Tyrion is actually pretty useless now. Man was whinging about how he could be up on the walls not even fighting, but at least watching and maybe seeing something that nobody else could see.

Cersei was fully in control of her fate in that battle. In case you missed it, Cersei went into that room on her own terms, fully prepared to die on her own terms, with her children and all the other women. She had a guard not to protect everyone in the room, but to kill them all.

One could even argue that the Night King's knowledge of Jon being in possession of the Steel was what made him reanimate fresh bodies in order to defending himself. The Night King saw the power of the steel in the previous season.

The steel is not just rare because Valyria not longer existed. The argument would be the number of Dragons available, spell casters to fuse the spell and the Dragon fire in order to forge to steel.

An armour wouldn't have been able to stop the power of the steel.

Snow and Dany actually plan to ambush the Night King but Dany had to leave when the war started to help those fighting and Snow followed. Watch were Snow told her "the Night king is coming" and she replied "the dead are already here"
