Lagos State Government Invests in Drones to Improve Healthcare Delivery July 24, 2018 Deborah Soyombo 1 Comment Drones, Healthcare, Technology In a bid to improve the healthcare sector, the Lagos State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Zipline International Inc, a Silicon Valley drone startup, to offer a drone-enabled supply solution in the health sector. Zipline is a robotics airplane manufacturer based in California focusing on delivering medical supplies to undeveloped and underdeveloped areas. According to the State’s Commissioner of Science and Technology, Mr Hakeem Fahm, the drones to be acquired would be used to ensure secured, reliable and timely deliveries of essential health care products to publicly-owned hospitals and other health facilities in the State. Drones can be of great importance in the health sector in Nigeria taking into consideration that medical professionals from emergency responders in large hospitals face a host of challenges everyday—challenges unmanned aircraft systems, can help overcome. With the use of Drones, it is possible to deliver blood, vaccines, birth control, snake bite serum and other medical supplies to communities or rural areas and also have the ability to reach victims who require immediate medical attention within minutes, which in some cases could mean the difference between life and death. They can transport medicine within hospital walls and courier blood between hospital buildings faster and more efficiently than humans would do. The United Nations has employed 5-foot drones to air drop condoms over rural parts of Ghana, where a fraction of women have access to contraceptives. Other countries — including Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Ethiopia, and Mozambique — are also considering adopting the use of drones to ensure deliveries that once took days can be made in mere minutes. Doctors Without Borders have already used them in Papua New Guinea to transport dummy TB test samples from a remote village to the large coastal city of Kerema. After the recent fire accident that took lives and properties, the state has been trying her best to ensure safety and improve on its response to emergency. According to a 2017 paper published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, in some cases, drones could carry defibrillators to heart attack victims faster than an ambulance. Researchers simulated emergency situations and found they could get automatic external defibrillators to the scene an average of 16 minutes faster by drone than by ambulance. However, taking a clue from the last accident, the firemen could not quench the fire on time due to the traffic which led to widespread and lost of properties. This might be one of the reasons the state government decided to invest in this acquisition of drones. Truth be told, there will always be traffic in Lagos state because of the population. Meanwhile, this would be not be the first effort by Zipline, as the Silicon Valley Drone startup launched the world’s first National Drone delivery operation in Rwanda when it partnered with the Government in 2016 to deliver medical supplies to its hospitals. The company established a distribution center with 15 drones to deliver blood, plasma and platelets to twenty one hospitals across the western half of the country. Since launching the service in Rwanda, Zipline has flown 300,000 km, delivering 7,000 units of blood over 4,000 flights, approximately a third of which have been in emergency life-saving situations and is now delivering more than 20% of Rwanda’s blood supply outside of the capital, Kigali. A representative of Zipline, Mr. Diekoye Oyeyinka adds that Lagos will be the first mega city in the world to have an autonomous instant delivery system, when it is fully deployed. 1 Like |

Some country don't make noise. Ruwanda President appoint Ghananian millionaire Chairperson to key gov’t institution Founder and CEO, Africa Leadership Academy, Ghanaian-born Fred Swaniker has joined the pool of other global CEOs who advise President Kagame. The 43-year-old who believes many of Africa’s problems boil down to lack of good leadership, and hopes to develop Africa’s own Steve Jobs, has been appointed by President Kagame as chairperson for Rwanda Convention Bureau (RCB), a strategic business unit of Rwanda Development Board’s Tourism and Conservation Department. RCB is tasked with milking every little from the global tourism market, specifically targeting Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE), a strategy Rwanda believes will create value in the tourism sector, the country’s largest foreign exchange earner, fetching an annual average of about $500 million. This is an area that is playing an important role in Rwanda’s growth, bringing in 15% of all tourism revenue. The MICE tourism contributed $52million in 2018, from $47million in 2017 with aim to increase it to $88 million in 2019. Kagame brings the successful Ghanaian mogul on board as chairperson of board of directors with hope that his global business acumen will add value and help push the country’s agenda of generating more revenues from tourism. The development comes at a time when Rwanda has just signed a promotional deal with Arsenal Football Club to advertise Rwanda under “Visit Rwanda” project as a touristic destination and a country ripe for green investment opportunities. NIGERIA AND TECHNOLOGY ARE LIKE 5&6 DeepTechAfrica Hosts Virtual Reality Enthusiasts in Ibadan April 10, 2019 Opeyemi Olugbemiro 0 Comment Ibadan, Virtual Reality The tech community in Ibadan experienced an exciting boost in the area of Virtual and Augmented reality after an event by DeepTech Africa to spark up conversations in the industry. With the theme: Building Immersive Experience, stakeholders from different sectors converged on Wennovation Hub, Ibadan to discuss how VR, AR, Internet of Things, Machine Learning etc. can lead the way in the next generation of tech solutions. While speaking, the Program accelerator Manager of CCHub Nigeria, Francis Sani explained that even though AR/VR is still in its early stage and yet to be used seamlessly in Nigeria, there is a need to prepare for it because it is at the forefront of the evolution of technology that the next generation will adopt. He shared that CCHUB is collaborating with Facebook to support students at various level such as Bsc, Msc, PhD and startup to get funding in building Immersive technologies. Also, a Senior Developer at IVo thinking and AR Expert emphasized that AR can change how students learn. He mentioned an example of identifying anything in existence with an AR app that uses computer vision and some learning algorithm just like a google assistant to find information. On his part, the convener, Ibrahim Lukman that the VR and AR technology has the capacity to disrupt a lot of spheres from medicine to architecture, engineering etc. “We can use VR to train people in different profession… for example, an electrician can learn precautions via an immersive experience that puts him in real time situation or even a fire-station simulating a real incident to train its personnel”, he explained. Data Source: lumusvision.com Ibrahim added that the technology can also bridge the gaps in learning a new language, an environment that gives you the opportunity to learn one-on-one from an instructor through a trained avatar and several other possibilities that can improve learning outcomes. Also, in mining, miners or site engineers don’t need to dig to wide, they just need to send a sensor down the mines and they can have a whole clear vision inside the VR environment. About 70 people participated in the event by DeepTech Africa in Ibadan—a community of over 250 members and 40 experts across diverse fields in six cities in Nigerian and Kenya. The Ibadan VR meetup is the maiden edition and the team has expressed commitment to take the message to other areas in the country. DeepTech Africa currently has members in Ilorin, Lagos, Abuja, Oshogbo,Kano and Nairobi and is committed to building an Africa that consumes technologies built on the continent. 2 Likes |

jaycent: Pulse Nigieria 2018-12-19 2019 Budget: Buhari lists achievements on infrastructure Tell your friends 2019 Budget: Buhari lists achievements on infrastructure 2019 Budget: Buhari lists achievements on infrastructure President Muhammadu Buhari has identified infrastructure development as one of the areas in which his administration had made a lot of progress. The president stated this while presenting the 2019 budget proposal before the joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday in Abuja. President Buhari, who announced budget proposal of N8.83 trillion for the 2019 fiscal year, said that the 2018 budget recorded a performance of 67 per cent. He said that the Federal Government carried over capital projects that were not likely to be fully funded by 2018 to 2019. According to him, the 2019 budget is intended to further place the economy on the path of inclusive, diversified and sustainable growth in order to continue to lift a significant number of citizens out of poverty. He stated that government’s approach on infrastructure was a logical one as it simply prioritised the completion of critical on-going projects over the introduction of new ones. The president said that, for example, in the Ministry of Water Resources, the Federal Government identified 116 abandoned or uncompleted projects relating to irrigation, dams, drainage and water supply. He listed the completed and/or commissioned projects to include- Central Ogbia Regional Water Project in Bayelsa State; Northern Ishan Regional Water Supply Project, Edo; Sabke Water Supply Project, Katsina State and Takum Water Supply Project in Taraba. Others, according to the president, are Ogwashi – Uku Dam in Delta; Shagari Irrigation Project in Sokoto State, Galma Dam, Kaduna State; Mangu Water Supply Project, Plateau State as well as the Federal University of Agriculture and Makurdi Water Supply Project in Benue. He said that his administration also made giant strides in the railway sector. “We completed and commissioned the Abuja – Kaduna Rail Line and the Abuja Metro-Rail Project. Similarly, the previously abandoned Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri Rail Line is undergoing test runs and will soon be commissioned. “We are also on track for the Lagos – Kano rail line as significant progress has been made on the Lagos to Ibadan segment of the project. “ We remain committed to rebuilding and expanding our road network. In 2018, an additional 1,531 kilometers of roads have been constructed and 1,008 kilometers rehabilitated across the country. “Priority projects such as the Abuja – Kaduna – Kano highway as well as the Second Niger Bridge are well underway through the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund,’’ he said. The president also disclosed that in every state of the federation there was a major Federal road project going on. He said that in the North Central, long neglected roads like the Ilorin – Jebba Road, a stretch of 93 km that took a number of days to travel had been completed to provide a critical link between the Northern and Southern parts of the country over a few hours. Buhari said that his administration had awarded the dualisation of the road to expand it all the way to Mokwa, as was done to the Abuja – Keffi-Lafia -Makurdi roads where work recently commenced. According to him, work has resumed on the Suleja – Minna road after years of inactivity. “In the South-South, we have recently completed the 60 km section of Alesi to Ugep in Cross River State, and awarded the 72km section from Odukpani Junction to Ugep which will reduce a journey that used to take 3 days a few years back, to 3 hours. “Work has also commenced on the Calabar – Itu – Odukpani Road that links Akwa-Ibom to Cross River State, as we have started work on the long-neglected Bodo – Bonny Bridge to connect these long separated communities. “In the South East, a critical section of Umunya linking Awka to Onitsha, a stretch of 18 kilometers, is being constructed now and one side of it should be ready for use before June 2019. Roads like Arochukwu – Ohafia – Bende are also receiving our attention. “In the South–West, long neglected and abandoned roads like the Badagry Expressway have been awarded for construction along with the Apapa – Tin Can Island, Mile 2 – Oworonshoki, road to ease the congestion currently being experienced in Lagos, while interstate roads linking Ogun through Ikorodu to Sagamu, and Ipaja to Otta and Abeokuta are being repaired with payment to contractors. “In the North-West, we have completed the Sokoto to Tambuwal – Jega Road comprising 135 Km out of the entire Sokoto to Yauri stretch and sections of Kaduna Eastern bypass and Kano Western bypass are also progressing. “In the North-East, we have started work on the long-neglected Mayo – Belwa – Jada Road, and the Gombe – Numan – Jalingo Road and recently awarded the reconstruction of bridges damaged by insurgency,” he said. According to him, the N100 billion Sukuk Bond raised by the government is being used to fund 25 another 25 road projects across the country. He listed the projects to include the construction of the Oju/Loko-Oweto bridge over River Benue, dualisation of section of Abuja-Abaji-Lokoja road, dualisation of section of Suleja – Minna road, dualisation of section of Lokoja-Benin road (Obajana – Okene), Dualisation of section of Kano – Maiduguri road linking Kano – Jigawa – Bauchi – Yobe. Others are the dualisation of section of Kano – Katsina road, Dualisation of section of Kano Western By-Pass, Construction of Kaduna Eastern By-Pass, Rehabilitation of outstanding section of Onitsha-Enugu Expressway, Rehabilitation of Enugu-Port Harcourt road and dualisation of section of Yenegoa road junction. The president said that his government had also creditably acquitted itself in power supply, as it was working on over 90 transmission projects across the country. Tell your 2 Likes 1 Share |
