what are the prons and cons of connecting a stabilizer to a generator power supply?
Re: Generator And Stabilizer by Savotech: 10:35pm On Mar 22, 2015
Hmmm... I used to hear people say that also, back in those days when i bought gen in school and lowered the voltage and then i used stabilizer for equipments that needs normal 220v, my friends would tell me that the generator will spoil...

To my understanding,
The advantage of using stab is that you will get a stable ouput even if the generator output is fluctuating. You will protect your equipment when using "i better pass my neighbor" that has no AVR which gives high no-load voltage. But have it at the back of your mind that the stabilizer too is a load which will get its own power first and also get the power which it will supply the load connected to it.

The stab doesnt have any effect on gen, its just a load like any other device. The reason why the technicians discourage people from using stab is that the illiterate user might think that using stab will make a small gen power ok 800watts power a 2kw device.

In conclusion, using a stab doesnt have any side effect. I use 2 stabilizer at home for equipment when using phcn and i don't bother to bypass when using gen, and my generator hasn't spoil for 2years and still counting.

This was quite helpful to me. Thanks.

Well, that happened in school. I finished school 2 years now. God has blessed our area, we have constant and clean power so i dont use a stab. And I also have a big gen.

Equipment like computer and laptop need flawless current to be operational. providing them electric source from the generator directly really can damage these devices. Also. the stabilizer just add more load to the generator so make sure you are putting a capable load on the genarator's capacity.

there is noting like big or small coil its all desame, the sellers use it to make money eg telling you big coin 10k small coil 9k just take small coil the big and small add no impact on generator they do same work. don't be deceived

I recommend you use a Voltage guard or Voltage optimizer with your Gen, Stabilizers will add more load to the generator.

All the responses above have not talked from the technical perspective, all these experiences do not hold water. somebody who studied elect elect should please give us insight

I like your view of the fact that we could be sharing false experience.

The summary of the technical perspective is this.
1. In a transformer Input power= output power + losses. So powering your stabilizer without any load is as good as not plugging anything yet, if we should neglet the losees. So if you plug only your phone, the stabilizer only draw a little power your phone needs. To verify that, take your ampsmeter and check your stab input current on noload and when on load. At no load, you will get almost 0Amps.

2. Resistive load like heaters different from inductive load like stabilizer. When you plug an inductive load In ac circuit, it generates a magnetic flux, if the magnetic flux has no where to go to be converted, it returns back to the coil that generates it and produce a back emf which is almost equal to one to be generated in the next AC cycle. Which makes the coil not to draw any current in the next cycle. Only when u plug a inductive load to a DC circuit it will turn the coil to a magnet and decipate heat as a resistive load.

3. if your gen can power your blender, fridge, fan etc, why not a transformer which is the major component of your stab. Since both are inductive load. So taking a stab as a device on it own can be powered by any gen. Even a 1kva gen van power a 5kva stab, provided u do not plug a load more than 1kva to the stab.

4. Your mikano 100kva gen is a generator just like your 1kva tiger gen. So the difference is just the power. even egbin thermal station or kanji dam Which is the source of our so called nepa light still use generator. Just that it uses a turbine as the prime mover.

And in conclusion. Experience is sometimes worth more than 1000 theories because those theories too are propounded by experiments.

I hope i made a little sense. If you still have more question, dont hesitate to ask.

It is best to use gen protection or optimizer.

I hv been using stab with tiger gen since 2007,it will protect ur electronic during when ur power source (nepa or gen) high or low

I used to have this erroneous view as well about stabilizers affecting generators and the experience became costly for me as the irregularity of my once former gen caused my TV a great damage. Now I was almost towing that part with my new Tv However, I now only use my big diesel gen to power my entire house while the small gen only at night to power strictly fans and lights.

Furthermore, I discovered that using Stabilizer does not in anyway directly affect the gen unless the load connected supersedes the capacity of the generator. But the only contrary view to this is the use of my UPS. I think UPS does directly affect small generators. UPS may trip off occasionally or irregularly draw power from the gen thereby making the gen go off or causing disruptions to its operation. These were all my observations

Well said.
The UPS you talked about, there is an automatic transfer switch inside which change over the load from battery back-up to direct input. If the load can be powered by the gen conviniently without the UPS, i see no theoretical reason why the load cant be powered by the UPS connected to the gen.

Nevertheless, there are some sensitive UPS that switch to back-up when the input power is not clean. Those ones could switch from bypass to backup from time to time causing a small gen without good regulator to behave abruptly.

Interesting, can't believe am just seeing this in 2019.

Presently in te same situation i intend to buy a SERVO stabilizer, like 5KVA to power my entire house. I don't to do unnecessary manupalation of the wiring system because of the way my rented aparted wiring is configured. It makes the installation easier if the stabilizer will not have any effect on my petrom generator (2.kKVA and 1.2KVA)

will need to get a meter to know how much load the Servo stabilizer will be drawing itself.

@Savotech, i think i will need to contact you personnally, have a project on greenhouse automation, maybe you can help.

Concerning your servo stabilizer, the efficiency will determine. Like u said, u need a meter to check the no-load power consumption. A 75% efficiency, a 2.2kva gen should power your house with the 5kva stab.

With stabilizer you're safe but with Ups you're not safe embarassed

Savotech please I have a a question bothering me!

why is it that a small petrol generator set produces 220-240V same with a larger diesel engine, but it cannot Carry loads like the diesel engine?

This is a great thread that should be updated with experiences and current situation report. I am currently experiencing such fear and people are discouraging me from connecting my 3.5 Volts Generator to my 5KVA Stabiliser.

Generators are rated in power they can delivers, the kVA hv meaning which is the bulk load it can carries. there is no way you will compare the load carrying capacity of a 1.8kva generator to a 20kva Generator.

Savotech please I have a a question bothering me!

Sorry for late reply,

The reason is that not only the voltage determines the power but also the current it can deliver.
Small gen of 1000W can give about 4.5 amps
Big gen of 20000W or 20kw gives about 80amp

Electric cooker is about 2000w which draws about 9amps....
It needs 9amps, small gen can only supply 4.5a while big gen after supplying it 9amps still has 71amps for other load.

Or you can look at it this way.... A 10w led bulb uses the same 220v a pressing iron of 1000w uses. But the bulb can be powered convinienty even by a portable car inverter while the bulb cannot be powered by same. Reason being that the iron draws a lot of amps to produce 1000w of heat while the bulb draws lower amps to produce 10w of light. So that is the reason why a small gen cannot power heavy load.

No fear... Its ok for you to connect a 5kva stab to a 3.5 kva gen, only do not load your gen above 3kw. This is because the stabilizer has losses, so it would on its own use about 500w(could be much lesser this is worst cas scenerio).

Sure it can, since the "I better pass my neighbor" is rated 2500W, then you have no problem provided you do not go overboard
