An “unsolicited job application” is when a job seeker sends an email to express interest in working for a company when no vacancy has been posted. Here are 8 tips on how to approach a potential employer when you're not sure if a vacancy exists (including email template). Remember, many jobs never get advertised and sometimes a job doesn't exist until the right person comes along! 1. Don't wait for vacancies. It may feel intrusive but sending a “cold email” (email equivalent of a cold call) is a great way to approach a potential employer. 2. Research who to cold email. Be resourceful about finding hiring managers or decision makers emails through LinkedIn, networks, company websites etc. An email has a higher chance of being read if it is addressed to a particular person rather than a generic to ‘Dear Sir/Madam’. 3. Avoid social media. Do not contact hiring managers on Facebook, SMS, Whatsapp or cell phone. Email is most appropriate for cold applications. 4. Be personal. Do some research on the hiring manager or person you are emailing. Try to find some commonality to draw their attention e.g. “I read your article in HR Matters last month”. 5. Be brief and to the point. Provide a short profile of yourself in the body of the email – about 250 words. Attach ONLY your CV, do not bombard them with all your documents until asked. 6. Impactful subject line. Your subject line in a cold email should make the hiring manager want to open the email e.g. Sales Manager with 12 Years Retail experience. 7. Always suggest next steps. End your email with a call to action e.g. “Kindly let me know if we can have an exploratory interview to discuss further”. 8. Avoid nagging. Don't follow up more than twice.
