Here in SA we have 9 tribes, "Blacks". But we also have South African born Indians, classed as just "Indians". Then there's the "Whites", who're all different in their own right since there's the English, Dutch, French etc. Lastly we have the "Coloureds"/Biracial people & a smaller group Chinese.

East Africa is more complex than I thought. My mind is doing cartwheels trying to understand these different terms. Because here it's much simpler, you're either black or you're not.

It's just like the way the coastal Bantus came from Southern Somalia in a place known as Shungwaya before they found themselves at the Kenyan coast! African tribes were always in migration. The Senegalese Wolof tribe originated from Sudan. Akon and Sadio Mane would fit in South Sudan and Sudan pretty well judging them by their looks.

True - people were always moving because there weren't really any strong kingdoms or empires with boundaries like now - nearly every african is a mix of many tribes.

So true...khoisan existence in Kenya is undeniable even though they dont exist anymore...The Dorobos an Okiek are around though..

No one is a pure breed. The Mandingo and Wolof are more closely related to Luos of Kenya than Hausas. They both share the same origin - Kemet or the large Nubian Sudan Kingdom. The Pokomos are caught up between coastal Bantus and the Oromos(Cushites). It's pretty hard grouping them!

Ghana had over 100 ethic groups in 1960 after a national report buh it has declined totally and majority of them have now lost most of their traces and ethnic groups through urbanization and serious migration.You see people crossing and inter relating to other ethnic groups for over 5 decades that their grand children and offsprings loose their original ethnic group trace.Now it has diminished to just 5 ethic groups who make up over 95% of the country.The largest ethnic group known as the Akans who belongs to the Kwa group relating to Congo now make up 47% of Ghana

Kenya has about 70 tribes according to a certain report. In this report are tribes which are yet to be formally recognised and these tribes normally have about 500-50,000 members as their population. These little tribes get gobbled up by the much established bigger tribes and eventually their languages and cultures die.
