Hmm... I hope the book is not full of typos. The logic for two diagrams seems not to work for the third in the examples.

Step 2: subtraction for the numbers on the lower part.
Step 3: add the answers in step 1 and step 2 to get the middle.

But I think you should get a textbook that explains the answers. That way, you will be able to tell if you are wrong or there are typos. In my own time, Odiaka was the best in terms of explanation and workings.
