FSU: Medical Doctor is just another profession. The aim is to save lives and not wealth. A prudent individual will live on 1300 pounds monthly, if living in a 2 bedroom flat in the UK. The remaining can be used to invest and live the good life. If it's 3800, that a whole 2500 to play with. That's not poor at all. Let's be objective! 2 Likes |

jedisco: Are those people doctors? If so, then salaries in the UK are very low. A new med doc (not talking about interns or residents) in the US earns anywhere from $120K ( approx. 91,100 GBP) per annum and above. That's approx. 7590 GBP per month. |

sgtponzihater1: See my comment immediately above. In any country in the world, Med doctors are among the highest paid. Yes, it is a profession but not just another profession (the way you put it). Poverty is of course a relative term. However, if you make enough to feed and pay rent and other bills and can't save anything for tomorrow, I don't see how that is not poverty. Is it until you beg for food that you consider yourself poor? |

FSU: The thing is that you don't really understand how the UK system operates that's why I keep saying it's Pounds not Naira. Let me explain further. The UK is a welfarist system. The more you earn, the more taxes you pay. It's true that the US, Australia and Canada pays doctors much higher than the UK, but then a specialty trainee in the US does not earn close to $120k gross. Also note that $120k gross is not same as take-home) In the UK, only very senior doctors working in the NHS get upto £90,000 aside tax. And even if you're paid that, the monthly take home is likely less than £5000. That is why I said it's £ not Naira. Now in the UK, health is free, most education is free or highly subsidized. Housing is the major expense. If you cook most of your meals, you can't consume £250 a month on feeding as a single person. The fact is very little percentage of people in the UK earn upto £5000 monthly. People who earn much lower are able to buy a house, go for holidays and live comfortable lives. The UK system is much different from what you think. 5 Likes |
