In March 2018, 44 African countries took perhaps the most significant step yet to advance a vision for greater intra-African trade by signing the Framework Agreement on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). By January 2019, that number had grown to 49 out of the 55 AU member states, of which 16 had completed steps to ratify the agreement. The ambitious project seeks to remove tariffs on 90% of the goods traded between the signatories to the agreement, and gradually eliminate other non-tariff barriers to trade in goods and services.

why does Nigeria not want to collaborate with other african countries and sign for free trade deal. Big countries like South Africa already signed.
Is Nigeria not interested to make a better africa?

Because if you sign it, China com set up a factory in Cameroon and flood Nigeria with Garri that we can produce here with 90% of tariffs cancelled.

These countries have cheap labor and a lower production cost while we are the largest market.

It is economic suicide

No, China is not part of Africa. even if china set up factories in cameroon. there is border between Nigeria and Cameroon, Nigeria has power to reject products from cameroon. free trade means that cameroon companies can come to Nigeria and operate freely.

No. If a Chinese company sets a company in Cameroon, the company becomes a cameroonian company.

A free trade agreement that removes 90% of the trade tarriff means you can move goods easily just like ECOWAS.

i must confess , refusing to sign that treaty is one of the most sensible actions of buhari. many of the countries that signed the treaty will pull out in about 5 years time .
you can only sign up to such treaty when you know you are producing more than enough and at a profitable cost , but when your local production level is low then it is senseless opening ur economy to free trade most especially when you are the biggest market and population in that region

I think you guys you are missing a point. Free trade deal means cameroon company can open branch in Nigeria without tariffs and employ good Nigerians. Cameroon company will be able to see products to Nigerians without tax, but only if Nigeria require such items. Nigeria has a power to say we don't want this items in our country.

No, Buhari made a bad decision. you must believe that Nigerian companies will go out and conquer all their competitors. South Africa will not allow chnise companies to operate in the free trade deal. Believe South Africa has good plans to manage this free trade deal.

It was not a good decision. Nigeria needs to believe that Nigerian companies can compete with other international comapanies.

Mr rights, so MTNN is a Nigerian company. Do you know that we don't have comparative advantage to other African countries?

That is a right question, Chinese companies will never be South African companies.

A Chinese company registered and produces in South Africa is a south African company.

PZ that is registered and manufactures in Nigeria is a Nigerian company.

DUFIL Prima Foods Plc, makers of indomie noodles is a Nigerian company and is qualified for free trade (duty exemption ) in a free trade agreement.

If free trade is that beneficial to all countries, what did the US pull out of TPP? Why is the UK pulling out of the EU?

The main fear with the African Free Trade idea is that China can set up a mega production company in one country and dominate the whole region.

They may be able to manage it well because they already have all the infrastructures on ground , Nigeria doesn't . Our local companies can't compete favourably considering the condition which they operate under

With epileptic power supply, bad roads and bad infrastructures, how will we compete with Chinese firms located in say south Africa or even Morocco.

Why are you afraid of china, don't you think Nigeria can compete with China. The leading internet provider in China is South African company. one of the biggest online shop in china is south african company. we can compete with China and win. why are south african able to do that.

South Africa said they will manage it well not just for South Africa, but for the whole continent. note: SADC countries are already ruled by south African rules.

South Africa will never allow company from china to set up company in South Africa, if the company is not from africa in order for it to operate in south africa it must sell 51 percent shares to south africans. automatically the company will be south african.

Power supply issue, south african state owned company Eskom vowed to fix all power issues in subsahara africa due to this free trade deal.

Africa should deal with issues such as infrastructure decay and human capacity so that it can increase it's production base before talking about trade liberalisation so as not to maintain the current level of unemployment with insecurity that comes along with it.

Mind you, in South Africa there is no decay buildings. there is no unemployment (if other Africas migrants were not working there). the right time to start is now.
