I think a good way to know the city you're going is to follow the city on Instagram

Just go to the explore tab and type the city

Then follow the hashtag of your city eg #Bonn

You'll see People who post pictures in that city and use that location or tag it in their post

You'll get to see real life pictures of the city and not some googled stuff

If you miss your flight, what you need to do and some other tips by pompido

Maybe your flight from naija arrived late or for whatever reason, all you needed to have done is go to the Turkish Airline customer desk and explain to them. They would normally book you on the next flight out free of charge. If the next flight is still some hours away, they even give meal tickets that you can use to get food at the food stands in the airport. Such experiences abound on this thread (part 2 and 3).

Your naija bank cards will also work anywhere for withdrawals (rates might not be nice).

Never put your cash and cards in your main luggage. Have them in your carry on or wallet (that's its purpose). Immigration can't force you to part with nothing. It is your money and you are not father Christmas.

Planning is key when travelling to a new environment. Google map is your friend. Ask people the best way to get to where you need to be and let them know if you are coming on a weekday or weekend. Transportation frequency differs. Staying a hostel is quite expensive and so should be avoided unless you have absolutely no where to stay.

Why N26 black card? Been using N26 for up to 2 years and see zero value in the black card other than just gifting the bank money when the regular account does everything one needs.

No matter the type of question you have please ask. Better to ask and get varying responses you can

Devmantic contribution

Having a good knowledge of the German language prior to graduation is important although most international companies in Germany (e.g. Siemens, BASF, German Aerospace Centre [DLR] etc.) are more than willing to hire young foreign graduates who speak English and have limited German language skill upon graduation. On the long run, one is expected to learn German over time if he/she wants to work and live in Germany. The main challenge in landing a job after studies is skill-related. Imagine having a skill that is on-demand yet rare to find (e.g. programming with Python, C++, Java or being a specialist in MATLAB, AutoCAD, PDMS etc.), everytime you submit a CV, I can guarantee you that you will be given an opportunity for an interview in English. So my advice to those coming to study in Germany will be to focus on STEM-related courses and DO ALL YOU CAN to master a software skill (either in Nigeria or in Germany via internships or HiWis).

KINGCEEZAH response

What you said is true, but how many of them. An English speaking student applied for internship to about 200 companies and got just 2 interview invitation in English language.

So if you want to work so hard for so little opportunities, dont learn it. Germans would employ Ausbildung/ Bachelors grad who speaks German over masters grad that does not plus your C++ and MATLAB

pompido response to KINGCEEZAH

You kind of missed the point where he said Skill is the determining factor. up to 95% of those I know that got internships and Jobs(after studies) speak near zero German. Loads of companies will employ skilled people without German knowledge and pay for them to learn the language on the job.

So this statement Germans would employ Ausbildung/ Bachelors grad who speaks German over masters grad that does not plus your C++ and MATLAB is absolutely incorrect.

Of course this is not saying Forget the Language, I am just saying that most companies here employ skill over language, especially in STEM.

Re: Nigerian Students In Germany..how Do You Survive?? by Hadampson(m): 4:37pm On May 01, 2019
Soocute tips

1)See eehhh, when you dey 9ja, you usually see Germanyy as "Geerrrrrmmmaaaanyyyyyy" but when you eventually come here, the excitement will "shift" and you wake up to reality grin grin grin

TIP: make your plans solid and be prepared from home. Get all the information about the city you are headed especially ask people wey dey ground. For instance, i live in Bayernn (Schweinfurtt). Internet reported that my city is the 3rd richest city in Germanyy and the most industrialized (Not so sure about the most Industrialized part again). To me i felt like...."Hustle go stew" my dear the reality is that those big big companies would hardly wanna give out "student job". But this stuff is where man wan pay bills. So you see? Bills don't stop coming, so boys be porting outside city to get jobs. Sometimes you pay big transport. I know guys wey go other city pay fresh rent and they are looking for someone to occupy their house here and even pay half of the rent. Kole werk

2) Languge IS KEY: I visited Osnabruckk, a city in Hanover nd spent 1 week there. I discovered they speak correct Germann(Hoch Deutsch) and i was able to improve my Germann and my hearing skills in days. I was impressed. It's not the same as in Bayernn. They speak Bayerish...kinda dialect. Now, the Germann person i was in his house told me "If you have C1 level of Germann in my city (Osnabruckk) you have a great point to apply for citizenship." These are his words. I didn't do further research but based on his portfolio (he was in Government for 20 years and currently in charge of refugees shelter blablabla) i know he knows poo.

You need language anyhow to succeed in this country. Imagine the ease of improving your Germann by simply "Being in the right surrounding"? even if you speak nonsense, atleast you hear people speaking the right poo, its easy to pickup and boost your morale to even try to speak.

3) Some good Unis are not on daad.de. Even if they are, not all their courses are on daad. The University of Osnabruckk is gadamm good. Bigger than my current uni and has courses in English. With population of over 30,000 students offering almost all the courses you can think of, whereas we are just 2,700 my area. Plus the campus in wurzburg we will be about 9000 max. Do the Maths.

Now use your head, it will be easy for you to find escape route in a school with many 'Humans'(male/females) than a school with few Humans. If you know you know grin If you think am bluffing, imagine entering plane back to dah gadame country if things no stew as you thought? I no go talk again. Infact i don't even want to go into details.

4) You can change school and transfer credits (Bachelors only) but not for than 90 credits. Which means you can start from third semester in you new school if the course contents are same ooo. Why not make the right choice from the beginning when you still can?

5) A friend said that "Bayernn is Bayernn and Germanyy is Germanyy" because their shits are kinda different from other parts of DE. So, i asked myself, if DE na DE, why do i want to go through the difficult path bikonu?

6) Finally everything wey i just talk na lie!! (I sabi wetin make i dey yarn for awa tongue ooo. No be say i no sabi spell Ingrish, data security is real. I sabi y i plus extra letters to names, i no hear say them come for me cheesy grin

7) If you can, learn coding.....work go pursue you enter gutter. Atleast that one no need language proficiency. i actually got an offer in my Uni but na C++ dem need but na Python i dey write. The pay na die and i could work longer hours had i known C++.

8.) Even as a student (Where i live) you need to earn net of 1500 euro monthly to invite your "anybody".....make you know ooooo. This net is not possible for a student to earn legally.

9) Before you come here, If you like, give woman belle, if you like promise girl marriage, i nogo warn you grin except your religion and personality permits many wives and your current "plural" no get mind to kuku poison you and your new plural. Better remain single and come here because even plural people come here port to single cheesy grin

10) If you come here with hustle for head, make sure you smart pass the gwomenti. I have seen where they control one nigga give am 30 days to leave DE. The nigga arrange lawyer, show that he passed certain number of courses in school, spent all that hustle money back to gwomenti. So, arrange you juju well well make you fit miss cheesy

Reason why you should learn German before leaving by Soocute

My flatmate couldn't get job all these while after hundreds of applications. He managed to get a call yesterday from a potential employer for an interview on Monday.

Luckily he was shouting hallo!! hallo!!! till he got to me and quickly passed me the phone.
So i took the call for him and it was in invitation for interview on Monday.
I spoke all the German and got all the details for him.

How he's been wondering how he'd manage the interview tomorrow because no be him answer call.

Unfortunately i can't follow him to the interview because i've got to go to work tomorrow.
Since last night all i've been hearing from his end is no longer Netflix movie sounds and "I've gat you babe, to make me feel alright...." na Olukonya and TB Joshua tapes. grin
I know how it feels to be jobless here. I pray God answers him really. It's not funny.

Fasten your seatbelts guys. This hustle is fvcking real

Soocute experience in school

People come to Europe for many reasons sha.
Since our results came out for the first semester, people don quiet for our class group chat. I mean both Americans, Indians etc. Have you encountered those lecturers that are "stingy" with marks?

My dear, a friend in Cottbus is doing 4 courses in a semester (renewable energy something) and all the exam he says is like a presentation. That means, you'd be given a topic to go and research and at the exam day you just come do presentations.

Here in my school in Bavaria, i just need someone in this NL in my school to come and testify. grin

Me i know i am not lazy, but when you feel you got all the answers correct and yet the result just be like say you dey lie.

LIFE: all the regions of NRW, have one ticket to tour them. Students card (from semester fee) of about 250 euro per semester, that means, you have wider tourism destination and job search possibilities.

Here, we have two campuses, your ticket from Schweinfurt campus cannot take you to Wurzburg campus....same Lower Franconia oooo not to talk of the whole Bavaria? Tankiu.

No fun. social life here is dead because people here are mainly old people and workers. Nobody has your time really. They don't even speak Hochdeutsch...that's official German. They speak Bayriesch dialect. No "guten Morgen" here ooo...na "Servus" oder "Grusse dich" so imagine all the Germans you read in the book? See i don't even gave time to be explaining again.

People think you don't want them to come where you are, as if i even know you in person. The thing is, we don't want you to face what poo we are facing. Some guys in other cities are schooling, balling and saving money with less stress, why do you want to do it how e go hard you? One of our guys failed 3 courses this semester. now that means next semester, he's already in a shitty pressure.

Now my school is collaborating with Auslandbehorde (foreigners office where you go to renew your paper), every semester you must complete 75percent of your coursework else, you have issues. That means 5 out of 6 courses every semester(We are doing 6 courses every semester for my course, Business and Engineering).

This does not include the compulsory German course you must prove. For instance, i got 1.3 in my A1 German, and 1.0 in my A2 German exam. Unfortunately, here, it doesn't count in your total CGPA. whereas in other Unis, the language counts in your CGPA and it is part of normal class, so you expected to normally graduate with C1 or C2 (which makes getting job pretty easier for you) which is the highest German....in the whole world grin . Here the German class is held outside normal study time table, but it is a must oooo and you have to pay for it...each level

Finally, i know wetin carry e come Germany, if i had known, i wouldn't come to Schweinfut. Bavarians are just proud, they wanna tell you "yo! this is Germany and we are the real native Germans" so they are strict with everything. Not as if i don't have job, honestly i am the only one yet, other Nigerians here are paying Train ticket to travel 60km or more daily to work. So because i got job and many didn't get, does it mean all is well with Schweinfurt? or because i didn't fail any course and many failed, does it mean i am smart and they are duns or does't mean the exam was easy? Na you sabi.

Inferential statistics doesn't not depend on Mode, but mean distribution as a measure of central tendency and a specific confidence interval (E no go better for Prof Mark grin)

Well,in this jungle, make your mind dey am. Uche gi ga-adi ya fulltime. Now i have food, i am hungry but i don't have time to even cook next minute i am going to work...chai Oluwa Biko oooo.

Soocute experience in DE

##

1) It took me from September to End of February to get a job here in Schweinfurt after aggressive job-hunt with my good level of German. All my seniors i know are not working here. The ones that worked before only did during summer and mostly outside Schweinfurt. Only one, was able to even get the summer job with Scheafler.

Every other guy that came this last winter with me are working in other cities outside Schweinfurt. Infact, just one firm named s.Oliver. them just pack go there dey do strenuous jobs out of "Can't help". Commute every morning at the train station to work with 5.30to 6.00 am train inside cold. This job they can't continue, when school resumes else them go fail prapra.
I work with Bosch. So only me, minus like 20 of us, na good news be that?

2) Schweinfurt as the internet says is one the most Industrialized city in German and 3rd richest. This is because it is like a hub of companies. These companies cannot give you student job bro. Which certificate you get? Wetin you wan do for them? E just be like for naija, you wan work for Shell Petroleum or Big big compaines like that "4 hours per day as permitted by your student status" the job i am doing at Bosch is a sub-letted contract which the company (Bosch) itself no get time for. I am the only black there so i smile all the time against my personal wish as if i am always happy. I dey answer Sir, Ma to person wey no bathe last night, with dirty teeth and untidy shoes. Me wey get swag back home? one just sent me nonsense errand today i nearly cried on my painful safety booth (Mumu me go tell them my normal size without knowing that safety boot need to be oversize)

3) Language spoken in Bayern is mainly Bayrisch. Google it. I don't even want to bug. I never knew the difference until i traveled to other parts of Germany, it was a different ball-game. People were just speaking German i was familiar with (I already studied German by myself in Nigeria before coming here) and i felt good for once that i could understand what they were saying. If i had stayed more than a week, my German would have improved tremendously just by listening to people speaking the correct one. By the way, all Germans certificate exams are not written in Bayrisch which is spoken in Bavaria. It is written in Hoch deustch.

4) 2 professors in my school said it hooohaaa, "Education in this Bayern region is usually more difficult than other parts of Germany" now @heybaby have confirmed the same thing from her end. I will not explain this, but the number of admitted students and the number of retained students in my class has proved it. Germans inclusive.

Everything in life depends on individuals and your future plans. Our guys here normally tell me "Pass na Pass you dey find good grade?" and YES i dey find good grade make i fit do masters. I know people in my class, a cameroonain and Indian, these guys dey correct Prof mistakes sef but couldn't make good grade from former school but had to change school and come here to start afresh. So kolewerk?
You think say i be Olodo abi? I never fail YET no mean say those wey fail na duns.
One thing you should know here is that no fuvking Prof is starting from the scratch for you. Most of the time, the lecture go dey sound Calabar and Kalabari langage for your ears so you gats do self study. Wey the time? smh

5 Health insurance: Na so them tell us "Mawista is this Mawista is that" we just gree we no ask "proper people" question. Now i know the disadvantage of listening to people like you. With mawista, i had to pay my bill first at the hospital, even though they reimbursed me after a while, what if i no get the money to bill to pay upfront? Now Mawista gets increasingly expensive after the first year until it is eventually far more expensive than AOK.

For you to really work very well here, you need to be in a public health insurance. With private, no employer will allow you work long. i am saying facts that has happened to me. I have many "reasonable" German friends too. It's political somehow. Mawista is not a sole German Company. xxxxxxx so use your head if you have one.

If you go to hospital with AOK, they treat you, even thank you, give you food, tell you customer come next time. Because you are not even the one who is paying, AOK will pay and it's a German owned public health insurance. I will not talk too much. Even when your family eventually join you, your AOK insurance will cover all with small money ontop. So because i dey use Mawista, should i encourage all and sundry to use it just because it is cheap at first entry? Who love at first site epp? Them just nack my guy medical bill of 2800 euro last week. Please,be in his shoes and enjoy his reality of Mawista.

6) There is no German module in my course and other school has German modules in it (with embarrassingly 5CP each level in your last semester).

Just imagine say you dey finals and already have C1/C2 level of German? they are simply preparing you to be employed. Here, we pay for each level and its not graded. Asin, e no even dey curriculum sef. The campus language center just organize it. So we are doing about 7 courses every semester in that case. I dey talk still some people no get sense. When i went deep into the other school's curriculum, the mode of most exams na presentation. Some courses they even said "No exam" I called a friend in Saarland and asked how she was going about her Exams, She said "No exams, i just have plenty homework to do" I come dey ask myself, no be his same Germany all of us dey?
The other School have like 4 electives. Here we have 8 electives with 1 general elective and 2 core competencies.
So when you graduate, wetin them go call you? no be engineer

7) One idiot uncle of mine in USA had his friend telling him how he was making 10k euro doing 2 jobs during summer as a student in Germany. I don do all the Maths, permutation and combination, i no see how e take possible.
Even Daimlar (Mercedes) that is paying highest cannot give you that in 5 months fulltime job as a student. Here, you can only do one full-time job (with tax) and one neben job which is 450 euro (without tax) only during holliday. It is not possible to do 2 fulltime jobs in Germany. If you can break the law here and hammer 2 full-time jobs here at once, please take me to your native doctor.

Schools around Norde Rhein Westfahlen give you students card to tour the whole NRW States for free all the time, how is it better than our ticket that cannot even take you to our main Campus in the same Lower Frankonia region? This means, you can't even go to Munich with your student's card here not to talk of the whole Bayern.

When you graduate here in this region, you need to earn a certain net per year to qualify for their paper. Its not that tough in other parts of Germany.

Somebody asked a question on racism

This is the question... My white German friend told me that most Germans don't like going to eastern part of Germany...lack of job opportunities and so on, apart from berlin... and also it has high racism...the towns are cheap, with cheap accommodation, and feeding though. that's what he told me, but hr might be wrong

Yobaby answer to the question

Racism is everywhere but is how you deal with it and most times, you just get does weird stare and sometimes, might not want to seat near you int the train or remove their bags for you to seat. It does not worry me as i love Saxony. For jobs, some students are getting them but they really like you to communicate even with Basic German.

The towns and accommodation are cheap but for me,i am going to see if i can remain in Saxony and especially with the 2years permit they give. If renewing, you do not have to block money again. Since we are under Frieberg.....

I have met some Nigerians that relocated from the big cities to come to the East of Germany to settle and have jobs. But it depends on what an individual wants to achieve here in Germany.

In addition

You can earn 9 to 12euro per hour. Student jobs are available and agents that help to get you inventory, cleaning but if you are good in IT,you get those well. The thing is that, sometimes you would have to travel to work in other cities apart from your own.

Whatever you believe you can achieve in Germany can happen just believe in yourself and God. I have seen favour still work here for some Nigerians. There is a boy here, i call him "the man wey his Chi dey work for am".

My own personal experience as well. Germany is great. Just learn the language.
