Sounds like good advice. As a general rule othopaedic specialists prefer to delay joint replacement until later in life I.e 60s and 70s in 1st world countries, possibly 50s in Nigeria (due to the difference in life expectancy).

This is because the replacements have a life span and they would not want to have to replace the replacements down the line.

So for moderate arthritis or for arthritis not involving the whole joint they initially go for minimally invasive procedures like arthroscopic washouts and your resurfacing ( which is partial joint replacement).

So depending on the level and type of arthritis the resurfacing might give good benefits without being as stressful a procedure as a total joint replacement.

But finally your uncle should sit down and discuss all aspects with the surgeon before agreeing to it.
And if he is still in doubt he can seek a second opinion from another specialist.
The final choice should be made by him (your uncle).
