Golden Eaglets of Nigeria beat Tanzania 5-4 in the opening game of 2019 U17 AFCON

The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria opened their 2019 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a 5-4 win over host Tanzania.

Golden Eaglets of Nigeria were 5-4 winners over Tanzania in opening game of 2019 U17 AFCON (CAF)
It was a blistering and roller coaster game with Tanzania coming back from 3-1 down to take the lead before Nigeria fought back again and regained the lead.

Nigeria first took the lead through Olatomi Olaniyan in the 21st minute but Tanzania responded immediately with an equaliser.

The Golden Eaglets the took control of the game and ran into a two-goal lead through goals from Wisdom Ubani and Akinkunmi Amoo in the 31st and 37th minute.

Nigeria started the second half as they ended the first but they blew two good chances before Kelvin John pulled one back for Tanzania who ran into a 4-3 lead with two debatable penalties to turn the game around.

The game which will go down as a U17 AFCON classic got another twist as the Golden Eaglets got the equaliser to make it 4-4 through Ubani before Ibraheem Jabaar fired in the winning goal in the 79th minute.

Nigeria will next face Angola in their next group game on Wednesday, April 17.

Preview: nigeria vs angola

Jolomi Atume (Assistant Coach, Nigeria)
We understand that we need to win this game to qualify not only to the semifinal, but also to the FIFA U-17 World Cup. It is a very important match for us and for our opponents too. To be honest this will be an open game for both teams.

Angola is a good team. They play well and they are good on the offensive. We know that our defense made several mistakes in the opening fixture against Tanzania which saw us concede four goals, but we are working on to improve.

This is a youth tournament so sometimes the boys want to express themselves and tactical discipline is low but we will play well.

Andrian Akande (Midfielder, Nigeria)
The game against Tanzania was tough, it was difficult to play against the home crowd but we managed to hold on to claim victory. The game against Angola is more important for us because our ambition is to qualify to the FIFA U-17 World Cup and we need to win this game to achieve that. We are not under pressure; we are relaxed and are eager to do well.

Pedro Dos Santos (Head Coach, Angola)
This is a big opportunity for us because if we win this game we will have a good chance of going to the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil. The confidence and motivation level of my players has soared after beating Uganda in the opening match.
We watched Nigeria against Tanzania, and they are a good team especially in attack. But we will map out a strategy to contain them and possibly win.

Afonso Binga (Defender, Angola)
We are confident of victory against Nigeria. They are a strong team but we are ready to take them on. We are not scared by the fact that they scored five past Tanzania, it happens in football. We are a different team and we have prepared well for this.

Nigeria always wins this smaller tournaments because they cheat.

But when it comes to the Super Eagles, where they can use even grandparents to play, to beat ordinary Togo or South Africa becomes a big problem. undecided

Wishing the young lads all the best. Those boys play with so much life and zeal. That's the typical Nigeria football play I used to know of. I hope they keep up the pace.
