Princedapace: Gaddafi had 40 years to turn his country into a Dubai or a Singapore and he blew it! If he brought prosperity to his people, how would they have toppled him. Why weren't the rich monarchies of the Middle East toppled? Because they brought prosperity to their people and also the monarchies bribe the citizenry with generous entitlements. Instead of Gaddafi to apply free market economic policies or even pro-business, he preferred socialistic policies that held the country back 2 Likes 1 Share |

urahara: Don't look down on Africa neither must you be taken away by the Maghreb The Maghreb though richer per capita than most African countries isn't that rich. Algerias per capita is only $4,400 which is only doubles Nigeria's. You have a few performers in the Maghreb in terms of economic reforms that have the capacity to become rich one day like Morroco and Tunisia. I'll be honest with you, only Morocco for now makes the cut based on economic policies. Many African countries aren't doing too badly. Look at Rwanda. Botswana is a higher middle income country and one day may join the rich world. You have Ivoru Coast and Ethiopia which are both growing fast. Ghana isn't disappointing. Zambia is trying and can do better. When I was in secondary, I was mesmerized by Sudan due to the stories a senior of mine used to tell when he was in that country. His dad was a diplomat. As I grew up and read more , I realised things aren't as sunny as they look. If Nigeria had been growing at an 8% rate rather than the 6% from 1999- 2013 and extended such grow rate till 2018, Nigeria's per capita would have been around $5,000, which is higher than the $4,400 of Algeria today Algeria scores 156th in Ease of Doing business. Economic reforms will be hard in this country as there are lot of subsidies and the populace will fight tooth and nail to hold on to their spoils 3 Likes |

grandstar: Botswana can't hold a candle to the maghreb. It's gini coefficient is extraordinary , the third highest in the world , despite the fact that there is low corruption in Botswana and there is good governance. It's extraordinary gini coefficient has made mince meat of it's high per capita. Most of the Botswana people are subsistence farmers !!!!! 16 percent of Botswana are in extreme poverty. Extreme poverty that in the middle East and Africa has been eradicated to 0.6 to 0 percent. Despite a high per capita that should make it at worse like Russia. |

Ugosample: The schism between the Hutus and Tutsis must be observed through the eyes of their Belgium colonisers. In Belgium, they have 2 ethnic groups: the French Walloon and Dutch Fleming. The French Walloon who make up 40% long dominated the country politically and treated the Fleming's who make the remainder 60% like 2nd class citizens During World War 1 for instance, many Fleming soldiers died because they did not understand the orders of their Walloon superiors. It was this policy they brought to Rwanda and Burundi was genocidal consequences. 1 Like |

urahara:Actually, you can blame it on colonisation. Algeria was run as part of France for over 130 years, with more than 1 million French settlers by the 1960s. It therefore received a far greater amount of investment than any of France’s sub-Saharan colonies ever did. Given such facts, the true wonder is that Algeria is now only barely better off than Nigeria, a testament to just how badly the Algerians ran their country after getting independence. You need to stop rushing to blame “the black man” for any and every shortcoming you see in Africa today, as a little historical knowledge will make clear that there is absolutely no type of dysfunction on the continent which hasn’t been seen elsewhere in the world, even in Europe as late as the 19th century. A lot of Africa’s problems really can be laid at the door of the European colonisers, even if such whining does get tiresome to hear at times: all the European powers deliberately set out to keep their black subjects under-educated and divided, as they knew their rule had no hope of lasting otherwise: this isn’t mere conspiracy theorising on my part, but well documented in official papers of the European rulers themselves. It is therefore no surprise that the divisions and under-investment in human capital during the colonial era have continued to have terrible consequences in the form of incompetent, kleptomaniac rule by buffoons supported by masses of tribalistic semi-literates and outright illiterates. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Re: Welcome To Algeria ! ( Pics ) by omohayek: 8:05am On Mar 18, 2019 |
urahara:For the exact same reason why millions of indigent Nigerians flock to Lagos, despite other Nigerians routinely calling it a "slum": the places they are coming from are even poorer. Besides, Algeria also happens to be right on the Mediterranean coastline, making it an ideal place from which to try to reach Europe, the dream target of not just sub-Saharan Africans but poorer Algerians as well. For every Nigerian who migrates to a place like Algeria, there are probably 100 who do the same within Nigeria who you don't notice, simply because you take it for granted that such migration is permissible. Lagos wouldn't have such huge problems with slums and perpetual traffic-jams if indigent people from everywhere else in the country weren't continuously moving there and overwhelming any new infrastructure the city builds. 3 Likes 1 Share |

omohayek: MOST OF AFRICA'S PROBLEM IS THE FAULT OF THE BLACK MAN. I do not deceive myself. And yes, I know the history you can continue to blame the colonialists but hey, the inclination of black man is destructive (we seethat everyday) What we should talk about now is how to reverse our self destructive tendencies and move forward And Algeria is FAR ahead of Nigeria in everything good The infrastructure is far better etc A trip to Tunis will also show you how far behind Sub Saharan African countries are (most) 1 Like |

Ugosample:You clearly have no interest in learning any historical facts that might interfere with your self-loathing tendencies. What part of "Algeria was ruled for over 130 years as an integral part of France itself" don't you understand? And had you bothered to educate yourself in the slightest, you would have known that Tunisia and Morocco also benefited from such deep close links with the European states in a way no black colonies ever did, but why let such glaring facts of history get in the way of your self-hatred? In any case, any city can be made to look good under an authoritarian regime that can force poor people out of sight: that's why Pyongyang manages to present a good face to impressionable people like yourself, who are easily taken in by a few shiny buildings. If Lagos could do what the Chinese have done (and the white South Africans used to do), by expelling anyone without official residence permits, it too would look like an oasis of near-First World conditions, but I don't doubt you'd still be on here whining about how this too is evidence of the allegedly inherently faulty nature of "THE BLACK MAN". There's just no winning with people who are cursed with deep racial self-hatred. 6 Likes 1 Share |

omohayek: One reason China's cities look nice maybe due to the household registration policy that only allows a person to have access to social services only from his province. So if I leave Ondo state for instance and bring my family and kids to Lagos, my kids cannot take advantage of public education provided by Lagos State Many parents are forced to leave their kids back in the provinces and come to prosperous coastal cities like Shanghai and Beijing to work. I suspect it must have slowed the influx of migrants into cities and prevented the overwhelming of social services and infrastructure. I don't like the policy as it discriminatory and makes those from the poorer provinces "second class" in their own country. Also we have the "left behind children" which I'm sure you've heard of. 7 Likes 2 Shares |

omohayek: There was this British Jew who was sent to the Gold Coast to head the country. He earnestly started engaging in development works and before you could say Jack Robinson, he was recalled. You can't slave for two masters. You can't colonize a place and at the same time empower them with knowledge and wealth that would unchain them. It is sad. Hong Kong was quite fortunate. It was a Scottish governor that brought in the reforms that made this place a capitalist Haven. It shows what could have happened if the Brits had just tried harder. Hong Kong fascinates me. 3 Likes 1 Share |

omohayek: it's not issue of self hatred it's the FACT! Let me ask you a simple question How many African countries have you been to? How msny African diplomats have you met? How many African companies have you seen being run? Yes I know that France occupied Algeria for a long time, and even the crisis that followed, but I'm more familiar with Tunisia tho I used to think like you until I started going out and interacting with and doing business across Africa His inclination as black man is his biggest Achilles heel, take that from me. And it's not due to the fact that he is genetically wired to b like that, he decided to be like that BY CHOICE look at The fvckery going on in that zoo called Nigeria and Lagos especially look at the fvckery in Cameroon (I was there and I was ashamed to be African) what of Freetown? The president before sold his country off to the Chinese in exchange for a pittance. You can continue continue foolibg yourself, but Africans like me who knows what s up know Black folks need to change |

omohayek: Forget shine shine Why can't Nigeria despite its wealth build a functional city.? it's not about sky scapers (how many sky crapees does London or Paris have?) But it's functionality See how disorganized our cities are...How hard can it be to build according to plan? or have a proper layout and you build whatever you want WITHIN the layout? Look at the poor waste management system in Lagos (everywhere filthy like as if Nigerians are black animals, even animals are even more neat that these fvckrrs) Throwing filth everywhere, etc What about open defecation. I was ashamed when I took my friend from Togo round Lagos, and while in the car, somewhere on Lagos island, we saw people squatting on the bridge and $hitting in the water What kind of animal behaviour IS that? Lagos and indeed other cities in SSA do not need shine shine, it's functionality Let the roads br good Let the drains work Let us stop shittin in public Efficient waste management Let the land lords maintain the buildings (let us have a standard and building code) and other basic stuff like fixing the fractured transport system you will see how nice Lagos will look look without even erecting fancy buildings like Dubai But with too many barbaric and archaic punks living in one space, I don't see that happening On a side note, do you know that in Tunis, it is enforced that every restaurant MUST HAVE running water and a proper toilet Every public facility must have same too They are implementing same in Rwanda But what what do we have in our $hithole country of origin Restaurant by the gutter, no running water and toilet This is just one example of many many other things that makes Nigeria Nigeria failed state (and most of SSA ) Travel more and travel around you will see what I'm saying I'm sure you do some travel. 1 Like |

grandstar:It's hard to argue for one's right to rule over another people by dint of "racial superiority" while said "inferior" people are surpassing one's own in learning under one's watch. If the British had gotten their way, the only schooling available to Africans would have been to the primary school level, and even that would have been restricted to the production of a few clerks and teaching the sons of a few "chiefs" just enough reading and writing to make them effective tools for "indirect rule". The annual intake of less than 100 students at King's College would have sufficed for all of Nigeria as far as the British colonial authorities were concerned. Only in the 1930s did the British even begin to start thinking seriously about university education in West Africa, and only in 1948 did they get around to actually doing something about it. Until then, every single Nigerian university graduate had to go abroad to get a degree, paid for entirely out-of-pocket - which is precisely what both Awolowo and Azikiwe did. Education in southern Nigeria expanded in the face of British official disinterest almost entirely through the initiatives of Nigerians themselves, who struck bargains with missionaries to "accept" Christianity only on the condition that the missionaries would build schools for their children. Our great-grandparents were astute enough to play the competing missionary groups off against each other, which was why primary schools exploded in number throughout the region, followed by missionary-run secondary schools, while the restriction on missionary activity in the north meant they had to do with the colonial status quo - the consequences of which we still see today in the north-to-south gradient in Common Entrance and JAMB scores. It's sad to see the beneficiaries of such sacrifice now blindly parroting racist nonsense about the supposedly evil nature of their own people, dishonoring the sweat and tears of their own forebears. 4 Likes 1 Share |
