ifyalways: It was a bright beautiful Tuesday morning in the green forest Eastern Nigeria; the previous night rainfall have sent chilly organic stench in my small village. The goats in the compound bleeting as they expect their early morning ration of palmfronds and leaves ,hens with their little ones chirping and roosting on insects trooping out from their holes to embrace the radiant warmth of the early morning sun. At exactly 7am, I woke up to the realisation that the long awaited day have arrived.... the journey to answer the clarion call in the oil rich Delta state. The camp experience opened up a new chapter,a new breathe of fresh air after the boring 8months sojourn in the village after graduation. The soldiers ordering us around..the early morning drills, the camp activites.. mammy market and the two weeks relationship with Judith(not real name).Having read so many stories of camp life on nairaland, I was full of expectations, no doubt I got enough dose of it. Service year was fun and full of lovecapades... I fell in love with Aisha(full name withheld) she was a black beauty, down to earth and a woman every man would desire. I planned to marry her immediately I secure a job after service year even though she's from Taraba and my old man who never cease to tell stories of how he fought gallantly during the civil war as a Biafran army major will oppose it. After all its one Nigeria I muttered to myself.Aisha is mine a voice reassured me. Immediately I got the NYSC discharge certificate, I joined the race, uncles and aunties were contacted and forward your CV was the usual reply.I polished my CV and paid a CV professional who claimed to have helped graduates secure jobs in multinational oil companies to review it.But why is he still jobless after helping people secure juicy jobs? I asked myself, well our destinies differs a voice inside replied... joblessness is not my portion I said to my self. Fast forward to 8months later, had encounters with 3different scam recruitments,Did over 100 applications, got 3 interviews but the last word I heard from the panelists is "we'll get back to you" no feedback from aunties and uncles.... Friends started leaving... calls and chats started reducing... allawee no longer drops...no job,no friend..no family. Mama became my friend, motivator, breadwinner and adviser..... My retired soldier papa became my closest rival..life became bitter..The clock continued ticking. To be continued please, low battery 10 Likes |

2nd of June 2015 I got a call for an Interview in Lagos as a Sales Rep. I was happy about it and I left my base in one of the Eastern towns of the country. I got to Lagos, stayed in my Sisters apartment and practiced all night. Fantasised so much about the job and how to talk so well during the interview. Did I tell you I bought new shoes and a suit for this. Morning came I had my bath, said my prayers and bade mum and my sisters goodbye. I got to the address in Ikeja. I was a bit confused because it didn't look like a company but like a residential area. I got into the building and asked a guy washing a car if this is "XYZ" company and he said yes. I stood waiting for the the staff to come around which they did around 9am. My interview time said 8:30am. When the opened the door I went in with them, they gave me a seat and told me to hold on for the "Oga". I sat while watching the rehearsing in my head for the purported interview. Around 10am a man walked in wearing a " Coat ", not even a suit. A " coat " the size of Dangote trailer on his extremely slim body. He beckoned I joined him I'm his office, then I learnt he was even sharing this tiny spaced office with three other "companies"... chai!!. He began his questions and I was answering, then all of a sudden he told me he was recruiting for a very big company in Lagos. He told me they can pay any amount provided I always met my sales target. He said they are contactors to Coca Cola, NBPlc, etc. When we were done, he now called the Supposed MD of the " big company " and the man told him he's around that I should start coming. When I was leaving he joined me and begged me for money for breakfast that he forgot his Wallet at home. I just had little money on me as I never envisaged that I'd have to go to another address for another round of interview. The rain had already started, I don't know anywhere in Lagos as I'm not based there, but I squeezed out #500 and gave to him feeling happy this would even make him recommend me more for the job. He advised I should go under the rain, Chai Chineke, with my new shoes and suit plus my credentials. The road was also flooded but I set in. He told me the Company is at "xyz" road by Wewe Chemist. I never hear that name before "wewe Chemist". He told me to get to Oshodi bus stop and then find a bike to the place. I trek o till I come reach where I go enter Oshodi bus for Ikeja. I was asking everyone how to get to that address but no one knew. When we got to Oshodi I luckily met an Igbo Mechanic who had an idea of the place. He called a bike man and the bike said #400 to the place. Odiegwu, the only money I had was #300. Do I find my way back to my sisters place or do I find a way to this" big company " as I believed Satan was doing all he can to deny me this job. The Igbo guy saw the look on my face as the bike man said #400 for the fare. He asked me what I was going to do there, I told him I was going for an interview. By then my shoes and Suit don soak water finish. He pitied me and paid the bike man, wished me luck and we set out. On getting to that road, the kind of Old dilapidated houses I was seeing was a turn off, but my mind kept on telling me " o boy chill the company go stand out for this area". As we got to the address the bike man rode past as me self nor believe na the 'big company ". We got to the end of the road and there was no company at all, I told him to turn make we begin search again. We got to that same Number again, I now saw the supposed 'big company" name written clearly on the wall of this one- room apartment. The building self don tire and the next rain would surely sweep off the building. There were little grasses on the compound. The bike man looked at me and looked at the building. He asked "Oga dem look you finish come say make you work here"?( He heard when I was conversing with the Igbo Mechanic I was coming there for interview). Me self look my suit, my new shoe as rain don design every every. I didn't even come down from the bike, I just told him I'm going to Bode Thomas " please take me to where I can find my way back biko'. He took me to Oshodi-Apapa Express way and gave me details on how to get back to my place at Bode Thomas. When I got home I couldn't talk for more than 30mins as mum and my sisters were even eager to gist them how I landed the job. When I started and concluded my ordeal, dem laugh tire even as that first man collected #500 from me. Till today I still have that shoe and suit with me, they always remind me of my funny movement that day in June 2015. 22 Likes 4 Shares |

BUSTED! I woke up at 5:30am this morning, like I do every other morning. I did some pushups, brushed my teeth and took my bath, quickly ate a light breakfast and was off to work. All of these was achieved in forty minutes. I live on the Mainland but work on the Island. I am an Accounts intern at Zeynet Limited. I have been working here for six months. I was lucky to have landed this job immediately after my graduation from the University of Benin, through my dad's friend. And I have come to cherish it very much. I work as part of a team which comprises Shade, Evans and Faith. Faith and I clicked immediately we met and over time, she has become a bosom friend. As an intern, my job involves a lot of activities and as an enthusiast, I love the extra activities. Today, shady and I are scheduled to deliver some paperwork to one of our major clients who stays in Maryland. I love running this particular errand because of the extra benefits that come with it as a result of taking danfo as against Uber which has been prescribed by management. Shade is always my eager accomplice. We left the office at 11am, because the paperworks were to be delivered by 2pm. The journey to Maryland was uneventful and we delivered the document right on time. Phew! I was already calculating my share from the "benefits" since we took the other route. Decided to board a bus that will take us back to the office. We stood at the bus stop and shortly afterwards a bus pulled up. The conductor was saying something like #500! #500! #500! I thought he was joking so I decided to ask how much and he confirmed what I heard initially. At that moment, my head became hot and I pulled Shade off the bus because she already had one leg in. I couldn't imagine how a conductor was planing on cheating us of our "hard earned" money. Maryland to VI was #300 last week na. I was still arguing with the conductor when I notice Shade looking across the road but I was too engrossed in the fare-reduction debate to notice. We boarded the bus after the conductor had agreed to reduce the fare by #100 for each of us. Shade sat close to window while I was sandwiched between She and a woman nursing a baby. The journey from Maryland to VI was going on smoothly till the baby with the woman started crying. She told me the baby was crying because she was hungry but I too busy to care since I was engrossed with my phone; I should have cared. The woman brought out a plate of pap and was feeding the baby while I was lip syncing Chris brown don't wake me up. I didn't know my village people had something in store for me already. The baby did not stop crying and added kicking to his disturbance. The woman was still feeding him, when something very warm and sticky fell on my well ironed shirt. I looked up from my phone and saw a mass of pap on shirt. I wanted to cry, I swear I could feel the hot tears. How was I supposed to explain myself at the office? The woman tried her best to clean as much as possible but it seemed as if my village people powers were in full force today; the stain refuse to leave. The woman kept apologizing through out the trip but I was in another world; a world where lies are cooked and I am an awesome cook. By the time we got to the office, I already had a confident look on my face, Shade was distant but I didn't notice. We headed to our Boss office to give her a report of how the errand went and I was surprised to notice some of my colleagues were already seated in her office. Boss noticed the stain on my shirt, she asked why and then I served the food I was cooking in the bus. I told her how we ordered an Uber from the client office and it came almost immediately. But we were surprised to see that the driver had a baby in his arm, he told us that his wife left home early and he wanted to drop the baby at a day care in VI. We entered his car and the journey started. The baby started crying. I decided to help the driver carry the baby since I loved kids. And that was how the baby peed on me. I ended my story with a smile and I was even shocked at my flawless delivery. *I should have noticed the giggling among my coworkers and the stern look on my Boss face. But I was too carried away with my story telling to notice or care... *Shade should have told me she saw Madam at Maryland when I was arguing with the conductor... The end. 16 Likes 3 Shares |

Terrifying Monday For some people it was a normal Monday morning with the hustle and bustle of the ever busy Lagos. I just left NYSC Lagos camp and I was posted to a firm that does everything except my field (I studied Building) quite hilarious isn't it?. Anyways, I started looking out for possible change of PPA, luckily I got an invite. The interview was scheduled for a Monday, I left the house early (I stay in ikorodu, firm is in Ikoyi)and the skies decided to cry...heavy rain all through but I was still able to pull through before 10:00 am. It was a construction firm, had nice office environment, good people, everything seemed cool until I saw a fellow corp member,..but the Corpers eyes was filled with sadness,I needed to know why so we got talking and Man was tired of the place, works all through the weekend, pay isn't directly proportional to the stress, sites are far from his location et al....immediately my body system died, I became weak instantly. Well, your guess is as good as mine even before the interview started I had lost interest....for a post as a construction manager (Corper) they were asking me current affairs of which I was able to answer all, they told me how much they were paying and how I was going to work Mon-Sat....at the end I got called but rejected the offer The Devil you know is better than the Angel you don't know!! I will be rounding up Service Mar 14, so just in case I will be needing a Place (construction firm preferable) for Internship...Thaink You. 2 Likes |
