Its the same thing in Nigeria, housing is way cheaper in Ondo than in Lagos but your job prospects are way higher in Lagos.

We had just been told we were making our descent to Frankurt and that the weather was -2 degrees. I immediately grabbed my socks and jacket and got ready. I kept imagining what the weather would feel like while also imagining how the guy beside me was able to masticate all the grass that was served during the flight. The landing was smooth and I disembarked the aircraft at exactly 6.20am. It was quite cold but I expected worse. The shuttle bus immediately took us to the arrival hall.

As we entered the hall, I noticed everyone approach a lady standing at the corner with a long sheet of paper, I followed even though I didn't know why. The guy before me told her he had a special need, she quickly provided a wheel chair and showed him his security clearance gate. I was also shown my clearance gate. So it was good I followed..Lol.

Security checks were concluded and I proceeded to the departure lounge close to my boarding gate to wait out my 7.30hours layover. I had bought a sachet tooth paste in Nigeria and had it docked in my jacket so I went to the bathroom.......
A few hours later, hunger begin ginger, I thought of enduring it because I didn't know if I could make payments with my master debit card but when it was clear I was going to pass out, I went to the food court to look at what they had on display.

I didn't understand some of the things I saw, so to be safe and not end my flight to Toronto in the lavatory, I decided to settle for a bottle of coke and 2 cup cakes(wrong move). As he started punching the amounts on the cash register, I had panic attacks when I saw the total bill stand at 10euros and a fraction. It turned out to be the most expensive bottle of coke and cup cakes I had had in my whole existence as stanbic happily sent a debit alert of 4,680. I paid and angrily left.

At the international airport in Lagos, screening was pretty much straigh forward, my checked in bag weighed 20kg so no English was spoken. Boarding pass issued alongside declaration cards.
I filled and submitted declaration cards to a cheerful lady.
Going through the final check just before proceeding to the departure lounge, the lady asked for my international passport and on sighting the visa category, smiled and said congratulations, I smiled in equal measure and said thank you.

The flight from frankfurt to Toronto was announced and I proceeded to the boarding gate, the lady at the desk asked how I got the visa and the program I applied for. The flight was smooth but just too long. I slept, saw movies. Food kept coming and I continually ignored them after opening the pack. I requested for tea at some point expecting Milo and milk...Lol. na herb tea dem give me drink.

I found something amazing on the Lufthansa flight(don't know if it's the same with other airlines)...the screen has a clock that winds down so you know how much time is left before landing. At exactly 0.00, the plan is on the ground. Anyways, we landed at Pearson at 16.05pm. After the first clearance, presentation and stamping of declaration cards, I was shown to immigration.

The queue at this point wasn't so much but I was on the queue for over 2hours.There were only 2 officials attending to us with the other work stations empty. A lady on the queue fainted after sometime. A couple(both doctors and new immigrants) immediately rushed and started revival procedures. Shortly after, the EMS showed up.

When it was my turn, I presented declaration cards, COPR, passport and I was asked to take a sit. Minutes later, I was called and asked to sign my copy of the COPR after asking if I had been convicted or had other dependents. She now said " you became a permanent resident on 25th Feb 2019" and advised I register for my SIN. That was also concluded at about 8pm.

All the while my friends were waiting for me. I met up with them and immediately I left the airport....the collllllllllllld that greeted me..... I think it was -13 degrees that day. Nobody could explain to me why the cold had cameroun pepper mixed with it. Lol.

We got home and I binged on the jollof rice and barbecue chicken that was kept for me while still bearing in mind I had the last leg of my flight to Halifax the next day.

My flight to Halifax was for 14.55pm. My friend dropped me off at 1pm. I got boarding pass and was chilling at the departure lounge with the Wifi until I heard my surname pronounced in a funny manner. I didnt know that announcement for boarding had long been made and we were 2 left to board. I quickly boarded and not long after, we took off.

We landed Halifax at 6pm, I picked up my bag and went to the currency exchange booth to get some CAD.
Having no friend or family here, I got an airport taxi to take me to my airbnb apartment as my host was already waiting. I was charged 74CAD for a short distance oh. My host showed me to the room and other facilities. The sleep that night was awesome but interestingly, I woke up at 6am Nigerian time.

It's not easy being here without a friend or family as you have to figure out everything yourself but it's been an interesting learning process. I don tire to type, na phone I dey use. More gist coming soon.

My question: is/are there any legal implication if she decides to back out of the new offer, even though she already signed and submitted an offer letter. She is thinking of consulting a lawyer.

i dont knownmuch about micro, but a good place to start of will be alberta occ info. Also checking out on google bridging programs in alberta for microbiologists.

I am not a lawyer, but just like @TheCongo2 said, there is no legal implication to back out after accepting an offer. I have done so more than twice in the past in this Canada. However, my reason for backing out was not because I accepted counter offer from my then current employer but because I got multiple offers at the same time and the one I wanted the most came last.

Just like you as an employee can back out after accepting an offer without any legal implications, so also can the employer withdraw an offer, for virtually any reason, after you have accepted it but before you start the job. The only reason they can not give to withdraw the job offer is for discriminatory reasons (e.g. gender, religion, race, age etc). However, no employer that is worth it salt will withdraw an offer for any reason except they are closing down. The reason for this is not far fetched. It does not speak well of them as words travel fast and nobody will want to work for such employer.

Having said all of this and by virtual of my experience as a hiring manager, I will strongly suggest that your family member do not accept the current employer's counter offer. It never ends well most of the time (I will say 75% of the time). If the current employer values your family member they would have done the right thing without an offer from another employer. Any person in the know of how employers think when you tell them you are leaving them will never advice you to accept a counter offer from your current employer. Please note, this is by no means a rule not to accept counter offer but just a suggestion based on what I know and I have seen happened numerous time few months after counter offers are accepted. Your family member may however be one of the few exceptions that did not get burnt after accepting counter offer from current employer. Just take this into consideration before declining the current offer and accepting the counter offer.

And by the way, what your family member should have done was that before letting the current employer know about the new offer, she should have talked to the current employer about her concerns and what she expected them to do about it. If they agree to do and do what she wants, then she says. Otherwise, she quits. But it is late now to adopt this strategy.

Whatever she eventually decides to do, I wish her good luck and all the best!

Gonna be a web app involving HTML CSS JavaScript and Java Spring framework(altho open to alternatives( using a noSQL Database. Let me know what you guys think

Alright Ive thought of a good first project . A while ago I had to develop a simple plagiarism detector. It compares two (text) files and computes a similarity percentage. This was all done in Plain Java now I want us to create a web application with a front end where users can upload two text files themselves and the app generates the plagiarism score.

While I work on creating our environment , feel free to take a look at the code and let me know if you have any questions e.g how the code works , choice of data structures etc.. I've tried to ensure the code is optimal from an algorithmic POV but of course suggestions to improve are welcome( I believe one way would be to use some ML to ensure better results but I think for our purpose this works) .

NOTE : there are some simple text files and synonym file which I used as a test , feel free to update the synonyms file with more content and try out different text files. Again let me know if you find any bugs.

There is a list of things I need to do to get us started ;
Create an architecture diagram for the app
Planning on hosting the code that computes the plagiarism score on an AWS lambda
Host the front facing web app on AWS
Set up a public repo where the project will be hosted and add Continuous Integration , Code quality check e.t.c
Set up an Agile board where we can track progress

Once all this is done , we'll divide what needs to be done based on areas of interest and pick our tech stack . Theres gonna be a lot of relatively simple front end stuff e.g home page, result page , error page so lots of learning opportunity. Theres also gonna be back end work to process the uploaded files.

Not sure when Ill be done my part as Ill mostly only be working on it weekends but Ill let you guys know when that is .

Please kindly share so we can all learn. A friend recently accepted a counter offer and a promise of promotion and shortly after the environment became passively hostile. The promotion did not come at the end of the year as promised. The person was lucky to get another offer soon after and left.

That's too bad. It would have been a great opportunity to meet the man, the myth, and the legend. I hope to get a ticket to one or two play-off games in April, I'll let you know in case you are still interested.
