What is the difference between these words that are pronounced alike.

1). Where & Were.

2). Advise & Advice.

3). Shot & Short.

Were= Normally used with a present participle to form continuous tenses.


Advise= To give counsel to.
Advice= An opinion or recommendation offered as a guide to conduct or action.

Shot= Past and past participle of shoot (e.g. a gun)
Short= Is for instance being an amount of time that is less than average or usual.

It can be used as an adverb and also as a conjunction.
Examples: Where are you going; I know where he is

Were is the plural and the second person singular of the past tense of be.
Example: there were ten failures in the examination


2). Advise & Advice.
Advise is a verb meaning “to give counsel to; offer an opinion or suggestion as worth following.”
Example: I won't choose until somebody can advise me
Advice is a noun meaning “an opinion or recommendation offered as a guide to action, conduct, etc.”
Example: May I give you some advice?

3). Shot & Short.
Shot is the past and past participle of shoot.
Example: His shot was slow but accurate

Short is an adjective that is used to describe nouns that are small in length, distance, or height
Example: A short flight

1)Where shows places as an adverb while were is a verb past tense of are an auxiliary verb that is plural in form.
2)Advise is a verb which mean to offer advice to someone while advice is a noun that is an opinion recommended to someone
3)Shot is the past tense of shoot which mean to throw,project something while short means having small distance or to produce something lower,smaller than agreed

The main difference between each of the three pairs of words is that they have similar pronunciation but different meanings i.e they are homophones
1. Where : it is used to ask question regarding a place, location
e.g where are you?
Were: it is used with a present participle to form a continuous tense or it can used to form a past tense involving more than one person
e.g how many girls were in class today

2. Advise: it is an example of a verb that means opinion or suggestion offering.
e.g I advise students daily not to be lazy
Advice: it is an example of a noun that means recommendation, word of guidance
e.g I gave a few words of advice to her

3. Shot: It is the past and past participle of the word "shoot". It nvolves application of a force
e.g He shot the ball

Short: it is a qualitative adjective that means not lengthy or opposite of tall
e.g The skirt is short in length

1). Where is searching for position ---- preposition. & Were is, are and was present at position----Verb.
2). Advise----verb & Advice---- noun.
3). Short---- El Rufai's size & Shot---- Bokoharam and ak47 actions.
