Currently in several parts of Nigeria, using the left hand to do anything is forbidden and strictly prohibited.

This is regardless of the fact that the individual may naturally be left-handed.

In cases where the individual is naturally left-handed, they are trained to learn to use their right hand to eat, write, to give or take things.

In fact, elders consider it disrespectful if offered something using the left hand. They might see the person offering them something with the left hand as ill-mannered and untrained.

But is this not an overreaction in this era of human rights? In ancient times, twins were put to death.

But thank God that now, such obnoxious tradition has been done away with. Thank you, Mary Slessor for being God’s instrument in ending that gross abuse of human rights.

Won’t it be extra difficult for someone born left-handed to learn to write with their right hand. If you are right-handed, do a little experiment: put a pen in your left hand and try to write. Doesn’t it feel strange?

There is a growing consciousness that people should not be pressured to change from left hand use to right hand and vice versa.

Those still speaking against using left hand to collect things are myopic in their thinking. If many of them are still adopting new ideas, innovations and doing away with some cultural practices, I see no reason whatsoever would make not to change this. Some are even giving bible verses to back their stupid claims that God in the bible emphasized more on the use of right hand.E.g the right hand of God is power.not The right hand of God refers to common speech as a metaphor for the omnipotence of God and as a motif in art. In the Bible, to be at the right side "is to be identified as being in the special place of honor". The same God who created left hand user created right hand user hence we should learn to tolerate and respect them.
