What our currencies can buy in our countries forgetting about the value of the product or the service ones get.How can you compare the price of a haircut or bread in Nairobi and Ndjamena then conclude that the Chadian currency has more value because it looks cheaper to buy products there?

Purchasing power parity (PPP) is an economic theory that compares different countries' currencies. It's like saying...instead of just converting our currencies to dollar for comparison, let's compare what our currencies can buy in our countries in order to know d value of the currencies. So, it's a very potent metric.
there's nothing like that. if u want to know, just check the per capita incomes of the nations u want to compare, then finally; u measure them with their respective PPP's.

Looking at that table, I can say Egypt has d most valuable currency in africa, slightly followed by Nigeria, then SA.

But what's the percentage difference in our PPP values? If that value is divided by the total population,what are the figures? If you are going to accept PPP,then be ready to accept ppp per capita!

Nairobi "more lucrative"

“Honestly, we are struggling to sell space in Dar. So based on a long-term view, Nairobi’s capital value will be higher,” said Ben Woodhams, the managing director of Knight Frank – a property firm with a footprint in Kenya and Tanzania.



“At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how much it costs to construct a building but how much returns it generates,” he added.

The World Bank report, however, says Nairobi has the highest replacement value for its built-up area and built-floor area ahead of Dar, Addis Ababa and Kigali, even as it lags the global standards.

“Our analysis of imagery from satellites and geographic information systems (GIS) confirms that in African cities, capital investment not only appears low near the urban core, but rapidly declines outside it.”

Mr Woodhams said property markets in Dar and Nairobi tell of different stories since the majority of new buildings in Tanzania are government-funded while Kenya’s is private sector-driven.

He said that the swanky public buildings in Dar are likely to generate near zero-returns in the near term since they are occupied by parastatals and government departments, meaning Dar is expected to record a drop in capital value should the lull in the private sector activity persist.

yeah, value of products may not be accounted for but that's d main reason products or services of d same value are compared. Examples..

* the price of Heineken in country A vs country B (Heineken is the same all over d world)
* prices of food products of each countries.
* rents in d said countries (the same type of apartment and neighbourhood is very important here) And so on...

So, instead of bragging over "who has the highest bla bla bla" or "who earns the highest bla bla bla" when converted to dollars, ppp must be introduced into such comparison.

But this method also fails to count for different price regimes or taxes in different countries! Our beer tax is one of the highest in the world but our beverage industry is one of Africa's best.People still drink anyways no matter the taxes and it's normal for them because that's the prices! Our sin tax is very punitive,yet this industries flourish.

I guess all metrics have their flows! It's interesting seeing that this list would change if you factor in per capita PPP for example!

sure, gdp by PPP is better than nominal GDP when assessing a nation's domestic market because PPP takes into account the relative cost of local goods, services and inflation rates of the country, rather than using international market exchange rates which may distort the real differences in per capita income.
