dustydee: Indeed.... Rude awakening....... Using Azimo/Worldremit services, is always cheaper than this agents....... But sending the other way, is usually the difficult part..... 1 Like |

RalphJean: I'm still weighing my options and may give it a chill for now and see. Using the CC or overdraft is not worth it as those would be over 20%APR That aside, taking a Nigerian bank loan is something else. Apart from the extremely high interest rates, the hidden charges can drive one crazy. Not to talk of what they'd require as collateral. There are very limited times one can break even with such a loan... perhaps when you're doing government supplies. And if I was to explain further, my reason was to make some timed investments with an end plan to keep revolving the gains from that back home and settle home issues from it so I can focus on building my life in the UK and not keep worrying about always sending money home to sort things out. Like I said, I'm not so desperate about it and can let it pass if need be. But then, there's no harm in weighing options. |

fatima04: Well worded. I admire the way u put your point across and thanks for the nice wishes It was a productive conversation until someone brought the laundering aspect into it and started predicting my future. I may not be in the UK for the long haul and apart from a small car perhaps, I'm not thinking of mortgage here at least for the next four years (likely when I can get a home in location I'd want to live in for a long time). I also think faithfully offsetting a short term loan would sure help in boosting ones credit rating and perhaps help mortgaging in the future. Correct me if I'm wrong. All I do with my CC now is groceries which may even have a negative effect on ones rating. It was my JJC status that drove me here to find answers. But then, it seems most people here come from the school of thought that believe in tightening up, and making savings which is fine. On the other hand, I'm not happy saving money for the purpose of saving. It definitely would not make sense expecting a business in Nigeria to pay back by moving naira to £ and that is not what I planned to do. Whatever I want to move back is money I would inadvertently spend over time but would now spend much less if I send it in one chunk and invest. I hope to get a longer term visa soon and would re-evaluate after that. |

DaveChapelle: Different strokes... But what doesn't make sense to me is getting a loan to buy a car. How many years had u been in the UK before applying? |

jedisco:2yrs +... It doesn't make sense... But its a matter of taste, security and value |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by jedisco(m): 11:07am On May 09, 2019 |
DaveChapelle: Yeah. Something must chop a man's money. One more question... About your house, did you use the help to buy/lifetime ISA? - not so sure about the name. But it's a government program than gives 25% bonus on what you save that can only be channelled to buying your first house or retirement savings 1 Like |

Lexusgs430: Lol that's easier to pronounce. Been meaning to ask, does the 5% contribution from the government qualify as public funds. |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by Lexusgs430: 1:51pm On May 09, 2019 |
fatima04: Are you referring to the ' no recourse clause '?.... Government never owns money, whatever money they offer is from taxation/public funds......... |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by LagosismyHome(f): 2:24pm On May 09, 2019 |
DaveChapelle: Surprise you were able to get a mortage after just 2+ in this country especially with a 5% . I thought most banks only do mortage after ILR? That was a very good one then 1 Like |

Got mortgage on Tier 4. I guess they are just checking how 'high risk' the customer will be. LagosismyHome: |

Bourne007: I had to go check what called Tier 4 visa, its had to keep up ......lol. Wow mortage with a student visa , that was brillant . I wonder what the value of the property was . I would have though mortagage with a Student visa would be a big NO. My Russian friend is trying to get a 450k mortage and banks have said no, she has to wait for her husband ILR You learn something new everyday |

Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by DaveChapelle: 11:59pm On May 09, 2019 |
LagosismyHome:the misconception is that you must have ILR before getting a mortgage. The fact people were declined doesn't affirm the misnoma. People just need to be informed. The truth is people aren't denied. If you have a visa... Most lenders demand more deposit due to risk, so technically, it's not that they are not giving them... Why will you borrow someone on 1yr visa 300k over 30yrs! What if he goes back to his country... I use to have that misconception too, till I got the right information 3 Likes |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by fatima04: 9:47am On May 10, 2019 |
Lexusgs430: Yes exactly that. Being on any Visa aside ILR is really limiting and unfair. An example is the Childcare voucher from ones employer, this was stopped last year october and replaced by Tax free child care I suppose. Thought of applying for the Tax free childcare and as at November last year there was no clause for "no recourse to public funds". I was just still researching on the whole thing and decided to pend the application until after our visa renewal, only for me to go back to the website and see it in bold now that as long as your Visa states "no recourse...." you cant have access to it. So basically we pay so much tax and still pay for healthcare and then we cant even get subsidy on childcare. And village people wants more kids 2 Likes |
