Ruling On Using Toothpaste Whilst Fasting by Lukgaf(m): 8:02pm On May 09, 2019
Praise be to Allaah.

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked about using toothpaste whilst fasting. He said: there is nothing wrong with that so long as one is careful to avoid swallowing any of it, just as it is prescribed in Islam for the fasting person to use the siwaak (tooth-stick)

Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 4/247

Shaykh Muhammad al-Saalih ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:

… This leads us to the question: Is it permissible to use a toothbrush and toothpaste whilst fasting or not?

The answer is that it is permitted, but it is preferable not to use them because the toothpaste is too strong and may go down into the throat. Instead of doing that during the day, one should do it at night.

Fasting is more about your health than righteousness. Whether you swallow toothpaste or not is quite insignificant. You guys need to understand the religion and focus on what matters.

Using toothbrush and paste is also the same as using chewing stick. And we all know that using chewing stick is permissible any time of the day in Ramadan...

No, it doesn't. If the user doesn't intend to swallow it then it's good. Who would want to risk his/her health by taking in toothpaste anyway? Jazakumullah khayran to the OP.

So you Muslims will be going up and down with smelly mouth cuz you don't want to swallow toothpaste?
You won't brush cuz you're fasting?

This religion is something else.

See confused people.. Toothpaste or no toothpaste shouldn't bring up any argument. At least you guys eat in the morning 4am-5:30am (Sahur)before fajr prayer. Some of them will eat as if that is going to be their last breakfast. Don't you guys brush your teeth before you eat Sahur ? So why argue as if you don't eat early morning food before you start fasting or you guys don't swallow the early morning food?.

Haba stop displaying your confusion to the world na.

Scientifically, Chewing stick, no matter how dried will reactivate the chemical component of the stick when mixed with saliva. These chemical component will surely go down your throat willingly or not. Same with toothpaste. Please let us be Clean, God hates dirty attitudes, both spiritually and physically. Brush your teeth as many times as you can...as much as you can feel comfortable speaking to people and the comfort is mutual.

Tell me, how will you perform ablution without water not going down your throat, and we do these at least twice during the day of Ramadan.
So OP, that's my opinion. ALLAH KNOWS BEST

For those antagonist trying to mock or paint Islam bad, I hope you see your reward soon. We educate eachother here. Please, if you wish to learn, you're free to ask questions, but if you're here to mock, no one will reply or insult you. Gone are those days people fight online because of religion, with the situation in Nigeria, I think we have a lot to concentrate on than engaging lonely attention seekers.

most people brush before sahur or right before adhan... And if you did not brush before eating you can still brush anytime of the day, it is not that someone eats or drink toothpaste

. The Prophet said, "Allah said: The Fast is for Me and I will give the reward for it, as he (the one who observes the fast) leaves his sexual desire, food and drink for My Sake. Fasting is a screen (from Hell) and there are two pleasures (moments of happiness or joys) for a fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord. And the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is better in Allah's Sight than the smell of musk." [Bukhari]

The most important is water and paste should not be exerggerated to the throat. But then, it is always better to avoid or simply brush lightly with water. I can understand if a fasting person works in the office or in a highly sophisticated environment may want to brush teeth due to daily interactions with others. It is always best to avoid especially with toothpaste.

Especially toothpaste like Neem or Miswak. They taste nice and easily swallowed. Thanks for the post.

As for you, even with clear verse which places emphasis on righteousness you still got it wrong?. Yes, it's rejuvenates health issues as well as other reasons. But it is best to have niyah around righteousness than anything else.

Righteousness is what Qur'an speaks of.

"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous -"

It doesn't say "that you may have good health". Everything falls under righteousness
