I always tell people large percentage of money we are spending in naija, people work for it outside the country.
millions of naija abroad are building houses, funding families at home. with 20 million jobs lost, na naija abroad dey bear the load

I'm very sure that money remitted will be high that this N9trn. people are bringing in raw cash and this "give dollar to my relatives, I'll deposit naira to your naija acc"

Are you for real?. They were remmitting money under PDP govts as well. The point is Buhari policies are attracting remittances. The money goes into building houses, running businesses and general upkeep.

Anything you send to Nigeria and convert to N under Buhari's N365 to a dollar regime, would naturally be higher.

What an irony.... The government translates this as a good development when in actual fact this depicts the the high rate of poverty amongst Nigerians and their recent dependence on relatives abroad for survival; on the other hand, Nigerians abroad are taking advantage of our battered Naira to invest at home.

Signs of a dangerous time! Chizoba!!

I beg to disagree a bit. High exchange rate favours exporters, discourages importation, and encourages borrowing. Reason US fights china anytime they inflate their currency. You guys need to go back to your basic economics.
What affected the common man is NOT exchange rate but 100% increase in petrol price since the end of 2014 up until 2016 which resulted in high cost of domestic goods and Services ~ in other words inflation. Thanks.

The problem with Nigerian figure is that we only get away with the figure without asking questions. Now that we have compared the figure within the past 13years, what is the true value of the money so repatriated with the values of those years under review.

Let's just use year 2015 as a benchmark. Then, $1 = 187NGN
i.e. 1NGN = $0.0054
So the N9tr so remitted is = 9x0.0054 = 48,600,000,000 (N48.6b) as at 2015.

What an illusion!

Putting this up as a direct support for Buhari is foolish. I live abroad and what chased me abroad was the hardship encountered under this government and same can be said of others abroad. Also, the money is that big because our Naira is no longer of value. If I send 10000 USD back to Nigeria in a year, it is automatically a huge amount of money because our Naira is basically useless. So yes, it would keep being like this as long as APC cannot grow the Naira.

I don't agree with you. Could you please send me the $10,000 let me confirm if your statement is true or not

Some people on this thread are blaming it on the poverty level of this country. China and India remit more than us, and is it because of their poverty status.

Just because y'all hate Buhari doesn't mean you be making stupid criticisms.

If you do not know the impact of remittances, ask questions or go and read up! It is not good to show such crass ignorance!

A little education for you. Remittances grow the local economy by boosting consumption. Imagine a family whose local earning is 1m in a year. If their relation send 500k to them in a year, they will save, invest or consume the additional income. All three have positive impact on the local economy. For the consumption part, they can demand for more goods which someone will produce and on and on!
