I was a very happy Man when I got the confirmation of my provisional admission to Study a Masters Program at the University of Ibadan Center for Sustainable Development. It was a rare opportunity and I took it with both hands.

I had always wanted to study a postgraduate program that would incorporate modules in Economics, Politics and Environmental studies. The Masters program was like an answered prayer.

I got to meet some of my new classmates at the orientation program. They were looking proper and well groomed. I would latter find out that they were from some of Nigeria’s best and emergent higher institutions of learning.

Some of them were from Covenant University, Afe Babaloa University, Crescent University, Babacock University, one or two persons from University of Lagos and myself from the University of Nigeria. I looked forward with glee to studying and conducting numerous research and briefings with these people within and outside Nigeria as the orientation would reveal.

Before long, we settled for our courses, required modules and ancillary modules too. Did I tell you that Cesdev, yes that is the acronym for my Center had the best classroom resources – world class desks and chairs, functional projectors, standby generators and a very long lasting solar energy Installation?

As if it was not enough, our teachers were the best in their respective field. If they weren’t leading lights in their fields, then they were Federal government and UN consultants of repute. How do you feel being taught about food security by the very man who prepared the Food Security Bill, or sitting in a Population management class and being taught by the man who designed the mechanism for the last National Population Census?

As if it was not enough, time and again we had expatriate professors from some of the best Universities in the world come teach us some of the emergent and latest trends in Sustainability and all its derivatives. Biodervisity, Deep Decarbonization, Decoupling, Green Growth & Green Economics and Energy Economics were some of the novel topics I got exposed to. Many a time I would be seen attending classes I had not registered for. It was not because there was a girl I was chicking ohh, rather, it was because the courses were so practical and well taught by people who were passionate about their profession.

On a field trip to Senegal, I got to see Africa for the first time, I was amazed to see and learn how Senegal was so self sufficient in Onions production because it had adapted simple technologies to ensure a year long planting in an area that is at the heart of the Sahara desert. Onions produced in a single village has made Senegal the single largest Onion exporting country in West Africa, What a feat!

With Students from the Universitê Cheik Antadiop the biggest university In Dakar Senegal we compared notes about SDGs deliverables of our both countries. We tried to see what was working, what wasn’t, and what would work in our countries. The heat was plenty in the day, but the beauty of Wollof Rice compensated for it in more ways than one. The Nigerian Embassy in Senegal was equally very magnanimous, in short I was proud to be a Nigerian.

I would latter complete my project in record time, a study on why Motor parks thrive and flourish In South Eastern Nigeria and while it is disorganised in the south west. In short you can get Lagos Bus in front of the University of Ibadan whereas in Enugu, you would have to go to the park, pay the fee, sign the passenger manifest and travel knowing that you are covered by Insurance.

My research would help city planners to know the realities in the transport sector, find out how to curb the malaise of Illegal motor parks – the hub of kidnappers. It would also help them plan well and make our cities smart and safe.

I am a happy man to hear that My Alma Mater is the best in Nigeria together with Covenant University. See, if you are looking to recruit graduates to fill technical positions in your organisation, go straight to Covenant University. Those guys are worth their weight in gold.
