Nigeria U23s Probable Line-Up Vs Libya : Nwakali, Chukwueze, Dennis In Line For Full Debut; Awoniyi Striker
Nigeria U23 team will be up against Libya in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Wednesday, March 20.

Coach Imama Amapakabo is presently with his boys in Tunis - the venue of the match - and he is expected to keep a close watch on the players in camp to know who will be in his starting XI for the game.

Allnigeriasoccer.com has come up with the coach's probable line-up for the important away game.

Goalkeeper

U20 goaltender Olawale Oremade, who helped the Flying Eagles to a fourth-place finish at this year's Afcon U20 tournament in Niger, is in line to make his debut appearance with the Olympic team.

Defenders

Imama's usual and trusted defenders, including John Lazarus and Ebube Duru, are likely to be in the starting XI. Joshua Akpudje and Adebayo Ojo will complete the team's defensive unit.

Midfielders

Azubuike Okehukwu, who was the team captain during Samson Siasia's reign, is set to start at the middle of the pitch.

He will feature alongside Arsenal loanee Kelechi Nwakali, who will be the team's playmaker as result of his obvious creativity.

Bologna youngster Kingsley Michael could get the nod to start ahead of home-based Fatai Gbadamosi to complete a three-man midfield formation.

Attackers

This is one area where Amapakabo will need to consult his backroom staff before unveiling his attacking line-up.

Nonetheless, we tipped Villarreal teen sensation Samuel Chukwueze to start at the right wing.

Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi is likely to feature as the team's hitman while Club Brugge winger Dennis Bonaventure will be at the left flank.

Summary of Coach Imama Amapakabo's probable line-up against Libya (4-3-3 formation) :

Oremade ; Akpudje (CB) , Ojo (CB) , Lazarus (RB) , Duru (LB) ; Okechukwu (DM), Michael (DM), Nwakali (AM); Chukwueze (RW), Awoniyi (ST), Bonaventure (LW).

Why is Samuel Chukwueze still playing for the cadet team? The dude belongs in the Super Eagles already!

And by the way, is Azubuike Okechukwu still under 23? He too belongs in the Super Eagles team. Those two guys can walk into the starting 11 of the current SE team.

If he's still the same Azubuike that I saw in Brazil, then I'd tip him to anchor the DM with Ndidi. He's good enough to bench everyone else in that position, including Onazi. Unfortunately, I am not sure whether he has lost form since I don't have access to his league games.

Lacazzette has 4goals & 3assists in his last 10games (9starts & 1sub).

He is given more opportunities in the Europa league & he is utilizing it well.

Over the past two seasons, Lacazette might have been better but at the moment both are performing. The Coach obviously has his pattern which suits giroud (his aerial prowess maybe).

IMHO, anyone who has become a regular in the senior team should quit the cadet teams unless we wanna use them for the Olympic games proper.

Yup. I think they should be drafted into the senior team right away. Those guys are already playing close to their peak and if we allow them to keep wasting away in the cadet teams, by the time they graduate it would be downhill for them soon afterwards ... and we'll keep starting them based on reputations alone.

I think we should advise folks like Musa, Mikel, Ighalo, Onazi, etc to retire in peace.

That is why I love this seemless synergy between the U23 and SE coaches. Rohr wants to use that game to assess who and who are really ready for the next level.

This is a good development and should be sustained. We should have a standing U23 team. Even if there are no Olympics qualfiers we can organize quality friendlies for them.

Any young player promoted to the Super Eagles should have been tested and assessed by the U23 handlers.

I disagree with that approach it doesn't pursue merit as the overriding measurement for inclusion, it is way too NARROW. And unfortunately open too abuse, the story of Salisu is still fresh in many minds. In a country with high standards of probity and integrity this may be a good approach, however in Nigeria it will be fraught with problems.

It's what you do in your club and league week in and week out in terms of consistent continous top class outstanding performances that determines your quality not what you do in a training session or game for the U23.

Most top level teams will have players at U23 level who would have had at least 5/6 years of first team football. You will not see any academy players or B players in the U21 or U23.

Using that yardstick how many of our players in the U23 selection have had up to 3 years of first team continous consistent football ❓

Finally, with regards to Nigerian origin players who have already played for thier countries of abode or birth at U21 level will therefore be ineligible to play. That effectively excludes a huge ever growing quality pool of true youthful football talent.

I agreed with everything you said except the part about kicking out the veterans (except onazi). Most of the guys you mentioned are in their mid-to-late 20s at most early 30s. They still have alot to offer. We could easily merge the young talent with the experience, we don't have to abruptly kick out the vets.

I think we give these guys too much credit based on their past glories. I mean, somebody like Ighalo or Musa can have a fantastic game every now and then but the point is, as they age, those stellar games becomes rare and far between. I don't agree much with Pa Oni but I do agree with him that: at a stage, "if you refuse to leave football, football would leave you" grin

Forget their football age and take a look at where they play:
Mikel - from Chelsea to China, and now to the championship
Ighalo - from Watford to China
Musa - from Russia to Saudi Arabia

Trust me, you're are as good as the league/competition you play in grin

We have many more u23 players and other national fringe players whom we should give more chance to prove to us at this level. .. Remember we can take 3 over age players to the olympic as well..

Stephen Odey u23
Musa Yahaya not sure his age if he his eligible
Musa Muhammed not sure about his age
Al Hassan ibrahim should be eligible..

Defensively we need to sure things at the back i would recommend

Stephen Eze (Lokomotiv Plodiv) as one of the over age players that should be considered...

What about Chidebere Nwakali is he too old to play this competition... Perharps Victor Oshimhen and henry onyekuru could join later before the tournament if need be.
