That is the way politics is played in Nigeria. dashing out some cups of rice or physical cash to woo voters instead of manifestos and accountability.

Yes,so much more has happened.If we achieve our Medium Term Plan 2018-2022(MTP 2018-2022)....We would be at good places. We just need to actualize like 80% of this and boom the whole country will break into a song and dance! It's doable with the right people and passion!

President Muhammadu Buhari’s party has issued a stern warning to the United States and other foreign allies for allegedly making “unguarded” public statements ahead of Nigeria’s presidential polls this weekend.

The US, Britain and the European Union have in recent weeks publicly warned against vote-rigging and election violence, and also expressed concern over President Muhammadu Buhari’s suspension of Nigeria’s top judge last month.

‘‘Nigerian security services must provide a safe and secure environment for the Nigerian people to exercise their rights," read part of a statement issued by the US State Department last week.

‘‘Those who interfere in the electoral process or incite violence must be held to account."

Nigerian police said five people, all supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress party (APC), were killed during clashes with opposition supporters on Sunday.

Saturday’s election will see Buhari stand for a second four-year term against former vice-president Atiku Abubakar in what is expected to be a close race.

APC disappointed in foreign allies

Buhari’s re-election campaign spokesman Festus Keyamo called the statements from the US and others “notably off-key” and unwelcome.

“Instead of encouraging our country toward credible elections, such statements undermine public confidence,” Keyamo said.

“It would appear that these envoys seem to have discredited the election before it has even taken place.”

Keyamo’s comments come after a key Buhari ally, Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufai, said outsiders who intervened in the election “will go back in body bags”.

Mounting tensions

Nigeria’s last election in 2015 was considered free and fair, but state and local elections, as well as earlier presidential polls, have been marred by violence and fraud allegations.

In recent weeks, tensions have risen between Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) and Abubakar’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The PDP has accused the government of seeking to rig the vote while the APC has said the opposition party is fomenting unrest.

Compared to 2015, international interest in Nigeria’s election has been muted as the US administration focuses on domestic issues and Britain wrestles with its impending exit from the EU.

A British colony until 1960, Nigeria is an ally of both countries which are home to large Nigerian diaspora communities.

I concur. However, I still think the majority of the blame lies squarely on our leaders. All these other problems would minimize if we had good leaders. Some of them capitalize on these issues, to remain in power. It's a bloody shame!

Many pictures are being shared by people on the internet. (in relation to Nigeria election) and it looks like the candidates are pushing way much. Were they holding rice or something? I just didn't get why they did that? I am so lost

Speaking of rulers, I haven't heard any about your government. I think it's democratic. But as government, what do you think your ruler better acheive or improve in Ghana??

Precisely - and that is why PPP is never used for comparing countries - but mostly for internal analysis - like poverty assessment. PPP doesn't take into account taxes, quality of goods & services, transport cost and etc. A haircut in Newyork is not the same haircut in DarSlums.In fact the higher the difference btw nominal GDP and the PPP - the more poverty in that country. You can see such in Tazania & Nigeria. More poverty Low income & wages - leading to cheaper goods and services - but eventually as they grow richer - their PPP & nominal GDP difference will disappear.

PPP are never intended to compare countries - they are misleading because don't reflect the actual conditions of countries. And therefore nominal GPD (in USD) is what counts.

Our beer tax is one of the highest in the world but our beverage industry is one of Africa's best.People still drink anyways no matter the taxes and it's normal for them because that's the prices! Our sin tax is very punitive,yet this industries flourish.

I guess all metrics have their flows! It's interesting seeing that this list would change if you factor in per capita PPP for example!
