived by them, one thing about them is that they are secretly craving for medical courses but are just too lazy to pursue them. Most of them fell into MCB because they couldnt meet cutoff mark for medical courses. Some will even be saying that they know everything MLS students know because they one shallow course they call medical microbiology. Some even start challenging doctors, saying that it is microorganisms that cause all diseases, and since they are the ones studying microorganisms, therefore they are the ones responsible for developing treatment procedures used by doctors therefore they are more important than doctors and doctors and other health professionals are nothing without them.
Look at the silly girl up there saying you need to read very well to pass MCB, it seems she's insinuating that MCB is harder than MLS.......common MCB that is d simplest course in faculty of science.
And don't let them deceive you that MCB graduates can work in a hospital lab.....it is a contraption from the pit of hell ....MCB graduate have never, can never and will never be allowed into hospital labs, even the MLS graduates are been threatened by pathologists not to talk of common MCB.
One thing about these MCB people is that they are experts in PHD (operation pull him down). They will formulate all sort of lies just to ensure u fall into d pit that dey fell into.
My advice to you, go for medicine, but if it isn't working out, you can opt for MLS but don't even think of MCB, better use ur money to learn work or start business than pay MCB school fees.
Even If u want to lecture in MCB department, are aware that with MBBS (yes with MBBS, u can further in most of the biological sciences like MCB and biochem) and MSc in microbiology, u will start on a higher level and be better respected and preferred to someone with BSc and MSc in MCB. No truer word has ever been said. I’m a microbiology graduate and I can confirm everything you said. 4 Likes |

Nutase: It is myopic to think medlab is more lucrative than microbiology. Microbiology has better opportunities because it is broad and all encompassing. It doesnt limit you to a hospital laboratory like med lab. You have so many branches of microbiology to choose from like medical, industrial, marine microbiology, virology etc just name it. whereas med lab limits you to just one choice. Secondly with your Bsc microbiology you can just do the 18 months med lab program and you switch to med lab and you will always be their boss that is why they have so much hatred for microbiologist. But med lab cannot convert to a microbiologist. please tell me more, what's the program that can be undergone for 18months? |

Now listen Mr. Doctor, where I come from, no one respects you cos of ordinary paper, you only earn respect if you're successful and make impacts in others lives i.e. a wealthy and generous illiterate business mogul garners more respect than a poor church rat doctor. Secondly, microbiologists were the ones in the medical lab before the inception of MLS, MLS came and sidelined MCB but I blame our association cos it seems they're comfortable with this situation and have decided not to act. Now know this illiterate doctor, MLS CAN ONLY SUBSTITUTE MCB IN THE MED.LAB. Have you heard of biofuel? like bioethanol, biogas etc. microbiologists research in that area. One of my lecturers of environmental microbiology works as a consultant for one of these oil companies on EIA, can MLS replace that? We've industrial microbiologists in brewing industries and the rest, can MLS culture organisms that can ferment wine and other foods. So Mr. Rude, get some proper education and stop disgracing your family here. Look at how rude and uncouth he sounds, I pity the patients you treat if at all you get any. OP, my advice for you is; if you're medically inclined i.e. you wana work in the medical field, go for MLS cos MCB has no say in that area for now, better still go for radiography or pharmacy, unless you're comfy with culturing stool, saliva, urine, personally I dislike that but our choices differ. If you want something more vast, go for MCB, graduate with good grades and don't neglect the place of God. 5 Likes |

In Nigeria and other under developed countries, MLS is a better career FOR NOW.. But go outside this country, you can never see a degree in med lab sci in most schools.. That is because it's a broad course and no one can specialise in pathology, micro, biochem, haemo etc all at once.. That's becoming a jack of all trade.. MLS in Nigeria is the reason we will never progress, because no matter what they say, they will always provide mediocre service to health. And in the future, Nigeria will definitely cut off MLS because it's too broad. The reason why microbiogists are not treated well in Nigeria is because they don't further into special fields.. You can't graduate a microbiologist and think you are done.. So my advice is take the MLS career and remain a local champion in hospital that will probably burn out in the nearest future, or take MCB and further into either med micro, research or MPH.. I am a microbiologist and I study Medical Microbiology for master's degree.. I'm currently working at NCDC as a virologist and I previously worked at UNICEF as an intern public health scientist, and I can tell you i have not seen any MLS in the 2 places I have worked.. If you are a committed person, go for MCB and further your degree, during your masters, volunteer for different health programs, I promise you, there are plenty places you can work.. And if you want to a certificate in MLS to work in a medical lab, just apply for a scholarship abroad, it'll take you only 2yrs and a better training.. compared to the joke of a BMLS in Nigeria.. after the 2 years, you'll have a knowledge of many fields in Microbiology and also MLS Meanwhile a MLS graduate can never use 2 yrs to learn all the fields of MCB.. he/she needs to starr a 4yr program again.. That's 8yrs.. compared to 6yrs you'll use.. Argue with your ignorant brains 4 Likes |

I accept BSc MCB is a somewhat useless certificate in Nigeria.. and that's because it's too broad and there are no much industries for MCB to work in Nigeria.. But it's the foundation to many potential success that MLS will never take you to.. It's commitment one will only need.. I still wonder why people who don't want to further and specialise in a field still go for BSc MCB.. Just that we Nigerians want fast and cheap success.. that's why they all stop at BSc.. Doesn't Make it Less Recognized than others. And you have also Met Every professional at UNICEF to Conclude there is no MLS there, Interesting! well, I don't Like Insulting people sha.But you are ignorant. If you Like Do a 5yrs Professional Certification Top up to your MCB,with your Licence, you are not a MLSt.you will only End up in a Medical Microbiology Lab and thats it. What do you Know in Transfusion Science Lab, Heamatology Lab, Chemical pathology Lab, Histopathology Lab,Pharmacology Lab, biomedical Engineering, Forensics These are Aspect of MLS. You think MLS is about MP and Widal Test shey? Nigeria is also Restricting MLS too. About Giving Medical Advice, MLS give Advice to whom it May Concern. I don't have to come on TV before i Give any Advice. You Make it Look Like MLS is just about Test, Test and Test. You want to tell me you have not Seen a MLSt that is a Virologist too.i have seen Plenty.Go and Read about MLS bro. ultron12345: MCBite spotted.
Be there deceiving your self, how many breweries and research institutes will absorb the thousands of microbiologists pumped out every year. Graduates of industrial chemistry and biochemistry and food science are already competing with them for these jobs.
You say u can do course in MLT and convert to a lab scientist, you see how you lie, so medical lab technology and medical lab science is nw same thing? I pity the innocent souls u have deceived.
Microbiology graduates can never work in a hospital lab (unless u do that ur MLT course which turns u into a lab technician where u are regarded as a lesser being in the lab, u are d lowest in d hierarchy, only slightly senior than d cleaners). All those microbiologist u see in d hospital lab are either mls graduates (medical microbiology option) or doctors who specialized in medical microbiology (if you like, b thinking d medical microbiology of Mls and MBBS is d same as MCB). When they see such Mls or MBBS people as lab heads, they start claiming they are MCB graduates.
To the OP, look at his last paragraph, that is hw they lure innocent souls into their trap, making medical courses sound like a limitation, making MLS look bad by saying all dey do is take excreta samples. Just churning out pure lies to deceive young ones. Have you wondered why he targeted medical courses and left out d science courses that are competing with them like biochemistry and industrial chemistry, its because he has a secret craving for a medical course, but too lazy to pursue it, i suspect its either medicine or MLS.
Just watch as his fellow MCBites will gather themselves like a swarm of bees and storm this thread, targeting my head just becos I said the bitter truth Don't mind them my brother. That's what their lecturers tell them. "you can work anywhere bla bla bla"....Just imagine you studying a course and it becomes useless after school..You'll see many of them applying for bank jobs, primary and sec school teachers. I know many of them who are jobless today, even those who were about to get jobs are in different sectors entirely. Dear op', if you can't get MBBS, pls go for MLS because as soon you graduate, you'll be professional licensed and you can work in hospital laboratories. Don't listen to all these people deceiving you because they will not be there for you when things go sour. |
