The government can afford to fund education if they choose to. Countries like Germany, Finland and others rely on the government to fund their universities except for few schools ( To be the best of my knowledge). I know of a German Nigeria citizen that didn't pay a dime from primary to tertiary education. You begin to wonder why that was possible over there and not here. Corruption has eaten the system up to a point you can't see how much the government had invested in education for the past few years. If the government decides to partner with private organizations to fund universities, tuition fees may go up. Will the citizens be willing to sacrifice or pay high fees? Wouldn't they accuse the government of selling public universities to their political associate? A good example is Edo University in Edo state. That university is as result of public private partnership. Although their fees are high, I was told they give scholarship ( I don't know if it is true or not). Many Nigerians are not ready to bear yet they want quality education like their counterpart abroad. The academician agitating for funding from the government are having issue with released fund because of corruption so how can private organizations partner with them?. Do you expect private organizations to partner with schools like UI, Uniben, UNN,Unilag e.t.c when their vc are not utilizing their resources well?. lecturers are at the forefront boycotting the increment of schools as suggested by the Mr of education yet they want quality education. How can we have quality education if we keep on relying on the government?. There are other areas that hasn't been touched. Many primary and secondary schools are lacking fund so why the concentration on tertiary schools?. Many Nigerians think that tuition fees and IGR are enough to run university not knowing that administrative cost alone is more than the amount generated. If not for subventions, I don't think many public universities would have been in existence. Many are agitating for increase in the budget for education but a large chunk of the funds goes to tertiary schools at the expense of primary and secondary schools. Many think see their are many private primary and secondary schools the government should focus on tertiary schools. It hasn't occur to them that many Nigerians are having difficulty in going to those schools because they can't afford their fees.
Since we want to get it right at our tertiary schools, tuition fees has to go up. For example the average amount charge by many public universities hovers around 50 to 80k( federal universities). This amount is too small. I suggest 250k for the first year and 150k for subsequent years .Once public universities are seen utilizing the available resources at their disposal you would see many persons partnering with them. I advocate and agree with the minister of education on his assertion of educational fund for students that are unable to pay high fees as this practice is obtainable in many developed countries.
With the above fees and contributions from other stakeholders, things might began to change.

This is a good idea though. The problem is that
Nigeria is just different in everything. If we should make donations now, the ASUU ogas at the top may divert it into their accounts and announce that a fowl swallowed the money.

You are right. Those lecturers came up with autonomy because the federal government appoints vc based on political reason instead of merit. may not all, but private funds can go a long way. People will their estates to foreign schools like Harvard.

Are you sure of the bold? I used to think it was done internally by the school. Maybe that's why a son-of-the-soil is always VC to most federal universities.

Am sure of what am typing. Back then many vc from the major Nigeria tribe are appointed based on appointment from Abuja. Schools like Unical, Uniport and others were headed by those tribes until many of lecturers felt uncomfortable with such appointment. With the introduction of autonomy, many federal universities appoints the vc from within instead of relying on appointment from Abuja. What Abuja does is to appoint chancellor. Some universities concluded that henceforth vc appointment must be from a particular tribe or son of the soil. A good example is the University of Benin. University of Benin concluded that henceforth their VCS must be a Bini man. Other federal universities are doing similar thing too countrywide
