You cannot easily solve it by trial and error cause the question has no integer solutions.

The solutions can be obtained this way though...

Let the first,second,third and fourth box be w,x,y and z respectively.
We now have the system:
w+x=8...(1)
w+y=13...(2)
x+z=8...(3)
y-z=6...(4)

Adding (3) and (4)
x+y=14

Adding (1) and (2)
2w+x+y=21
2w+14=21
2w=7
w=3.5

x=8 - 3.5
x=4.5

y=13 - 3.5
y=9.5

z=8 - 4.5
z=3.5

Therefore,
The first box is 3.5, the next box by the right is 4.5 and the two boxes below are 9.5 and 3.5 respectively.
