When you tell people about homosexuality or when a news relating to any homosexual(s) hits the frontpage or, at least, finds its way to nairaland, it's not unusual to find homophobic comments filled with utter disdain and hatred. It's clear from reading these comments that if the monikers behind those comments had their way, they would physically assault homosexuals or, if they were lawmakers, they would oppress homosexuals with homophobic laws. This is self-evident when you observe that in many parts of Nigeria and Africa at large, people caught in homosexual acts are disgraced publicly in a brutal and demeaning manner. Some are stripped naked, shamed, beaten and paraded about the community.

Why the hatred for homosexuals? As it turns out, when you ask these homophobes why they hate, disdain, discriminate and disapprove of homosexuality and homosexuals, they have no reasonable answer to give. When you ask them why they think homosexuality should be a taboo, they have no reasonable answer to give. Even if they say something, it's usually mere sentiments and non sequiturs. The three main answers you will hear from these homophobes are :
1) "That's not how god made it. Its against the will of god."
2) "It's not natural."
3) "It's against our against our culture."

Let's address these points.
1) THAT'S NOT HOW GOD MADE IT. ITS AGAINST THE WILL OF GOD.
The question is "which god?" Have you met this god before? How do you know that this god exists? Who taught you his will? Do you have any evidence that this god exists? The idea of all religious gods and even any creator god has no sound basis in reality. No religious god exists. If your god doesn't exist then this argument holds no water and cannot serve as a justification for homophobia. Its like saying "homosexuality is wrong because its not in the will of Amadioha." Now then, why do you hate homosexuality and homosexuals?

2) ITS NOT NATURAL.
This argument is a very stupid one. Are cyanide, cobras, crocodiles and uranium not natural? Are they harmless and okay for the human body? Are telephones, televisions, cars, knives, antimalarial drugs etc. not unnatural? Do you hate them like you hate homosexuals? Even if something is unnatural, the mere fact of it being unnatural doesn't imply harm or danger to humanity. Homosexuality doesn't harm the gays and heterosexuals. What's disasterous, horrible or reproachful in something being unnatural? If something is unnatural, does it warrant hatred and utter disdain from you just because it is unnatural?

Besides, who told you that homosexuality is unnatural? Reproduction has the natural/biological constraint that a man must penetrate and ejaculate in a fertile woman during sexual intercourse in order to reproduce. For the enjoyment of sexual pleasure, not reproduction, what natural constraint(s) can you point out to conclude that homosexuality is unnatural. Homosexuality has been observed in other animals too. So then, why do you hate homosexuality and homosexuals?

3) IT'S AGAINST OUR AGAINST OUR CULTURE.
If you culture dictates that girls shouldn't school, will you accept that? If you culture dictates that twins are to be killed, will you accept that? The answer to the two questions is "No." Why? Because cultural practices must kneel at the feet of reasoning ie. reasoning is superior. So if your culture says homosexuality is wrong, reasoning asks "why?" Why should your culture be against something if there is nothing wrong in it? Why should your culture be against albinos if there is nothing wrong with albinos? Reasoning says that albinos are human beings too hence they should be treated equally and fairly by the community hence every culture ought to kneel at the feet reasoning and accept albinos. You get my point?

Merely using your culture as a standard is a very stupid thing. The main thing is "what is the reasoning behind X?" So then, why do you hate homosexuality and gays?

They are human beings like anyone else and shouldn't be discriminated against by society. Homophobia has no justification and as long as the homosexual act is consensual, no problem.
