Nigeria To Host Middle East Africa Rugby Championship by Nobody: 2:13pm On Mar 24, 2019 |
Nigeria has been chosen to host the second Middle East Africa Rugby League Championship, which will take place over a week in October and is likely to comprise of two groups and a final, all at a single venue. It will be the second MEA Championship to be played in Africa, the first in 2015 as part of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup Qualifiers, when Lebanon travelled to and defeated South Africa over two matches. “I'm certain the expanded competition will be a success in Nigeria and would like the Nigerian people to get behind us and show how great the country and Africa can be for the sport,” said former professional Ade Adebisi, vice chairman and general manager of the Nigeria Rugby League Association. “This tournament will be a fantastic avenue to showcase the raw talent in Africa and the Middle East and what rugby league has to offer outside of traditional boundaries.” It is also planned to host a regional educational event for coaches and match officials around the Championship. The decision to hold the tournament in Nigeria has been endorsed by Rugby Football League Hall of Famer Martin Offiah. “Of Nigerian heritage, I am always delighted when I see fellow countrymen express their athletic prowess. It makes me very proud that my parents came from a small village in the state of Onitsha and now a statue of their son sits outside Wembley Stadium in London thanks to this great sport. It is my honour to support the NRLA on their journey into the world of international rugby league.” Participating nations will be announced in March. Bobinovic:I decided to reply you on this thread instead. This is our Rugby team hosting the Rugby MEA championship and the African silver cup. So the rugby team is global. Buh as for golf, it's individual game. You can become a golfer and register for any competition in the world following the stages. Just like i made mention earlier on the other thread, there were many SA polo clubs that participated in the last Ibadan polo competition that i witnessed. Both sports seems not to be national thingy buh rather individuals. Same with MotoGp and F1 i guess. 1 Like |

Dave0116: It is a team sport like football, only you use your hands as well as the legs. There are several variants...but for ease of explanation There are two teams, each of 15 players each The goal of each team is to get the ball to the endzone...the line of the opposing team. Once they put the ball over the opponent's line...they score a try. Each try is worth 5 points, with an extra point added if a try is converted...ie a designated player kicks the ball over the goal post. If we get serious about this sport Nigeria would excel because this is a sport that deals with brute strength and speed both of which we have in abundance here. And to make it more interesting all you need to play is a ball. It isn't capital intensive like other sports. They need to make this sports popular in the next few years we would excel in it... 3 Likes |

Which city will host this? Which stadium? It's one thing to show interest. Competence is another story altogether. I hope this one will not go the way of the African Athletics Championships. |

Nigeria should pick a format and stick with it. I once saw the Nigeria 7s side play at a semi-pro tournament in Surrey a few years ago, and I believe they had their asses kicked by the Samurai team. Shocking. League is less lucrative than union. 7s less lucrative than the other two. If the Nigerian game is to grow in anyway, shape or form, we have to avoid fragmenting the almost non-existent grassroots by dabbling in these multiple formats. Pick union, and channel what little resources we have into that, and go from there. 1 Like |
