As for Mata, i don't like him starting too. But i think he has been decent in this game. He's been running all over the place and giving the Watford defence things to think about.

Juan Mata hasn't been bad but a faster player will do more on the right.
The midfielders have been sub-par and it's the reason the effort of others have looked poor. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling did very good to keep that score goalless even though their positioning were all over the place.

Yes I agree, just like every manager, OGS is sentimental with his team selection but he needs to know when to send an underperforming player to the bench. Matic needs some bench time and maybe Herrera also.

Mata is making the center overcrowded while there’s a huge space on the right which makes Rashford to keep drifting wide and no one in the CF position. Lukaku needs to come on. Pogba can do whatever Mata is doing here.

The less said about Martial the better. He just too passive for my liking. If he continue like this, even with all his potential I won’t mind seeing him leave.

I am not sure u understand the technical part of football. Matic is the only holding midfielder we have. The last one was Michael Carrick. Although he is not playing to his best, but benching him would cost that midfield alot
