Are there any Nigerians on this forum that are based in Togo? I lived in Abidjan for some years and from time to time I visited Ghana and Togo but I just recently moved to Togo being that life is easier and cheaper in Togo compared to Abidjan.

If you reside in Togo please let's meet here and discuss the Togo life in general.

Let me say a little about Togo. Its a small peace country that shares border with Benin Republic and Ghana. Their major languages French and ewe. They hardly speak English so first thing to note is that as a Nigerian (they call all Nigerians Igbo) it is 95% impossible to get a job here except you are very good in French.

Most Nigerians here are mainly into business and they dominate the main markets selling clothing's, shoes, electronics and so on. Others have businesses like bars and restaurants but by doing so you have to employ workers that can speak French and ewe and a little bit of English but then the ones that can speak English are very difficult to find.

Accommodation is quite okay in terms of price and there is constant light in the country. In the main city Lome, you can get really cheap houses for like 10,000 to 15,000cfa a month but then, most of those houses will be like a room with shared toilets and most of them you get water from wells. If you want a nice neat one bedroom self contained in Lome, you will pay up to 45,000cfa a month.
However in other areas like Bagida and Avepozo with are developing areas, you will get nice one bedroom self contained with flowing water and your own cash power (pre paid meter) for 25,000 to 30,000cfa a month.

Food is very cheap here and their main food is Akuome with Ademe or egbsese. They also have corn and sause and these meals you can feed your stomach full with just 500cfa. There are other normal meals as well and you can also get naija restaurants here were they sell normal naija meals with isi ewu, nkwobi and abacha. If you have a nice home you can cook your naija meals in your house by yourself.

There are lots of nice beaches here were you can also go the relax and have some fun. These French people love enjoyment and from as early as 9am in the morning you can find people already drinking beer in the beaches both guys and ladies, no time.

These are just but a few things you should know about Togo.

If I want to take a 2wks Vacay in Togo, how much should I budget, I want to visit not less than 3african country this year God willing, and I want to do it every year.

I think N50,000 which is about 75,000cfa franc would do justice to a good chilling two weeks in Togo. The cheapest neat hotel I have seen so far in a safe place goes for 4,000cfa for rooms with just fans and 7,000cfa for rooms with AC. Other nice hotels go for around 12,000cfa above. Food is not expensive. Shayo is from 500cfa for normal beer. So I think the 75,000cfa will go a long way for two weeks and you might still have change that is if you don't go and dash all your money to olosho because for woman issue, its very hard because they don't speak English at all so you are mostly to meet more olosho which will burn your money.

Interesting.... But I thought Abidjan is better in terms of business. So Togo is better than Abidjan, Ghana, Cotonou in terms of which criteria? I just visited Cotonou last week and like it's calm but I'm a bit confused of the market pressure for business since the street is scanty. I'm thinking it won't have market pressure for business. Educate me on Togo.....

I never said Togo is better than Abidjan, Ghana and Cotonou. Everywhere has their own different advantage and disadvantage. Am only talking about Togo from what I see here.

Noted, I just wanted to learn from your point of view because I have not been to other countries you mentioned except Benin Republic.

I don't drink bear, as per olosho; I intend to make friends with a local girl withing the 2wks cos I hear some of them speak Yoruba a bit. So if I get lucky with the girl(no p) cos I don't do olosho as well, but my intention is to check out other African countries. thanks

Yoruba ke... Who ever told you that is so wrong. They dont speak any language aside french and ewe. If you meet any Togo babe that speak yoruba she is definitely an olosho or someone that has really travelled to maybe Benin or Naija. I heard they have yoruba speaking people in Benin but as for Togo i never heard.
The only yorubas i have seen in Togo are from Nigeria or Benin Republic. Majority of Nigerians here are igbos that why they call all Nigerians igbo.
To find people that speak english is very hard so and those that manage to speak, not everything they can understand so you cant really flow the way you will should because you have to scatter the english somehow so they know what you are saying and thats for the ones that manage to hear small english. If not most people wont even be able to answer you because they have no single idea of what you are talking about if you speak english.
And another thing is that once you dont speak french or their language they just automatically call you igbo because they believe only Nigerians speak english. And by this they will try to always extort you because they just see all Nigerians as money making machines over here.

I thought you were referring to a Togo food. I think ewa and something like eforin or so sounds familiar but haven't eaten it because am not a Lagosian. Am from Zaria, Kaduna.

Yeah Abidjan is far more beautiful and bubbling though but Lome is more peaceful and easier to make money than in Abidjan. And also in terms of expenses Lome is better off than Abidjan.

yeah...they are a very tiny minority... and a Yoruba person in Nigeria will understand their dialect without problem

Very well my brother. Very very well. If you mean N500,000 which is about 750,000cfa franc then for sure you are very good to go.

You can start a good restaurant or bar. You can also decide to join the clothing importation business which is one of the major thing most Nigerians do here. Na we get the market.

But business really depend on what you will be comfortable and enjoy doing. Like I import clothings and supply bulk wholesale to Ghana.

You said 500k and I said 750k CFA not 75k if thats a typo error.
With 250k you will get a nice place for a year. So you have 500k to start and that's really good to go. Its a very good one.

Go through my post, the official language here is French. Keep in mind that English is a no no here.

You will get a nice one bedroom self contain with 250k a year.

Lome is very safe as long as you don't carry that naija mentality of am better than my you or forming chairman things. Just leave your life and be friendly thats all.

Any business you intend to do is fine, the only problem you will have is language barrier. A taxi business might move I don't know because bike (okada) is moving very well here so private taxi I can't say. Most people use bike or normally taxis doing the routes with plenty passengers inside.
Expect you want to find a driver that will run the taxi because if its you, it will be hard except you can speak French.
