As a young graduate from a federal university in Nigeria, I've battled and won a lot of battles both physical, spiritual and emotional.
To say the least being a jobless graduate is not only tiring but highly suicidal as you will see a lot of oppression either from friends from rich background whose parents have the connect or from your gee friends balling really hard.

To this end, Man gats look for a way out and find a lasting solution. As a graduate from an agricultural school, I've always had passion for agriculture (animal) but as we all know this requires huge capital hence, getting capital is a huge challenge to face.
Luckily for me within the space of 3 years, I was able to raise a quite amount of money as capital and also acquire 2 plots of land in a remote area precisely in Ibadan.
I've got interest in broiler production esp the six weeks production.
This is a call to experts and experienced farmers in the house to please help a brother in need with ideas where needed and correct me wherever I'm erring.

So I started with the construction of the pen. I plan on having a pen that can raise at least a thousand birds till table size so I went for a pen dimension of 40 by 50 ft housing.
Hence, it will be deep litter housing type.
Contacted my carpenter for quotations for major materials and I got the ffg;
3 X 4 wood - 40pcs
2 X 4 wood - 150pcs
2 X 3 wood - 250pcs
Bokoharam net - 10 bundles
Nails
Roofing sheets 15bundles
Chicken net 1bundle

And so the following week we got them all at the plank section of the Bodija market in Ibadan and so construction started immediately.

The next phase of the construction is the flooring and laying of two coaches of blocks around the pen.
I want to construct in such a way that it will just be one coach of block above the foundation to allow fresh air get in touch with the birds.
The work will start by Monday by God's grace, the bricklayer was on farm last week and gave d ffg quotations;
Gravel - 4 tipper loads
sand - 1 tipper load
Cement - 40 bags
Blocks 6" - 350 pcs

I've been working on getting markets even before production starts and I can say its impressive.
Just hope it won't change by the time I'll need them.
Some facts I got are;
They buy in large quantities ( I mean processors) like 500 birds and above, some buy at the rate of 520 or 550 naira per kilo of live weight

Yes I've done it before but it was on a small scale.
Talking of experience, to say the least I'm an intermediate. Reason why I created the thread hoping to get tips from experienced farmers here and hoping to get a vet doctor around as a consultant

Bolo haram net, 4200 X 10 = 42k
Workmanship 75k
Miscellaneous, 50k
Total = 587K

BEFORE CONSTRUCTING A BROILER PEN YOU NEED A COMPASS TO MEASURE THE RIGHT PEN SITTING BECAUSE ONE OF THE MAJOR CHALLENGIES FACED IN BROILER IS HEAT STRESS AND IF YOU DONT GET THE PEN SITTING RIGHT FROM THE BEGINING THAT WILL BE ALOT OF CHALLENGE WHEN THE BIRDS ARE MATURED.

SECONDLY I SAW IN THE PICTURE THE FRONTAGE YOU COVERED WITH ZINC PAN KINDLY REMOVE IT AND COVER IT WITH CHICKEN NET YOU WILL NED ALOT OF THE BREEZE AFTER 2 WEEKS

1. A friend of mine saw the picture of the zinc in front and also advised me to remove it. I however overlooked thinking it doesn't matter but now that you've raised it I have no other option than to get it removed.

2. l used the bokohrm net thinking its stronger than the chicken net cos of security. Its true it has tiny holes. if as time goes on I realize the reduction in breeze, I might have to replace it with chicken net.

3. I'll make it two coaches round as you've directed Sir.

4. I'm also going for the commercial broiler production

So the next thing I'm doing next is the construction of a well.
There's a stream down the land but i feel it won't be suitable for the birds. So i feel digging a well will be the best as it will be more hygienic than clean than the stream water.
Or is there a way i can treat the stream water to make it suitable for the birds?

Stream ke. Please dig a well.

Please dig borehole or well don't use stream water. And you need to follow a step by step measures by taking the water for test and treatment before serving it to the birds. And there is a measure to be taken wen giving the water to the birds during hot weather. Tnx

To test depth of the sea ....
Run for a year and know your terrain ....
Before going full blast in terms of Land and other assets...
Pls it is advisable to attach yourself to a farm of dis capacity ...
At least for a month... and see how they run a comm broiler farm....
U will be able to address all the major issues raised by Olatunde here
With a month practical experience in a comm broiler outfit...
Also try and get a biz plan.. its your road map....that address ur
Finance, Cash Flow, Source of Chicks, Security, Bio Security, Feeds, Veterinary Services, Off taker Agreement etc....
