50 YEARS AGO..


Where it all began....





"YOU CAN'T HIDE FROM ME ALUZIYA... "LUDIBA SAID AS HE TIPTOED INTO THE UNKEPT HUT...
He scan his eyes around, there was nothing but grass and torn clothes in the hut.., he sigh when he realise his sister wasn't there...

He step outside and gaze at the sun.., he bug his Lips and look round the premises.., the trees, he felt his sister might be hiding behind one of those tall trees....

"Aluziya.. "He shouted but other than the echo of his voice..,nothing was heard nor seen..

He went forward barefooted....., it was tradition that until a boy turns 20, he isn't fit to wear shoes that was made of leaves and branches of trees...

Ludiba was 19, one more year and he will be confirmed into wearing shoes....

"Aluziya.. "He shouted again, this time more loud than before..

He was inclined to go back when he got no reply, maybe his sister didn't come this way...

He changed his mind when he said footsteps from nearby, it quickly occurred to him that his sister might be hiding behind one of those tall trees as he earlier thought...

With curiousness, he trot forward, his barefooted legs brushing the thick grasses that were turning into a wide range of bush..

"Aluziya, i can hear you..."He said walking more faster...
He grimace when he hit his leg against a stone.., he quickly lour down to look at his injured leg.., just then he saw something, a book, a book he has never seen before..., it was rough.., grasses littered all over it.., he pick it, he look at it wondering what it was or what it says.., he flip the pages... He scan the sides with his eyes..

"What is this..? He ask quietly..

He pick it up, look at the pages again, he wanted to drop it but then on second thought..., the book was something he hasn't seen before...

With inquisitiveness.., he pick it up and held it in his hands...

"Brother.. "

He quickly turn around and there she was.., his beloved younger sister... Aluziya....

"Where did you hide...? He asked

"I was in the hut..., i covered myself with those old rags.., i thought you would see me but you didn't.. I won.. "

He chuckle.. "No you didn't.. "

Aluziya gave him an eye shot.., then her eyes glance over to the book in his hands..."What's that in your hand..?

"Oh this..., i don't know, i found it here.. "

"Let me see.. "She said walking towards him..
Together, they opened the book..

"What does it say..? She ask curiously..

"I don't know, i don't understand the language.. "

"Do you think we should take it to grandfather.., he has lived longer than any of us.., he might know what this say... "

"Grandfather is sick..,he can't even look at his own self let alone this.. "

"Grandfather love this things.., besides am curious to know what is written in this big strange book.. "

Ludiba grunts..., he knew his sister will continue to insist... "Okay fine.. "

It wasn't long before they got home.., avoiding their parent, they went straight to where their grandfather was sitting...

"Grandfather... "Aluziya called out softly...

Azodukala the grandfather gently opened his eyes..

"Grandfather, we have something for you.."

Ludiba hesitated a bit before giving her the book... ,covering his nose because of the odour protruding from the grandfather's body... It was said that ogini struck the grandfather with that illness because he forgot to perform the ekusadu ritual of a newly born baby...

It was foretold that Azodukala couldn't sacrifice Aluziya.., because of this, the illness has been in his body.., no one dared to question the dark priestess of ogini...

Aluziya helped him up as he tried to stand up....

"What is it my child..? He ask dryly

Aluziya smiled,."We found something...."She said, slowly she placed the book in his hand..

As soon as the grandfather held the book, he felt something..., The dry scales growing in his skin began to pull off, he quickly received his strength as he was made whole...

Shocked.., he threw the book down..

"Grandfather.. "Aluziya muttered... "You're healed.. "

Shocked etched in Ludiba's face.., he stare at the book... "The book..., it healed you... "

"Priestess... "One of the low priestess shouted..

The dark priestess spun round to face her.....

"Something has happened... "The low priestess said..

The dark priestess quickly stood up and walked into the large shrine of ogini...

Fear gripped her when she saw blood flowing down from one of the scary skulls....

"Strange.. "She said picking up the skull... "This can only happen when a chain is broken..., someone has escaped ogini's wrath.... "

"Priestess, is that possible..?

The dark priestess gave her a deadly look... "Send a message to the king... Someone has broken loose..., i need to know who that person is and who set him free... Ogini must be appeased.., only then will there be peace..... ,ogini has shed blood.., blood must be given back.. "

THE STORY CONTINUES





STILL IN THEIR SHOCKED STATE,THE ENTIRE FAMILY STARE AT AZODUKALA, AZODUKALA was sitting on a mat made of animal skin though it was tattered, he was white as chalk. His eyes and mouth were frozen wide open in an expression of stunned surprise, and although he was staring straight at the rest of them, he appeared not to notice them at all.

Ludiba's face fell faster than a corpse in cement boots. In that instant his skin became greyed, his mouth hung with lips slightly parted and his eyes were as wide as they could stretch...,he still couldn't believe, was he dreaming...his grandfather who has been suffering from a grievous affliction has been healed and made whole..., his eyes glance at the book in his hand, his mouth shook as he tried to talk..

"No...!" Ugoloko, Ludiba and Aluziya's father voiced out from disbelief.., the gods must be playing pranks on him... "This isn't possible.. "He added, disbelief mounted in his face..

Ariya, Ludiba and Aluziya's mother quickly rushed and close the door made of woods and thick sticks of bamboos.., she knew for a fact all hell will break loose if a single neighbor is alerted...

Leapt in the air as if a firecracker had gone off, shrieked, wild eyed, bewildered, Azodukala stuck his face in an incredulous expression, unblinking stare, shaking head in disbelief, sent reeling backwards, brain desperately scrambling to make sense of it all, rendered speechless, temporarily incapacitated, stood as if paralysed from the neck up, gibbering nonsense, unable to comprehend what had just occurred...

"No... "Ugoloko boom out again... "This is unbelievable.., ogini...

"It wasn't ogini father.. "Aluziya cut in...,an ounce of fear stroked in her voice... "This book.. "She quickly turn to face Ludiba.. "Healed grandfather.. "

"No.. "Ariya shouted from behind them.., she quickly rushed to her daughter's side... "Never say such words.., ogini will not forgive you if you say this blasphemous words.. "

"But mother...

"Not another word.. "Ariya hollered shutting her up with fingers on her mouth... "Please Alu, not another word... "

"How is this possible..? Ugoloko asked still dumbfounded..

"The evil ones has been invited into our house.. "Ariya said fixating her gaze on the book... "We must destroy this book before it destroys us... "

"Mother no.. "Aluziya said... "If this book could heal grandfather, it can heal others.. "

"Your mother is right Alu.. "Ugoloko cut in... "You and your brother has brought this evil thing into this house.. "

"But father.., how is it evil..? Aluziya ask curiously..

"Alu... "Ariya called out with flaring nose... "You don't understand the ways and customs of our people.., this book must be destroyed before anyone finds out what it has done.."

"Grandfather has always said that whatever or whoever that does good is not evil.. "Aluziya countered... "Then why must this good thing been destroyed.. ?

"Listen to your mother Alu.."Ugoloko interjects.. "This book will bring nothing but destruction to us..., we must destroy it to avert our own destruction.. "

Aluziya knew for a fact her parent won't see reason with her, she trot towards Azodukala direction....
"Grandfather.. "She called out when she reached him... "Grandfather.., please tell them.., tell my parents that this good thing shouldn't be destroyed... "

Still engulfed with shock tinge with a great cloud of fear, Azodukala raise his head to meet hers...and focus his eyes on her...

"Grandfather.. "Aluziya called out again, this time tapping his arm.. "Please say something.. "

"There is nothing your grandfather can say Aluziya.. "Ugoloko said..."It was his cross to suffer that illness till he dies..., but after what happened today.., ogini wont take pity on him or any of us.. "

"Ogini struck him with this ailment.."Aluziya said back.. "Aren't we at least happy that grandfather has been brought back to his original self.., a strange book reverse ogini's hold on grandfather... "

"Alu... "Ariya shouted.. "Stop spurting nonsense from your mouth, ogini is all powerful, no other power is greater than ogini's.. "

"You're wrong mother... "Aluziya countered with all sense of boldness..."And even if that's the case, aren't we supposed to be happy that grandfather is made whole... "

"Your stubbornness will cost you your life and ours as well Aluziya.., stop this foolishness.. "

"Alu is right mother... "Ludiba muttered..

They quickly shift their gaze to him..

"What did you say...? Ugoloko ask drawing close to him..

Ludiba took a step backward with the book firmly held in his grip....

"I mean... "Ludiba muttered with shaking mouth... "I mean... "

"You mean what Ludiba..?Ugoloko retorted

Fear struck Ludiba that he almost lose his balance by his father's outburst...

"Just give me the book Ludiba.. "Ariya said... "It must be destroyed no matter what.. "

"No mother.. "Aluziya rotted out.. "I believe the gods have sent this precious gift to us... "

"The gods can never send such an evil thing to us.. "

"What if they did mother.. "Aluziya cut in... "The gods knows what is best for us, isn't it...?..,What if they've sent this book to us, to heal us of all our infirmities... "

"Stop saying such nonsense Aluziya... "Ugoloko hollered... "Only ogini has the power to heal us.. "

"I don't see it that way father..., a cruel god like ogini can never grant us such favours.. "Aluziya countered

"Alu... "Ugoloko yelled angrily... "You should know been the youngest child is not an excuse for stupidity and it certainly doesn't exclude you from ogini's wrath... "

"But father....

"Not another word from you... "Ugoloko retorted...

Fear engulfed Aluziya when she saw her father's eyes, never has she seem her father so angry, but why so angry over such a good thing...

"Ludiba.. "Ugoloko called out with a thunderous voice.... "Give me that evil thing you are holding.. "

Shivering Ludiba took more steps backward.., he knew his father, when he's angry, he tends to do something stupid and he also knew disobeying his father in such an angry state was a total bad idea...., But Aluziya is right, the book could do better things...

"Ludiba.... "Ugoloko blared out again..

"My son... "Azodukala finally spoke up in a dry voice..

Ugoloko quickly spun round to face him..

Azodukala cough, then he took a deep breathe.. "Let the boy be... "

"Father... "Ugoloko muttered shocked by his father's statement..

"Yes.. "Azodukala said in a husky crackling voice....."The book, it will bring good things to you.. "

"What are you saying father..? Ugoloko ask bewildered by his father's words... "How can this evil book bring good things to us.. "

"I.. I.. "Azodukala cough, he held his chest, with the help of Aluziya, he insufflate... "I don't know, but i know for sure it will bring good things to you and your children.."

"The only thing this book will bring is death.. "Ariya interjects... "Nothing but that.. "

"Ariya is right father, we cannot keep this book.., if the dark priestess comes to know for it, it will destroy us all.. "Ugoloko said

"Only time will tell what is right and what is wrong.."Azodukala said..

"It's obvious you're saying this because this strange book has cast a spell on you.. "Ariya said with all sense of seriousness..

Azodukala chuckle dryly... "Am too old to be bind by the works of a spell..., i have this great feeling that this book will being earnest wealth to you and my son and your children.. "

"Then your old age must be playing tricks on you father-in-law... "Ariya said... "Am not that old that i have forgotten what happens when you cross ogini, i cannot risk the lives of my children over the promises of a book whose prowess were made and uttered from the mouth of a just healed old man.. "

"Ariya... "Ugoloko retorted... "Mind the way you talk to my father... "

"My husband..., you aren't seeing this.., your father is under the influence of a spell.., we must do what is right, and destroying the book is the right thing... "

"Grandfather is under no spell mother... "Aluziya said softly... "I completely believe grandfather words.., i too have this strong feeling that this book will bring us great fortune.. "

"Shut up Alu...."Ariya retorted... "Just shut up your mouth..., you don't know anything, nothing at all... "She grunts and turn to face Ugoloko... "Have you even thought what people will say when they realise your father has been healed..., when people start asking questions, what do we tell them...?

"We tell them the truth.. "Aluziya replied shapily... "Grandfather always say that no matter how bitter the truth is, we should say it regardless of the consequences that follows.. "

"The consequences will be too big for us Aluziya..., don't you understand your mother's plight..., does no-one understand me...?

"You're getting worried for nothing Ariya... "Azodukala said... "What is bound to happen will surely happen but....

"And do you know what will happen in this situation...? Ariya cut in... "When the priestess eventually finds out that you've been healed.., it will be our heads on a pike... "

"Why mother...? Aluziya ask.. "Why such injustice,..?, what kind of a god will kill his folks because his folk was healed by a fellow contender... "

"ogini has no contender Aluziya... "Ariya said... "I have seem the end of this, the only thing that can save us is the destruction of this book... "

"I solely agree with you Ariya.. "Ugoloko said...

"Fear... "Azodukala said... "It even kills faster than any illness.. "

"No one is afraid father.. "Ariya said... "We're just doing what is best for all of us.., this is how we will survive..., the book must be destroyed... "

Ariya quickly spun round to face Ludiba but he wasn't there...
Shock races through her as she saw the open door...
"Ludiba... "She shouted...

Ugoloko clenched his fist.. "The book.., that stupid son of yours have ran away with it... "
