Be Incorruptible Like Botswana Or Become ‘chaotic’ Nigeria, says SA Minister by TMKsouth: 8:20am On Jan 10, 2019 |
https://www.google.com/amp/s/citizen.co.za/news/south-africa/2045078/be-incorruptible-like-botswana-or-become-chaotic-nigeria/amp/ Correctional Services Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla today urged public servants in South Africa to shun corruption, following in the example of an “incorruptible” public service in the neighbouring Botswana. “Civil servants in Botswana, you will encounter this when you visit that country, are so rule-driven — it is painful. Civil servants in Botswana are so conscious of the duties that they must perform. Everyone in uniform, and is an employee in Botswana … to think that you can corrupt them you’re going to struggle,” Makwetla said as he addressed correctional services officers in Pretoria. “That starts from the ordinary, democratic, law enforcement roadblocks. Whoever has paid a bribe at a roadblock in Botswana, could you please raise your hand. There is no one. Botswana police are known to be like that.” “As South Africans, we got to decide whether we go the route of Botswana, in terms of the success of an independent African state written about even in UN literature … but we can go the route of Nigeria – with all those resources, that oil that should have made Nigeria the richest country by far, and even the population, but ended up in the chaos in which Nigeria is.” “I’ve lived in Botswana for five years, and I’ve never heard of a prison escape in Botswana. Never, in all the five years. Maybe I wasn’t monitoring the news properly. I’ve never heard [people] in Botswana saying their offenders have escaped from a prison. In Botswana it’s unheard of,” said the deputy minister. Earlier, the department of correctional services (DCS) said criminals serving time in South Africa’s 243 prisons will be safely kept behind bars over the festive season, a period characterised by inmates’ launching spirited bids to escape jail to spend time with loved ones. “It is our task to ensure that those who have wronged the law, remain behind bars, and continue to serve their sentences as imposed by the courts. Security is not something we take lightly.” – African News Agency (ANA) Thabang Makwetla / SA Dep. Min.: Correctional Services (below) 4 Likes

TMKsouth: That's savagely deep! And the situation is not improving with selective fight against corruption by the current government in Nigeria. Shame 2 Likes |

Well, that's good for us as a nation. We're always being used to show negative examples, it's not their fault. We merited every negative examples. Not being pessimistiic, I doubt if we can ever change on a global view from this negative classifications. No doubt, there are Nigerians whose integrity can't be questioned nor compromised no matter the trap set for them. It might take us a complete generational change to achieve a national rebirt of citizens that will be an envy of nations, in character and uprightness, as well as yardstick for measuring international development and progress. I wish and propose that we start by setting out a day in our national calendar as "INTEGRITY DAY", where all citizens will live and encourage others both in private and public life to do it RIGHT according to law and moral. Who knows, it might be the change we are looking for. May the Lord come to our aid 1 Like |

TMKsouth: It is anyway, but we're living in a global community where everyone's dealings are in the open. Hence, you can advice someone to watch his/her step as they enter a location.. It's quite unfortunate that we are being tagged like that. 2 Likes |

Nigeria was designed for faliure with the faulty amalgamation and the militarized 1999 Constitution. We can get it right just by Regionl restructuring. |

SensorVee: Don't just disagree with the SA minister simply because you still think Nigeria is a great giant of Africa in your imagination. The guy said the simple truth. Nigeria is in chaos. The value system here has erroded so much that 419ers are envied , drug peddlers marry from supposedly responsible homes because money is now the king. Almost every Nigerian gives or takes bribes and today we have turned a blind eye on an intellectual like moghalu to choose between a bigger and smaller evil. It's no news that we are the laughing stock among the commity of nations. |
