The Oodua People’s Congress has warned the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra against attacking any Yoruba territory based on the alleged attack on Igbo in Lagos State after the presidential and National Assembly polls.

The President of OPC, Rasaq Arogundade, gave the warning in a statement made available to SUNDAY PUNCH in Lagos.

Arogundade’s statement was in reaction to an earlier statement by the Publicity Secretary of the IPOB, Emma Powerful, which claimed that Igbo residents living in Lagos State were attacked during the last Presidential and National Assembly elections and were prevented from voting for the candidates of their choice.

The IPOB publicity secretary alleged that the attack might have been orchestrated by some Fulani people against the Igbo who he said had been victims of such attacks in some parts of the country before now.

The OPC boss said contrary to the claims of Powerful, there was no Igbo stronghold anywhere in Lagos State or any part of Yoruba land, saying such claims were not true.

The statement read, “The Igbo are again exhibiting lack of contentment and appreciation of divine goodness in their lives. Where in Igboland are strangers accorded the privileges being enjoyed by Igbo in Lagos and Yorubaland? Igbo have lived peacefully in Lagos and the entire Yorubaland for ages. They carry out their business and own property unmolested.

“As a matter of correction, there is no single Igbo stronghold in Lagos or any other part of Yorubaland. What exist are areas of high concentration of Igbo dwellers, who live side by side other immigrants and indigenes.”

He stated that Igbo had always been treated well and given opportunity to be elected into the Lagos State House of Assembly and were represented at the state executive council.

“It is no coincidence that Yorubaland (South-West Nigeria) has been the most peaceful part in Nigeria. The relative peace is not because of fear or cowardice but a deliberate policy of our forebears, who after fighting many wars, have resolved to make peaceful and communal living the way of life.

“That we are accommodating and friendly should not be misconstrued as a weakness or sign of timidity as the OPC is fully ready to repel any attack on Yoruba territory from any quarter,” Arogundade added.

Am disappointed in opc.. they should caution their members against attacking law abiding citizens residing peacefully in their own country and carrying out their civic responsibilities. Never in history of the world have i read or heard that individuals will be threatened at gunpoint to vote candidates that are not their choice in an election.even to the extent of actually killing them for voting their choice candidate, like the case of peter at okota. we are not savages. Nigeria is for Nigerians pls
.No Nigerian is a foreigner in Nigeria.. we can always split in peace if we are tired of the union!

I agree, why then are they being threatened by OPC? The security agencies have to do something about these inflammatory remarks, they are always counterproductive.

OPC is a woman Organization. Don't dare lPOB to start getting involved in Yoruba land politics. Ipob is a no nonsense organization.

For this OPC spokes person ranting, where we're your OPC and Yoruba people when Demola was almost being killed like a common criminal.

You guys ran away and left your brother in his pool of blood. Why did you guys not come out and defend him. Cowards. Igbos are peaceful people and will never attack anybody first.

There are more than Ten thousand IPOB members in Lagos. If you guys start any rubbish, the back up will come from the sea and land. Remember Asari and his men are already waiting for this opportunity. IPOB does not joke.

If you guys dare involve IPOB in this matter, be sure Lagos will be too hot for you. OPC are small fry to IPOB. IPOB has issue with the army not civilians. Be warned!

Lagos clashes leave 80 dead
2000-10-17 19:34
Lagos - Fierce ethnic clashes erupted for a third day running in Nigeria's commercial centre, Lagos, on Tuesday leaving more than 80 people dead and bodies littering the streets.
Police helicopters flew over the Ajegunle area which was the main scene of the fighting as anti-riot policemen poured into the district amid the constant sound of gunfire.
Smoke rose into the sky over Lagos's main Apapa Port area, leading to Ajegunle where dozens of cars and homes were burnt.
The fighting between Nigeria's two largest ethnic groups began on Saturday in the central Nigerian city of Ilorin in a dispute over the naming of a Yoruba traditional ruler for the town.
Police clashed with a Yoruba militant group, the Odua Peoples' Congress (OPC). Police said six people died but the OPC said nine had been killed.
On Sunday, OPC members launched what a senior OPC official said were reprisal attacks on Hausas living in Lagos.
OPC secretary-general Kayode Ogundamisi told AFP on Mongunle district had been killed early on Tuesday.
Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu on Monday night slapped a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the area around Ajegunle and on Tuesday convened an emergency meeting of the leaders of the ethnic Yoruba and Hausa communities.
Lagos Information Commissioner Dele Alake told AFP the city authorities were "doing a lot" to try to restore calm.
"We really want to get the situation under control," he said.
Meanwhile, witnesses put the toll from the clashes in Lagos at at least 72.
Victoria Adeleke, a nurse who was working in Lagos's Alaba district where fighting took place on Monday, told AFP she had counted 22 bodies on the street.
Another witness, Patrick Adum, said he had seen 20 bodies in the Okokomaiko district of the city.
Other witnesses said they had seen eight bodies in the Orile district and 21 bodies on the outskirts of Ajegunle, the main area where fighting took place.
The fighting again focused attention on the OPC, set up in 1995 to promote the interests of the Yoruba, one of Nigeria's three largest ethnic groups, alongside the Hausa and Igbo.
The OPC is accused by its critics of being behind a series of attacks on other ethnic groups in the Yoruba-controlled southwest of the country.
The government of President Olusegun Obasanjo, himself a Yoruba, last year threatened an all-out war against the OPC after blaming it for riots in Lagos's Ketu district in which more than 100 people - mainly Hausas - died.
Since then, though regular clashes have occurred with the police, the most prominent OPC leaders have continued to operate publicly. - Sapa-AFP

The OPC man is stupid and see my reason below based on Emma Powerful's words he quoted.

" The IPOB publicity secretary alleged that, the attack might have been orchestrated by some Fulani people against the Igbo who he said had been victims of such attacks in some parts of the country before now. "

Emma Powerful pointed fingers at Fulani elites using Tinubu's head to divide the south and Tinubu's lap dog replied without thinking twice.
