Hi folks, I don't even know how to post in nairaland again, but I need help. Am in Brisbane for short course program in course of travelling to central Australia for field work, I lost my Nigeria passport. I need help on how to leave the country peacefully, my Visa is still valid. Also all phone numbers to high commission office are linked to voice mail. I need direct phone number of any staff at Nigeria high commission office in Canberra. Thanks guys |

port1976: First, go to the nearest police station and report it. Get a report. Send email to the Nigeria embassy in Canberra to this address:. nhc.passport@gmail.com and you can copy this address too, nhcc.admin@foreignaffairs.gov.ng The Nigeria embassy in Canberra responds faster to emails than phone calls. You may call forever without a response. You can either do another passport or be issued a letter of authority to travel without a passport. Hello people, I got support from this thread when I was relocating to Australia and I felt its only right to drop my 2cents back plus I am less busy at work lol. okay so my family and I actually got the Canadian PR but I got a job offer here in Australia so we decided to come here first. Honestly we haven't decided if we will be staying in Aussie and converting to PR or go back to Canada after 2years before the Canadian PR expires but let us see how that goes. its important I state that I am a work visa holder not PR so a lot of the information/experience may be different for people with PR. So we got into Sydney in January. My initial perception from the airport was Australia is overrated, coming from Canada airport(Vancouver precisely) I was highly disappointed but that has changed though, Sydney is beautiful. They need to work on their airport though. Accommodation: Rent is Sydney is EXPENSIVE! no it is not exaggerated. I was provided temporary accommodation by my employer for just a week so I had literally days to get a place and with the info I got here I was made to believe it was impossible but apparently I serve a wonder working God lol. unlike Nigeria were you just see house pay and move in, here it is different. it is a whole process and I still can't believe we did it in 3 days. We started by checking out all the rental sites for apartments within our budget. We then booked viewings (which is compulsory btw before anyone rents a house to you). there were viewings we had to go to immediately same day. finally we found the one we wanted and then we sent in an application. The application forms is another story. At a point I though we were buying the property. it is the norm to enter lease agreements which usually span minimum 3months and maximum 12months. we signed a lease contract for just 6months because that was the least period the landlord was offering. you also provide referees, bank statement and they check you credit history to be sure you don't owe. lucky for me I reached out to HR at my office to stand in as my referee since I din's know anyone here. Sidenote: They are housing benefits for citizens/PR Holders where the govt subsidises rent if you income is less than a particular amount. We also had to explain the urgency of getting a place to housing agent and he saw our seriousness because we were ready to pay immediately. Long story short we viewed houses Wednesday/Thursday, saw the house we wanted on Thursday and notified the agent with our application on Thursday, signed contract and moved in on Friday. Cost of Living: I reckon food here is cheap, for a family of three we spend about A$200 on food every month and this includes baby food, ijekuje(sweet mouth) plus regular naija food (I found an African store ). Transportation is okay. I top-up my Opal card(which gives you access to trains and buses) with A$100 and this takes me for 2weeks to and fro work weekdays am not sure wheat its like if you have car (fuel cost/insurance and all that as I am not mobile). Bills on the average for us is approximately A$100 a month which includes electricity, gas, heating and internet (internet takes the largest chunk, without internet its a lot less). Healthcare: if on work visa you have to pay for your health insurance which is really expensive (one of the major cons of work visa). PR and citizens enjoy Medicare which is basically free health care. Tax is also quite high for work visa holders (32.5%) on every dollar you make. it is less for PR holders and citizens. The good thing also is that salary is paid biweekly as against monthly in Nigeria plus rent can be paid weekly, biweekly or monthly; you choose. In summary ill say, life here is expensive however, the salary here is high, there is no middle class here and the quality of life is next to none. In terms of moral, they are still sane compared to the far west so its definitely a good place to raise kids. in terms of diversity, they are still coming up, very view Africans here and so racism is still obvious. The weather is perfect!. If I remember any other info I'll be back to share. But seriously we need to connect with each other more considering how few we are here. Congrats on your job and move to Sydney. Nearly everything you said about Sydney is true re: the ugly airport, high salaries, exhorbitant rents, weather etc But please tell me where do shop for food that you spend $200 per month for family of 3? We're spending at least $400 per month on groceries only for a family of 2 minus my newborn baby that just joined us. Eating out is extra $$$..I don't think food is cheap here oo!!! Also where do you live that all your utility bills add up to $100 per month? My NBN home internet is $70 per month, gas is $185-$200 per quarter and electricity averages $200-$250 per quarter depending on the season. I reckon there's middle class here as most people are actually middle class, we have upper and lower middle class (I went for a walk this morning in my neighborhood and one of the streets seemed to be upper middle class residents cos the number of G Wagons I saw made me want to change my career  ) lol. Everyone pays the same amount of taxes based on your income except you're on a "Working Holiday Visa" which is granted to citizens of few countries. So the higher your income the higher your taxes for everyone PR, citizen or not.P.S I'm on mat leave and happy to connect with fellow Sydneysiders. 12 Likes |

Lol so we have some basic food items we brought from naija with us, food cost would probably go up once all that is finished but yea we averaged that in the past two months. My gas/heating bill for the last quarter was about $140 which is like $35 a month and electricity was $130 for the last quarter so abit above $100 a month. Internet is $60. We are very conservative with our utilities thanks to the prepaid meter system we got used to in Nigeria(e.g lights stay off during the day, air conditioning at night time and all of that). extraterestrial , thanks for giving back to this thread. Such an exciting gist! The thread has been quite dull these days. Maybe that's because people are all busy, so to say, with one thing or the other. but irrespective of that, everyone who is already in Aussie needs to find out time to give back to the thread to keep it alive. The last time I checked the role calling list, I found not less than 50 persons that had migrated through this thread. People do come online but we hardly see new gists here, making the thread looks so quiet and dull. We need more gists like this. People need to share more experiences in a way of giving back to the thread for intending arrivals and for future PR applicants. In all, thanks for the exciting gist. paparazy06: Starting from the former part, see I am neither a legal representative nor I don't know your exact situation. But as of now, I would suggest, if you fulfill all the conditions and really want to be considered under this visa, you can give it a shot. Rest all depends upon the Australian immigration authorities weather they are ready to accept you under the said visa category or not. Coming to the latter part, there are many other ways to enter in Australia. All the ways will be subject to conditions fulfilled for the particular category. Need to know your exact situation in order to suggest you something relevant. All the best for the same. |

Please for those of you who has passed the hurdle and successfuly settled in Aussie I please will like you to help me on the best and cheapest means of sending money to Ausiee account from Naija here to pay for visa fee of family of three. Help me please. I had applied for 190 visa January last year and the visa was refused. I lost all the money. I did EOI again and I was norminates again by NSW. Now I have another ITA. Hey guys, been a long time. I need your help to decode if this is legit or not. I understand this is not supposed to be here. Just asking because of the proximity and to get other views. A friend sent these documents to me, from what it seems his younger brother is supposed to go to Vanuatu for a cooking course, and they were issued this travel document. I have asked him what are there expectations from this trip but have not gotten any feedback, since it is still early hours in Nigeria. I am trying to decode how genuine this is. 1 Share
